I agree with not trading the first rounder if the Sens are not a playoff team or are just hovering around there but that said, if it looks like they are firmly in at some point before the deadline getting Boyle would pretty much guarantee the 1st rounder only gets worse.

Thought I should state that again.

Or maybe it's 2008 and we lose out Karlsson? Works both ways.
This draft looks closer to 2008 than 2011
(not that I believe we'll ever find another Karlsson)

Anyway, we're not dealing a 1st with Spezza and Karlsson out, let's stop kidding ourselves here.
The only reason this is brought up is because we are on a 4 game winning streak. 7 days ago you guys were talking about how we wouldn't win a single game the rest of the season Laugh1

Ha. Good point. This site was full of Chicken Littles a few days ago.

I for one thought we would struggle to win 4 games in a month much less in a row. I am extremely glab that I was so wrong. This group has the same characterics as the 2011 Bingo team and the Pat Quinn leaves, they are like cockroaches in that they won't die or quit. Although the quality of hockey is not great, I find myself enjoying watching the effort and belief that the guys have.

Reminds me more of the post trade deadline team in Clouston's last year but with better coaching and goaltending.

Boyle's on the wrong side of 35, I wouldn't give up a first and Wiercioch for an old man. That should get us (or be awfully close ) O'Reilly.

San Jose would have to fall way out of a playoff spot for that to happen so I think it'd be in the offseason if ever (when Gonchar is gone).

Cheapskate Melnyk would never pay Gonchar AND Boyle.

I don't think that beats the B's. Chara and his 20ft stick alone are hard to top and they have 6 solid defenders plus Rask.

Luongo had passed Anderson to take the lead in GAA (1.45 vs. 1.49). Guess how many goals Detroit have gotten past Lou today? *Five* And there's still the third period to come (although I wouldn't be surprised if he spends the rest of the game sitting on a stool).

So because Boyle is older than 35 he's no longer a great player nor worth a 1st round pick? So much faulty logic there I wouldn't know where to begin.

Chris Philips is 34 and he's nowhere near as good as he used to be. You make it sound like most players don't decline in their mid 30's.

Plus you said 1st rd pick + Wiercioch which I think is too much. This team (as great as it is) hasn't won a single playoff round yet. I don't think we should be dealing draft picks + prospects for anything other than young future assets at this point.

Count me in as someone who wouldn't move a first for Boyle.

I'll give you a former first round pick in Puempel + a 3rd, but like it or not, he's 36 and owed 7 million + the rest of this season.

Puempel seems to be doing pretty well, I wouldn't mind seeing more of him before we deal him.

You'd have to resign Boyle for that kind of trade to be worth it (unless we win the SC next year) and how will he be at age 37,38,39 ?

If San Jose is willing to let him go for cheap(er) because they desperately need cap space for next year, I'm all for it. I've always been a fan of Boyle.

Boyle is the Alfi type player that can get around by out thinking the other guy, he's going to be in the NHL for 3, 4 years more for sure and no one will question that. Also, Phillips has been as solid as ever so not too sure what you are talking about, he hasn't lost a step or looked like anything other than the Chris Phillips from the past decade.

Boyle is the right fit because he's a guy that can slide into a #1 spot if need be and the team wouldn't miss too much of a beat if Karlsson does happen to go down.

They still need to get to the cap floor next year, fyi.

I'm not questioning the acquisition of Boyle just the price. Murray and Dorion do great things with (late) first rounders.

As for us getting to the cap floor, two words: Corey Perry.

You get Boyle and Weircioch has no place to play, that's the point.

We'll see if Perry actually resigns or not because he won't be moved mid season now.

Wiercioch wouldn't have a place to play now if Cowen was healthy. I totally agree we need a skilled RHD behind EK but that person probably won't get much PP time as EK pretty much runs both our PP units. Boyle wouldn't get much PP time behind EK methinks.

As for Perry, if he wanted to resign he'd have done so by now I think. Still possible but I get the feeling he'll test the market. Ducks owner is cheap, I doubt he can afford both Getzlaf and Perry without lowballing both of them.

Whatever they offered him clearly isn't enough.

I think Alfie will come back for one more season and the Gene will give him a "get well" contract, remember he is playing for 1M pro-rated due to the lockout. Besides they are only 3M under the cap next year with the current contracts.

That's true we have $39M on the books for next year and the floor will be $44M. Sign Alfie and our RFAs and we are done.

I guess it was for some charity single ladies thing when he was at Cornell. Hilarious. Methot got his hands on that YouTube link today and will be sharing it with the dressing room.

I'm sure the 'guys' will get a laugh out of that one. Toooo funny. One way to loosen them up for the game tomorrow.

I wouldn't deal with SJ again. The GM wants the moon for any trade... Even though Michalek has been good for the Sens... including Cheecho in that was bad for the Sens...

BTW -- the Sens don't have a 2nd rounder this draft either. So getting rid of the 1st rounder means they don't pick until round 3 in a real good draft. I don't think Murray does that. And he has said he is not trading his first round prospects.

I believe they will trade Bishop... but will it be for a young player or a pick... nothing is guaranteed there.
