I'm also not sure if the Euge wants to take on a $6.6M cap hit for next year for a 37 yr old defenceman either. Boyle would also need to waive his NTC to come here.

That said, the Murrays do like to get guys from the area. And Boyle's pretty awesome, even at his age. I doubt we sacrifice a 1st rounder though...the Murrays seem big on the draft, and I think they'll realize that adding Boyle likely doesn't bring us a cup this year.

No you never trade a 1st round pick for anyone over 35 unless it's a generationnal talent. Nevermind the fact he's making more than Karlsson or that we are not even close to being a cup contender.
Plus this draft is very good.

That's nonsense about "never" trading a 1st rounder for someone over 35. Let's say Ottawa is top 4 in the East and looking to make a huge playoff run...then, yeah, you trade a 1st rounder for someone like Boyle. It'll be a late 1st rounder, and that type of player could easily put you over the top.

But if we're a borderline playoff team, then I agree, we don't trade a 1st rounder unless it's for someone that can be here long-term.

If it were to happen, it would be in the offseason when Gonchar is gone and replaced by Boyle. Boyle is from Ottawa, i find it really hard to believe he'd decline if asked to come to Ottawa. His NTC is also limited now so all he can do is submit a list of 8 teams he will not go to, I doubt we'd be on it.

I don't watch the Sharks so I don't know if Boyle still has it in him or if he's over the hill already.

Boyle may be from Ottawa, but I don't know what his family situation is. If he has a wife and kids down in San Jose, he may not want to move everybody up north.

Over the top or not I'll never trade a 1st rounder for someone who's gonna play 1-2 years.
I'd rather build a perennial cup contender through drafting that get a shot of 1-2 years at the cup. Very rarely have I seen one player get any team "over" the top

Getting Boyle would pretty much ensure solid minutes for the next 3 to 4 years, Alfi's best years were from about 34-38 and Boyle is that same type of player to go along with the fact he doesn't have a ton of hard miles on him.

Getting a guy who could step in for Karlsson and hardly miss a beat would be great. Could also give Ottawa the best defense in the Eastern Conference.

I agree with not trading the first rounder if the Sens are not a playoff team or are just hovering around there but that said, if it looks like they are firmly in at some point before the deadline getting Boyle would pretty much guarantee the 1st rounder only gets worse.

On top of all that, Bishop will be dealt at the draft and you can pretty much bet you have a couple 2nd rounders coming back if he keeps playing like he has so it's not like they won't be stock piling the prospects anyways.

If they want to make a run for the cup next year or the year after, a player like Boyle to create depth and a very balanced and solid 3 pairings is key. Maybe more so than that big time winger.

i had the same thoughts while watching the Sharks yesterday. I would have no problem dealing a 1st if it's 15 and up. Let's pretend it's 2011, you're losing out on a Noesen or Puempel in the long-run? No biggie at all.

Exactly. Imagine a defense group of

Methot/Karlsson
Phillips/Boyle
Cowen/Gryba
Benoit...

Would think the trade would be a 1st and Weircioch.

That's the best in the East and maybe the NHL without question. Not to mention the fact Anderson and Lehner will be back stopping them.

As for the Noesen/Peumpel thing... remember, Murray traded 2, 2nd rounders for that 24th pick and Murray will have 2 from a Bishop trade come the draft as well.

Boyle, if the Sens turn the corner from good team to contender would be close to putting them over the top. Also has a cup ring t flash around the room. Not like he wouldn't resign in Ottawa either, you would get 3 - 4 seasons out of him minimum.

I've been thinking about this scenario for the last week when the rumours came out that Boyle might be available.

Puempel + Gonchar OR 2014 2nd would be my offer and I can imagine that it might work. Maybe not, but we HAVE to try. Right handed shot, offensive D-man who can play in his own zone, Ottawa boy, making a lot of $$, but we don't even have to worry about this summer's crop of UFAs.

Bang, done, then focus on Perry.

Whoa, whoa...people are talking about trading our 1st this year for Boyle? I wouldn't personally, I'd make it happen somehow, but would insist on a 2014 1st if we must.

I guess it was for some charity single ladies thing when he was at Cornell. Hilarious. Methot got his hands on that YouTube link today and will be sharing it with the dressing room.

Why wouldn't you talk about trading a 1st for a top 2, RH d man who has in the past waived his NTC incase he was traded to Ottawa? You trade a pick anywhere from 15th to 26th for 3, 4 years of Dan Boyle? On top of that, Ottawa is moving Bishop for something come the draft so they will be getting picks at some point for the 2013 draft.

Maybe a 2014 draft pick is the way to go as well but I would give up a lot to get a guy who is one of the best D men in the last decade.

Or maybe it's 2008 and we lose out Karlsson? Works both ways.
This draft looks closer to 2008 than 2011
(not that I believe we'll ever find another Karlsson)

Anyway, we're not dealing a 1st with Spezza and Karlsson out, let's stop kidding ourselves here.
The only reason this is brought up is because we are on a 4 game winning streak. 7 days ago you guys were talking about how we wouldn't win a single game the rest of the season Laugh1

I for one thought we would struggle to win 4 games in a month much less in a row. I am extremely glab that I was so wrong. This group has the same characterics as the 2011 Bingo team and the Pat Quinn leaves, they are like cockroaches in that they won't die or quit. Although the quality of hockey is not great, I find myself enjoying watching the effort and belief that the guys have.
