Should Sens target Umberger?

Sens should target a few guys. Gives them a better chance of not coming away empty handed.

No. 5 years after this at 4.6 million and he's sputtering right now = not a good sign - and I can buy into the "crap" team excuse only so much. Then you have to think that the Sens want to make their own decisions on who gets long term contracts and who doesn't + we have literally 8 guys coming who will be vying for a spot...if we get someone on a long contract, I think it should be someone like Ryan, not RJ.

I don't see us taking on anyone with term left on their contract. Pretty sure we'll be getting a pure rental if anything. As mentioned, we will have a bunch of guys vying for spots next training camp. And we'll have the FA pool to draw from this summer (ahemZachPariseahem).

Parise will sign whereever the money takes him, like most NHL players. He's due to make some serious moola. And as I've said before, he probably wouldn't mind getting the hell out of New Jersey.

Q: Why are people from New York always depressed?
A: The light at the end of tunnel is New Jersey.

Thank you, Internet.

Bob McKenzie repeated again on Team1200 a few days ago that Parise will for sure test the market. He also said that the Devils would NOT move him for whatever they can get even though they apparently know he's basically gone.

Yup. Do not doubt that Parise knows that teams will be lining up for him, either. And by "knows", I mean his agent was "unofficially" contacted by team representatives.

Anyway, we'll see what happens on that front...more immediate concerns are who's going to be traded by the deadline.

With Anaheim rolling, and the "Big 3" being productive, I assume that they are out of the mix for now.

As mentioned, Huselius is a likely target. He is injury prone (and currently injured, but is supposed to be back soon). He does put up good numbers though, and would likely fit in well on either the first or second line here.

The Blue Jackets are one of the teams out of the playoff picture already, and likely looking to deal. We have a ton of prospects. Good fit there!

Oh boy...we can match anyone's term and $$. 10 years, 75 million? No problemo. Why? Because Parise doesn't ever slack off, he's a leader and he wants to win.

Start warming the engines of the Brinks truck, we're coming in!

That's the thing with Parise. You know he wants to win, so that will factor into his decision as well. If this season had been a write-off for the Sens (like it was expected to be), maybe that would've placed Ottawa far down his list. With us being surprisingly competitive this year AND having a wealth of prospects AND having the cap space AND having an owner willing to open the cheque-book…well, it's seems like a good match.

Parise knows he'd be lining up next to Spezza, so that's gotta look attractive too (look at what that Heatley character accomplished on Spezza's wing).

The one knock against Ottawa, and it may or may not be a major one, is that we're in Canada. Parise's an American. From what I can tell, he's spent pretty much his entire life living in the US (he played at the Unversity of North Dakota, and midget hockey in Minnesota). It's impossible to tell what Parise's thoughts would be on moving north of the border. What is apparent though, is that he is extremely competitive, and so maybe he wants to play in a hockey-mad environement (i.e. any Canadian city).

We'll see.

I was gonna say that about him being American and Minnesota being a perfect fit, but Diddle it, we have a player's coach now in Paul MacLean, we'll see...I think he'll be a major piece in attracting talent.

Uh..yeah, it's very wishful thinking on either Parise or Suter, let alone both, but again, dare to dream.

Our friend Eklund has floated a rumour that Ottawa has interest in Ray Whitney. Source aside, this makes sense, as Whitney will be a UFA, and he certainly fits in that "scoring winger" category.

Three problems:

1) He has a NMC. If Phoenix decides to trade him, Whitney will control where he goes. There will likely be teams with a better shot at winning the cup interested in his services.

2) Asking price. Whitney has 42 pts in 50 games. He's won a Stanley Cup. Phoenix might ask for more than we're willing to give up.

3) Phoenix is in playoff contention. They are only 3 points out of 8th currently. If they do fall further out, moving Whitney at the deadline would make sense.

Always loved the Wizard, have zero illusions about us getting him - he'll be near impossible to get as you pointed out.

Columbus basically 'just' wants to recoup their initial investment in Jeff Carter apparently. That's not gonna be easy when it was Voracek + Couturier, but I guess we know the price on Carter. Blue Chip prospect + young roster player and he's all yours.

He has a NMC that starts in '12/13, so now's the time in a big way.
