Our friend Eklund has floated a rumour that Ottawa has interest in Ray Whitney. Source aside, this makes sense, as Whitney will be a UFA, and he certainly fits in that "scoring winger" category.

Three problems:

1) He has a NMC. If Phoenix decides to trade him, Whitney will control where he goes. There will likely be teams with a better shot at winning the cup interested in his services.

2) Asking price. Whitney has 42 pts in 50 games. He's won a Stanley Cup. Phoenix might ask for more than we're willing to give up.

3) Phoenix is in playoff contention. They are only 3 points out of 8th currently. If they do fall further out, moving Whitney at the deadline would make sense.

Always loved the Wizard, have zero illusions about us getting him - he'll be near impossible to get as you pointed out.

Columbus basically 'just' wants to recoup their initial investment in Jeff Carter apparently. That's not gonna be easy when it was Voracek + Couturier, but I guess we know the price on Carter. Blue Chip prospect + young roster player and he's all yours.

He has a NMC that starts in '12/13, so now's the time in a big way.

Our friend Eklund aside, Darren Dreger says that the 1st "big forward" to move will be Tuomo Ruutu and that he will be moved next week. This was part of a discussion where he mentioned that there would be a lot of activity immediately after the all-star break.

Staying on the topic of Columbus, the following players are undoubtedly available:

Pahlsson - Cost: 3rd round pick
Huselius - Cost: 4th round pick + mid range prospect
Prospal - 2nd round pick
Martinek - 4th round pick or less
Lebda - whatever you want to give

I can believe that, it's time for Carolina to start weighing offers and making moves - same with Columbus in a big way. Let's get it on!

Yep, I saw/heard the same thing from Dregs. A lot of teams will be looking to get a jump on the trade deadline, especially given the tight playoff race. Only the teams out of the picture at this point will really be looking to deal, and that means Columbus and Carolina. It'll be very interesting to see if Carter is moved. You gotta think his value is still pretty high, but if he rots in Columbus much longer, they might not be able to recoup their investment.

I just hope that all the good moves aren't done before the deadline, so there's still lots of intrigue heading into that last day.

He's gonna move for sure, either by the deadline, or at the draft. They don't want to be saddled with a 60 million dollar player who doesn't want to be there and who isn't helping.

Really long contract, injury prone, rumors of him being a problem in Philadelphia .... I don't know, I doubt he'll score 40+ goals ever again.

I don't like him personally, but I think he could if he was to play wing for example.

He mostly played wing in Philly I believe.

Still it seems he's always injured it and of questionable character.

Even with (say) Spezza here I doubt he'd score 40.

Hmmm...that's a tough question to answer. Again, I don't like him, I find his character questionable as well and he seems to be always injured, but...I think with Spezza he could do some damage. 40 is a tough number as Milan Michalek is starting to find out, but I think he might be able to do it with a solid passing C like Spezza - not that I'm advocating getting him, I'm definitely not.

I think it's safe to assume that he will land in Ottawa between now and the deadline.

I wouldn't cry, but it wouldn't be optimum. Especially on a 10 year term with a NMC kicking in next summer.

CBJ are looking to trim salary so I expect that it will cost Murray some picks and prospects. Will be interesting to see who he moves.

Its only an NTC for a few years then a limited NTC (Submit a list of teams etc.)

We got rid of most of our "party crowd players", we don't need to bring them back Laugh1
