My expectations aren't low, I just don't include offensive production in what I expect from him (like it matters what I expect, lol). I would take the Zack Smith I have this year over any previous version of Zack Smith. He is playing very well defensively, and not taking dumb penalties. Prime example was when he squared up with Kadri on Saturday night. The old Zack Smith would've popped him one and taken a dumb penalty. New and improved Smith just made him look like a fool.

Smith is a perfect 4th line centre. He is capable of playing the 3rd line role too, but in more of a defensive capacity than offensive.

To start the year last season he was fantastic but probably a more of a fluke than the norm. Smith will probably be a consistent 10 goal, 30 point guy that plays a lot of tough minutes and makes life hell for the other team. That's why he was drafted, that's how he was developed, and that's how he is being played.

Just "keeping you honest", NEELY, lol. You said once he gets one, he'll get a bunch, but his last 3 were all monthly events. I don't have a problem with Smith now (but earlier, and late last season he stopped skating and stopped hitting and that, without the goals, was not acceptable even for a 3rd liner).

Would not be surprised to see Perry traded at the deadline. He's not quite the integral piece of the pie he once was there.

I honestly wonder what kind of shot Ottawa has at resigning Perry. I have no doubt in my mind they could swing a deal for Perry but will he resign? Huge question.

I think he will test the market. Why wouldn't he ? just to see what kind of teams and offers are out there, he has nothing to lose.

He is a piece Ottawa desperately needs but teams like Montreal, Pitt, Boston, Detroit, could also all offer him the same kind of thing. IMO Detroit is a huge player in this case.

Any team he gets traded to has the capability to sign him for one more year than any other team (part of the new CBA). That would be an extra $8M or so. So, yeah, anyone "resigning" him automatically gets the upper hand.

Boston would need to make cap space, they are pretty much maxed out.
Same with Detroit, plus I don't think they're a top destination anymore, they lose out on Parise/Suter.
Pittsburgh might be low on cap space too
Not sure why he would want to go to a media circus like Montreal

As for the extra $8M, it really depends on whether money is his top priority or not.

Wonder if giving up this years and next years 1st is enough to get it done with Michalek and Weircioch.
