I would've considered Alfie a pretty "core" guy.

Where did you get that figure? How does it break down? Does this include concessions? Does it include parking?

Senators Sports and Entertainment VP and CFO Erin Crowe, was profiled in the Queen's School of Business Magazine, saying:

"It's a $120-million business. ... We're not making widgets or software, we're putting on hockey games and concerts, but you still need that infrastructure behind an operation to support the generation of $120-million in revenue each year."

This was in January 2012

not a guy in his prime and integral to the team

they are already paying Spezza and Ryan and Karlsson big money, when he is in dire straits. They will continue to. If they are still "on a budget" in 3 years, it will be the younger guys coming off ELC's who will be moved

So remember how we made the Ryan trade and brought in a guy making $5.5M?   And Alfie signed elsewhere for $5.5M.

And then today Melnyk says we can't afford to bring in another player making $5 to $6M.

So if we didn't have an owner currently in financial ruin, we'd have Bobby Ryan and Alfie.  That's all I'm getting at.  Main Stream Media was all over Melnyk today...he said we suffered substantial losses this year.  A couple years ago, he said we don't have to make the playoffs anymore to make money.

So he's a liar, in financial ruin, and also generally nuts.  Weird that Alfie left.

WE WOULD HAVE HAD ALFIE AND RYAN IF ALFIE DIDN"T BAIL ON HIS TEAM.

you gonna keep beating this dead horse or what? If this is the state of this site, I'll be back in October.

Lots of those forwards are on two-way deals. Sucks for them but if you can make the team better...

Not sure who to boot off though. Not Pageau for sure.

It's a big reason why ticket prices are so low, few people will pay more to go through that.

Most arenas are downtown where you have subways and other means of getting there and back.  Plus you have more people buying booze because they don't have to drive home.

But that's not really possible in this city.

it's called the bus.

Ever live in a city with a subway and suburban trains? There is no comparison to busses.

Ah, that makes more sense -- the $120M includes putting on concerts and other events. Because if HRR was $120M and they're paying $60M in salaries, they are making a bit of coin.

The Sens may lose money if they payout $55M in salary and don't make the 2nd round, but the arena is used for concerts and events, too.

The floor will be at $55M in a few years if NHL revenues grow as projected, I wonder what will happen then.

The Sens' revenues will grow as well. More revenue sharing is clearly necessary.

What you say directly contradicts what the owner of the Ottawa Senators said yesterday. He said we couldn't afford another $5M-$6M player. This is why we can't have both Alfie and Ryan. You can put your head in the sand and deny that fact all you want, but it doesn't mean it's not true.

Just to throw some numbers out based on capacity and avg ticket cost (doesn't include free tickets) sens probably take in 1M per game in ticket sales. 41 games a year that's only 41M. Gotta consider te expensive a to fly charter planes and five star hotels... The expenses must be massive.

I wonder if a big problem is EM had a bunch of staff being paid while no income was being generated. Plus his divorce of course. It's completely understandable that he wants to keep to a budget. It's just unfortunate that its at a time when so many good players are available and some teams are really tight to the cap.

If their figures are accurate (and there's no reason to believe they are not):

Gate receipts: $50M

Guess what, tickets are going up. And their revenue is $113, not $120. And it will surely dip significantly this fiscal year. Fascinating numbers.

They should raise ticket prices a little. Not hammer the customer but at least be on the level of the average ticket price around the NHL in terms of markets who actually support a team. If the fans don't want to pay a little more (like a 15% bump in prices) then Ottawa shouldn't have a team, plain and simple. Something has to give here.

An increase of 5$ per ticket should equal another 4M. These are estimates. As was my 120m of revenue
