i appreciate Melnyk sticking up for everyone, but wow he sounds really stupid with some of the things he said to Brent Wallace. Matt Cooke is worth a dime? Stop acting like he's George Parros. Then he's talking about how hard it is to cut through fat and skin and other stuff protecting the tendon? not really, Eug, it's pretty easy to get cut with skates.

also what the Diddle does he mean by this "3-year plan" that he always mentions? Like what does that even mean? Next year is Year 3, then what?

I hate agreeing with a penguins fan....but agreed. Melnyk has a right to say what he wants but it was stupid some of the things he said. I do agree Cooke should have been out of this league a long time ago.

I wish he directed more vitriol towards the p.o.s refs.

What exactly did Melnyk say? I don't have audio at work, but I think that's Cussing great that he spoke out. Screw this, that one play ruined our year, everyone has a right to be mad.

"To have him taken out by a goon is unconscionable," Melnyk began. "Whether it was accidental, or whether it was reckless, or whether it was intentional, to me it doesn't matter.

"It's something that never should have happened. This player should never be playing in this league. It's a league for elite players," said Melnyk.

"I don't buy any of that garbage. Five times? No, we're number six? How about seven and eight? At what point do you say, 'you know what? Maybe he's not changed.' You do this enough times, don't try to convince me or anybody else. People are way too intelligent. The guy gets suspended five times. That's how many times he's been suspended, never mind how many times he's not been suspended.

"I'm just shocked that that organization employs that type of individual. You've got some good people at the top there. C'mon, these guys are former players, they are elite players, they know what these guys can do. To do this kind of stuff, this guy should be, I don't know, to me it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, that's why I can't even reconcile the thing.

"Frankly if it comes down to everybody wants to play this game, we can play it just as well as anybody else, 'cause these guys are a dime a dozen and that's probably what they're worth per game. A dime. You can hear I'm not very pleased with the whole thing."

While not 100% fair to Cooke in this particular instance, I agree.

Cooke doesn't deserve any fairness at this point in his career. He should not be collecting an NHL minimum paycheck, much less getting whatever his salary is. I want him suspended permanently, stripped of his pension, have his name removed from the Cup, and then have every single player he injured sue him for damages in a civil court.

And after all that I want the IRA to audit his Donkey every year until his miserable existence ends, hopefully on a dirty bed, in a cold house, blind from syphilis.

Of these, only three (Alfie, Turris, Gonch) are expected to contribute offensively. Of these, one guy is 40, one of these guys skates like he's 50, and one of these guys is really young and looks like he's 15.

And of those three, Alfie was not on the ice at practice.

The Euge is gonna pay some mighty fine me thinks. He called out Cooke, The Penguins organization, the league and the refs Laughing3

Did Eugene actually say some untruths? I don't think so...

I have only heard part of the interview on TSN this morning. He has a right to be very angry. This team was heading towards the playoffs this year again which means $$$ for Eugene.

Then Spezza has back issues.. made worse due to something that happened in the Pittsburgh game in Ottawa. Then they take out Karlsson... not an intentionally cut of the achilles tendon.. but I believe he was going to 'hurt' Karlsson in some other manner or try to hurt him anyway.

BTW during the Jets/Pens game last night... Dupuis hurt Enstrom -- either arm or shoulder.. not sure. Not a dirty hit.. but a hard hit. Seems those Pens don't hit to check but hit to hurt...

Karma's a Wing Dang Doodle... it will catch up to them.

Shall we start marking off the days until Apr 22nd?

LOL blaming the Penguins for Spezza's back injury, and for them "hitting to hurt". I've seen it all. Newsflash, everyone is taught to hit to hurt. What is the point of hitting otherwise?

Just stop it already, you're embarrassing yourselves.

I don't mind hitting to hurt personally - as long as it's legal. Dupuis did nothing wrong at all, Enstrom's like 5'4" and he was due to be hurt at some point. Unfortunate for the Jets though - or fortunate maybe, because they're all but guaranteed a top 5 pick now. I thought they'd be good, I was dead wrong.

Lots of crying over spilled milk here for sure, but I don't think anyone would seriously dispute that the Pens get the VIP treatment from the league, largely because they have the faces of the league, Crosby and Malkin, in their lineup. Malkin is a dirty player who should have been disciplined long ago.

Actually, according to the definition of the game, the intent of hitting is to separate the player from the puck. If he doesn't have the puck, it's called interference (early or late hit). The player applying the check is given a bit of leeway with the half-second rule (supposed to let up if hit is a half second or more after the player loses the puck; not sure if there is -- or even could be -- a similar rule for early hits). The actual hit itself also has to fit a few parameters -- no elbows, no targeting of the head (elbow or shoulder or head), no jumping, no hits close to the boards, no long runs at someone to get a hit, etc.

So, yeah, according to the definition and rules of hockey, you are not supposed to hit to hurt. I love big, open-ice hits where the player is in possession of the puck. I hate early or late hits -- I don't care if the player is admiring his pass because late is late, and it doesn't matter whay he does after he no-longer has possession. I think the game is great the way it is written down, without dirty, predatory or intimidating hits.

Can anyone also dispute that the league (and by that I mean Shanahan) has a history of looking the other way when a Sens player gets injured? Ever since I saw Shanahan do that interview mocking the Sens' practice of riding the stationary bike post-game I've had the distinct impression that he did not care much for the franchise. Granted, it's an opinion, and I am not asking you to share it, just to dispute it.

Nothing wrong with Dupuis' hit from what I saw. Unfortunate.

But I *do* mind the hitting to hurt, personally, because that's not the definition of the game. The primary point of a check is to separate the player from the puck, so that you could take that puck the other way and score a goal. The hit can be spectacular -- I'm all for that -- and players will get hurt as a result; they get paid millions so I don't really feel sorry for them (I got hurt playing hockey every once in a while, and my "salary" was negative -- didn't stop me from enjoying it). But if the only reason for a hit is to hurt a player, I cannot condone it unless it is a retaliation for something -- i.e. the player on the receiving end deserves it. Those situations are rare, but they do happen when the league (refs/linesmen/Shanahan) don't do their jobs.
