Man, I guess that's the best case if it's "not major" surgery. Hoepfully he's not
out too long and the kids can hold the fort down like they have over the past 2 days. Getting over the flu should also help.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2013/01/31/ottawa_senators_jason_spezza_back_surgery/

I guess we'll find out how long they expect him to be out at 11am.

Unfortunately, this is not a surprise. Spezza has averaged 70.7 games per season over the last 7 years, so him missing about a month per year is expected.

Sens will be fine without Spezza.

Of course not.

Ah yes, the picking and choosing of thoughts within a complete statement... gotta love your comments at times.

Compliment: accepted. Cheers

Yup, the one year where he missed a ton of time because of his leg things were already off the rails. Other than that the Sens have always seemed to play well without him and actually put together wins. The days of the one line team are over for the most part so while losing Spezza is a loss there are 13-14 other forwards that will get a chance to shine. Other teams game plans are going to target what line? None, they are going to target Karlsson.

If Ottawa lost Karlsson the season would be over... but they lost a player that someone can step in for.

I never questioned it for one second.

Spezza had 4 seasons with 60-69 games and seasons of 76, 80, and 82 games. So it seems like he alternates seasons of solid health with a season where he misses 4-6 weeks.

Sens will be fine. MacLean knows exactly what he needs from his team and individuals and he will get the best out of the collective group. Anderson has to be awesome, not like it was any different with Spezza and Karlsson needs to be Karlsson, same deal.

Turris will need to step up, Alfi will need to lead, and everyone else just has to do their job. Simple as that.

Could still use another D man though.

Yeah, would be nice to add another D man to help out. Lundin is coming back soon...

Be nice to see Greening and Michalek step up more, and hopefully The Alfie starts potting a few.

It was hilarious last night when he rung one off the post and crossbar...like he was snakebitten. Then The Alfie says FU and buries one 20 seconds later.

Alfi looked waaaaaaaay better last night. But yah, guys will have to step up and Zibanejad based on what I have seen thus far from him will be the guy that people will look at and say "that's the kid that took the opportunity and didn't look back". He doesn't need to be great he just needs to be good enough and hopefully a little better.

That reminded me of when Campoli scored two goals on the same shift when he was with the Islanders. On his first goal, the puck when in and out so fast no one saw and the light didn't go on. He was like "WTF?!?!? Fine, I'll just score again." and then proceeds to score again.

Hilarious.

Spezza with herniated disc surgery, out indefinitely. No timeframe.

Murray says he hopes he's back for the "latter part of the season".

Hopefully he's only out a month?

That's a big Cussing piece to lose for "only a month" in a short season. I'm glad we're winning without him but I'm not super-confident that it can be sustained. I hope I'm dead wrong.

Didn't he miss a bunch of games the year they went to the Finals? Chris Kelly filled in on the top line and they went 9-1. Is Chris available?

Hopefully the recovery is quick and he is back before the end of the season or at the latest, playoffs.

A set back for sure, but the team will have to overcome.

Dan Seguin: Murray says he'll try and replace from within. If that doesn't work he'll look to to make a trade. #cbcott

Sens are open for business...
