I can see the Sens maybe flipping their pick to Philly with Wiercioch going the other way to move up to get a guy like Domi... maybe NJ as both those teams needs some younger players on the back end but other than that...

This would surprise me. With Gonchar gone, they'll need a good puck mover out there. Any idea how close Ceci is at this point?

I'm actually of the opinion that Ceci could be a lot closer than most people think. He would still need a bit of time in Bingo to learn from Richardson, and when he comes up to Ottawa he will be sheltered, for sure, but he's physically mature enough now.

He's not replacing Gonchar's minutes; that would be Karlsson. Gryba will play 2nd pairing just like he did for most of last season.

Methot-Karlsson
Cowen-Gryba
Phillips-Ceci

That could well be the lineup in the near future but I don't think it's the lineup to start the season. Realistically speaking Ceci is probably not getting more than a sniff this coming season, though.

In any case, if by some miracle Ceci can come up after a couple of months under Richardson, we still need someone to play the right side until then. Our third pairing could be Wiercioch-Phillips. But if Wiercioch is not in their long-term plans and will be used in a trade for a winger, then that will happen before the start of the season, so we still need someone. There's Borowiecki, Benoit could still be re-signed, Wideman, Blood, etc.

I agree. I think Ceci will be in the lineup this year. Perhaps not at the start of the season, but certainly at some point.

I'm a firm believer that Cowen is used as bait to acquire the top winger. While I believe the Sens missed Cowen this past year, they survived without him. Add in a very poor playoff performance, a weak showing in the WJHC the last two tourneys he was involved, and his past health issues - I think this would be the time to trade Cowen. He hasn't bloomed offensively as originally hoped and I don't think he's monumentally better than Gryba defensively. Yes, he's a big body and a physical force, but I say trade him while his value is high.

I like the thought of Cowen and Puempel to Edmonton for Eberle. I think that solves a lot of issues for both teams - especially with Edmonton likely taking Monahan with the #7 if this indeed comes to fruition. It might take more from both sides to get that trade done - but Eberle would be the perfect fit in Ottawa as would Cowen in Edmonton.

I realize this trade proposal leaves a big hole in our defence but the acquisition of someone like Bogosian or even perhaps Z.Michalek fills that hole quite nicely. You also have to assume that any d-man in Vancouver is up for grabs for a low-cost roster player.

I'd like Ottawa to really consider acquiring the following players to address theit top six:
- Nick Bjugstad
- Patrik Berglund
- Josh Bailey
- Blake Wheeler
- Loui Eriksson
- Jamie Benn

Maybe they move a guy like Da Costa... not sure, just saying that it will cost something decent to move up in this draft like all others.

Campbell sucks defensively though.  I'm no longer a fan of that guy, even if it would make our PP better.  No doubt we need an offensive minded D-man though, but Murray was so quick to jettison Gonchar, he either really believes in Wiercioch - which goes against what Mac did in the playoffs - or he has a plan.

Or maybe Murray knew his demands and was unwilling to agree to the term or $$$. Shrug

Apparently the Sens offered a 1 yr deal.. Gonchar wanted 2 yrs and wouldn't take a paycut...

Don't agree with trading Cowen...  He's basically played 1 full NHL season..

We all saw in his 1st game back from injury with the great hit and 2 fights of how good he can be on the backend.  And his manhandling of White in game 3 of round 1..

I really like the kid and want him to at least be giving a chance to excel in Ottawa.

Karlsson was not very good in his first year either... but we all know how he turned out.  Now I'm not comparing Cowen to Karlsson... it doesn't come close.. but give him a chance before throwing him away.  It's much harder to obtain and develop good young defensemen than it is forwards...

BTW == Edmonton will not be trading Eberle.

I think Ceci needs a full season in the AHL.  His defense still needs work..

How bad is he defensively? I'm not talking about throwing him in playing 15-20 minutes a game. I'm talking about seeing what Richardson can do with him for a couple of months, then giving him 7-10 easy minutes plus perhaps some PP time. Start him in a few home games so you can match lines/pairings.

Let's not forget about Gryba. He shot up the depth chart because he played the right side and Karlsson went down -- he didn't have a single RHS D-man, and only Gonchar who was used to playing on that side.

Now we have Karlsson and Gryba. Wideman and Ceci are the only RH D in Bingo. Either we go out and get someone or one of those two has got to come in as at least a 7th. And if that happens, you never know.

Saw on twitter that Eklund gave an E5 to Briere being bought out. I think he's pretty good with Flyers stuff plus E5 is pretty reliable IIRC
Anyway, how much would we offer him is the question. I don't really care as long as Melnyk agrees.

That's the issue for sure. What was to be 2.5 X 2 turns into 4 X 3 - so 5 million becomes 12. Not sure Murray or Melnyk will go for that, but we'll see how this plays out.

For that matter, do we even know if Briere's gonna be bought out? For all we know they've come to an agreement on a trade and are waiting for the Finals to be over. Although, Briere has every right to refuse to waive and wait to be bought out. WAY more money.

2 years, 8 million is my guess. Or 3 years, 11.5/12.

I think Briere will just refuse to waive and then be bought out. More guaranteed income that way. By getting Streit, the Flyers HAVE to do something, so Briere knows that means a buyout if he isn't traded.

As for $$$ and term, I'd be happier with a 2 year deal than a 3 year deal, but it may end up at 3 just because he could get that somewhere else. We'll be bidding on a free agent, so that complicates matters slightly.

It complicates it a lot unfortunately. I doubt Murray is too worried though, either he signs here or we continue looking - or we do nothing at forward and focus in on a 2nd pairing D-man.

We want Boyle! We want Boyle!

If I do that enough, will it come true?

Boyle is going nowhere this off-season, so stop wasting your breath.

Depends on a lot of things. First: how much is Couture making as of 14/15? 6? 5.5? It's gonna be a big raise on what's already a team up against the cap.

http://www.capgeek.com/sharks/

55 mil for 15 players, so 9 mil for 5 or 6 players. It's not out of the realm I guess, but it'll start getting tight soon - and really, now's the time to get a 1st + for Boyle.

The Sharks are still playoff contenders. Boyle only has one year left. He was one of their best players in the playoffs. If you remove Boyle from their D, it starts getting pretty thin.

They will keep him, unless they are out of the picture come trade deadline day.

The Sharks have one year left with the current core.

Wouldn't be so sure Boyle isn't moving... they have a year left on his deal and then they need to resign Thornton, Couture(already did) and Marleau going into 14/15.  Maybe they keep him on and they make that push for the Cup again but if they move him picks and prospects I wouldn't be too surprised.

That said, I think they buyout Havlat.
