If Methot and him are still close, I can see him trying to get in touch with him to point out how fun our team is. Karlsson, Spezza, Anderson, Cowen are the nucleus of which championship teams are built, adding a guy like Perry to our already excellent depth would be a huge step in the right direction.

They've got nice pieces over there, but if Perry and/or Getzlaf won't commit to a re-sign soon, they'll be shipped out for valuable pieces. That's the way to do things in this NHL, if you can't/won't keep a superstar, you trade him for pieces that will help you in the VERY near future - not to mention, the $$ savings on an already cash strapped team.

I think they move...before the end of the season (meaning their rights).

Starts with MIchalek IMO.

Look at what Hossa and Kovulchuk went for... we have this discussion every single year and it always ends up with "that's all they got?".

Hossa and Kovalchuk were traded by lottery teams in a rebuild, in need of prospects and a 1st round pick.
Anaheim as of right now has lost 1 game in regulation. If they can't re-sign him they will trade his rights at the end of the season while 29 teams will be lining up. Until then, they will wait for the right offer. Maybe Perry wants to re-sign if he sees the team is going the right direction.
Perry's value Today, at the trade deadline or at the end of the season will be 3 totally different things.

Unless Perry has asked for a trade, that I'm not aware of.

When was the last time someone's rights got traded for anything significant? Hartnell/Timonnen?

How can they move just their rights before the season is over? scratch

I meant that I think they move him by the deadline, not after when it's only his rights. His rights are worth significantly less than what he would be at the deadline.

I would say the Ducks are very much in the same position as the Sens with fewer prospects on the way. They are playing good hockey for sure and Getzlaf is coming back, not a lot of question surrounding him. Perry is a different story and from what I know (which is little and just hearsay) is that he is not resigning and looking to come to the East coast. No idea if its true or not but I would say he will either be a Lead or a Sen by next year.

I'm not sure it'll happen, but this is the time where Bryan Murray must be weighing his options. Does he watch the team for the next 10 days, see how they can do without Spezza, see what Da Costa can do, see how the kids adapt etc, or does he go out and start kicking some serious tires on guys like Weiss and other potential targets.

With Anderson playing the way he is, I'm sure we'll be in the hunt for a playoff spot without Spezza, but we're facing a slightly uphill battle right now.

weiss is the name i hear being thrown around quite a bit but does it make sense? I mean he's not gonna come cheaply. is he a rental? then we don't really want to spend much for him and i'm sure he's not as cheap as we'd like to spend. does he come with an extension? then we've got arguably a 1line center and two 2nd line C moving on after this season... I don't know if that makes sense.

I think what we need to wrap our heads around is that the sense are still a rebuilding team. we have to face the year pretty much with what we've got. if we don't make the playoffs then we're still in a position to continue the rebuild. if we make it then it's gravy.

my point being is i'm all for making trades to make this team better in the long run(like bringing a signed Perry, or a top 4 D) if it meets a long term need. no need to start acting like we're cup contending right now and going after rentals.

and btw for next year, if he's not resigned i'd be looking at mark streit to replace Gonchar on this team. regehr is also an interesting option.
If Horton somehow doesn't get resigned he'd be an interesting UFA to look at.

Yeah, I don't like rentals either really. If Murray thinks we need to at least we have a deep pool, but I much prefer the idea of a signed player.

yeah but it's got to be a be a long term deal IMO, and a guy like Weiss doesn't make much sense long term in Ottawa.

I'm sure BM is saying all the right things but judging from Melnyk's speech at the beginning of the season we're still in rebuilding mode and we won't trade anything significant for a short term band-aid.

Watched that Ducks game last night... no way Perry hasn't checked out. He was awful and has been awful all season.

That is a rather large red flag.

Not sure if it's a red flag. He might not be happy there, he might know he's just playing out the string, maybe management said something to him, etc, etc, etc.

I dunno man...maybe. It's hard for me to swallow that a former Hart Trophy winner would be 'checked' out in what would normally be November of a hockey schedule with his team 6-1. That means when the going gets rough, Perry shuts off.
