Us fans have no right to complain about the team's budget. Especially given the age of the roster.

I am not complaining about the budget, just concerned about the ability to spend more down the road.

The floor will be going up and it will cost more just to keep what we have.

Exactly...

Melnyk probably lost a bundle in his divorce.. that put him in a bad way financially?

There was an unsubstantiated rumour on another site (probably not true) that the league had to step in and pay some of the players salaries at the end of the season -- they kept that hush-hush.

They need a new Zamboni, apparently, and don't have the $$ to do that..

All of this really has me concerned that this team could be sold and it is gone out of town..

Melnyk has no problems jetting back and forth from Barbados at the drop of a hat and he apparently has money to build a casino too...

Like any rich person, he'd rather have other people pay his expenses (scoreboard) so he's probably waiting for the "corporate community" to buy that Zamboni...

LOL, they just bought a 5 million dollar scoreboard but can't buy a Zamboni? Hell, do you know how many used Zamboni's there are around Canada. Sandy, get off the crack.

He might be a good choice.  RHS D, $4M cap hit, but $3M salary.

there's a reason he;s on the marke

He has partners for that casino (but it looks like it was shot down anyway).  It's not just him.

What's this about a zamboni ?

I thought he was a decent player.

He's on the market largely because of cap reasons and the Wild can't buy Heatley out.

The casino would make him a lot of money. I think he got ripped and dicked by the city of ottawa on that one. Too bad for him, he could of used a giant size ATM right next to Canadian Tire center.

I expect he'd underwhelm in Ottawa.

He had a pretty good year. I'm not going to pretend I'm the biggest Gilbert fan in the world but he's a decent NHLer.

It's not the first time that Melnyk's finances have come up. That divorce probably cost him a huge amount of $$$.

Melnyk realizes the team will more than make up for the amount of $ spent on salary if they go far in the playoffs

They LEASED the scoreboard. And believe me, I'm not on crack...

The Zamboni issues are rumours from those who supposedly work at CT Centre.

The only way new players come in is via a trade. I don't think the Sens will get into the bidding on UFA's.

BTW -- Chicago is shopping Bolland. He has 1 yr left before he is a UFA.

So tell us why we were ready to take Rick Nash's multi million $ contract?
I think you listen to too many rumours when the obvious is there to analyze.
Bryan Murray said a few weeks ago that NOT ONCE in 6 years Melnyk has refused to take on salary when Murray suggested to add good free agents or get some good players back in a trade. Just because it may not have happened yet does not mean Melnyk veto-ed a trade or a signing.
The fact: Bryan Murray will not add salary for the sake of adding it if it does not suit the Sens long term. He'd rather play the rookies and give them experience. The times of the free agents borderline top 6 players is over.
Melnyk is fine, trust me Nod

Capitaltickets is a pretty decent ATM.

Agreed. We're a 'small market team' based on the fact that we're rebuilding and not trying to add unnecessary salary. Melnyk was ready to open his wallet for Rick Nash.

They will never be in the same league as Toronto, Philly, Mtl, etc and conversely will never be in the same league as Tampa, Florida, or Dallas. Really, being fiscally responsible and operating similarly to a small market team is equivalent to saying "we wont spend money unless we have reason to believe it's money well spent".

There were $$$ going out in that trade as well.. Not dollar for dollar mind you. And Howson did say the other day that the Sens had the best offer for Nash... but I think if it had worked.. Lehner would be a Blue Jacket. So I'm as happy as hell that didn't happen.

There have been plenty of calls about Ottawa’s young talent, and Murray is not opposed to putting a package together for a proven scorer.

“The problem is, the names being mentioned (from other teams) are high-salaried guys that don’t fit,” Murray said. “I’m trying to live within the budget. The guys they’re willing to part with are $5-million, $6-million players.”

http://www.senatorsextra.com/main/senators-head-to-draft-looking-to-steal-a-deal

It doesn't sound like we are getting anyone making $5M+

I wonder who the players are that BM is referring to (Cammalleri is probably one of them).
