I think we all have to keep in mind that Alfie isn't going to play for $1M this season. Figure he'll almost make equivalent to what Gonchar made last season. You then have to turn around and qualify Condra, Hoffman (one-way?), and Wiercioch which will likely add another $3M+ against the cap (at least). Michalek, Phillips and Greening are UFA's the year after, and Conacher, Silfverberg, Lehner, Cowen RFA's as well.

This is the budget that Murray keeps referring to. He can spend money, but he has to keep in mind that the core of his roster will be getting significant raises in the next year or two and it's more important to his system to have three guys making $3M than one guy making $9M. It's the small market mentality...

IMO Murray has to address two top-six positions, and a top-four D position without hurting the core or taking on too much salary in the process.

I like Kassian... when he's 25, 26 he is going to be an absolute beast of an NHLer IMO if he can get a grip on the ice which does come with maturity. That said, I don't think it's equal value or a trade Ottawa would have to make... it's BS anyways.
