NO way they should trade Cowen. A kid who basically has played 1 NHL season.

He would have been a top 5 draft pick if not for the knee injury.

You can't teach big & mean.. Sure he had a rough stint after coming back from the hip injury.. but he will be fully healed by Sept..

I don't think Murray is that stupid to trade Cowen...

Karlsson, Methot & Cowen will be the cornerstones of the Sens D in the future..

Weircioch.. maybe dealt.. but he is probably the best PMD after Karlsson the Sens have right now..

Sens do need an experienced D to play with Cowen this season... Will be interesting who they bring in..

As for getting Vanek.... only if a sign & trade. As for Ryan.. Anaheim would be better off now.. trading him to Philly for Couturier ++ now.. as they will only have Ryan for 2 more seasons...

1. Who cares. Methot would have been a 1st rounder if teams knew he would have been this good. Draft position is 100% the most irrelevant argument you could ever make for any player in any sport. It does not matter. Never use it again.

2. Murray isn't stupid enough to deal Cowen? If tomorrow the Pens came knocking and were offering up Malkin but a deal would have to include Cowen, Murray isn't dumb enough not to trade Cowen.

Guys like Cowen would only get traded if there is someone else in the organization who can bring what he brings otherwise we're filling a hole at the expense of creating one elsewhere.

I wouldn't trade Cowen, closest thing to Chara that we've had since he left.

I don't agree with draft position doesn't matter. It certainly does for some... like Toews, Crosby, Malkin, etc. But then you can also look to Datsyuk, Zetterberg & Alfie. What I was referring to is that Cowen should have been drafted higher than he was for his skill set.

We yet don't know his ceiling as he has basically played 1 NHL season. And yes, he may not match up to expectations.. but I think he will. We have seen snippets of what he can do... and I liked what I saw.

And agreed with Hoags... the Sens have nobody right now to take his place. The Sens need physical D on the backend... and they have that with Methot & Cowen. Methot, we didn't know how he would do in the lineup when he came in last season. A lot of fans in Columbus (yeah, what do they know) said he was more or less a bottom pair D. But he played great this season.. if it wasn't for him, the Sens would have been in big trouble and would now be salivating over who to pick -- Jones, MacKinnon or Drouin.

The situation you mentioned about trading Cowen to get Malkin is unrealistic. It's more what has been mentioned on here in regards to trading Cowen to move up... or to get a rental in Ryan...

Malkin is a very bad analogy. He's got one year left and may be bolting for the KHL. $15M tax-free is hard to turn down.

But he is not going to play ahead of Methot and Cowen, and unless Phillips is playing the right side that leaves him battling for the rd pairing duties with #4. It's doable, for sure, but I still would prefer having another RHS back there, which likely means trade/FA. And then you have Wiercioch as a 6/7 competing with Phillips and call-ups (assuming Benoit signs elsewhere). He needs a regular (even if a third-pairing) shift plus time on the PP. If he is not going to get it here then they may as well move him for a forward. It's not going to be a one-for-one swap, but he's going to be more than just a throw-in. He is a legit NHL defenseman with good up-side.

Such a soft player though. Gets destroyed on the forecheck if he doesn't have the room to make a pass.

2 years is not a long time. Don't like that scenario - at all.

Too risky apparently to trade for someone with 2 years left on his contract.
I will never understand why people are so afraid to lose players to free agency.

It's not as much that as it is the assets we'd have to give up to get him in the first place. What a waste.

I think if we got Ryan this off-season, we'd have two years to convince him to re-sign here, which he likely would given the direction of the team.

Agreed... the Sens will have to give up top prospects for a player who has said in the past he favours playing in Philly. So let Philly deal with Anaheim... at least they will get to keep him.

I just can't see any situation, if Ottawa gets Ryan, that he stays after he is a UFA. #1 he wants to play in Philly, and more importantly Melnyk may not pay the big bucks to keep him.

He is talented and would look very good next to Spezza... but the thought of giving up so much for what could be such a short stay in Ottawa... scares the hell out of me. If the Sens were forced to trade him rather than let him walk as a UFA.. they will never get what they paid for him.

if the sens got Ryan and we were perennial contenders and Ryan saw that Philly still sucks the big one, why would he want to go to Philly?

The by-yearly promise that 'the team's headed in the right direction' and you could come in and be a big part of it! OMG! Ahhhhh!

I'm finally ready to concede that I think it's the Oilers that we're gonna deal with.

1.Murray loves dealing with new GMs

2.They have an abundance of forwards and a below average D.

3.They might view Yakupov for Cowen as very favourable for where they want to get to. We might think the same about Yakupov - although, I'd obviously rather get Eberle or Hall, I doubt that's an option.

4.It's none of the young guys and we get Hemsky for relatively cheap, although I could see it being more than we think it would be

During the 2 years that he's here he will see for himself that the team's headed in the right direction smart Donkey.
