Most of the time its the parents fault. Source, I used to be fat.

Key word there and yes I agree... parents are too lazy and know nothing about healthy eating.

SSF, if I had the energy to shovel snow at 3AM (much less sweeping it later in the day) I don't think I'd be taking offense to NEELY's comment.

Also, I'm not the resident geezer.

It's the elite's fault for creating a consumer society. Taking both (lazy) parents out of the house to work and earn money to buy prepared food and eat in restaurants. Ensuring that they are too tired and/or don't have time to prepare meals much less have time to grow their own healthy food.

And my parents weren't active because of their own health problems so their kids weren't really active either

Yup, that's a big pet peeve. "I can't stand Subban" but some how that is translated to people as "I hate Subban because he's black".

Spoken like someone who has never had kids.  We read all the books, followed all the recommendations, introduced veggies/fruits before meats, introduced them to various foods early, tried to cook from scratch (as much as possible), tried the old "no dessert until you finish your greens", limited desserts (1-2 a week), didn't buy chips/cookies/etc., water or milk instead of juice, etc. etc. etc.  Two of them hardly ever eat any vegetables; one of them eats pretty much everything; one of them eats nearly nothing but KD.

My wife grew up in a meat-potatoes-dessert family but she eats healthy -- lots of veggies, non-meat dinners at least twice a week, never finishes her desserts (not that she cuts a big slice, anyway).

Nature is a huge component of your fitness level, much more so (IMO) than nurture.

No reason for kids to be inactive, none.

Certainly genes play a big role in it, but if you are on the heavier side, you just have to work that much harder to stay slim. Being fat is the #1 contributer to a whole ton of health problems.

Again, the elites create distractions that keep them inactive.

One thing's for sure. When I need advice on how to raise my kids and ensure they're healthy and fit my first place to turn is always someone in their 20s or 30s with no kids. Who's with me?

Ask my parents then, they raised 2 pretty active and fit children. Same for the fiances except the raised 4 of them. It's a cycle like anything else and IMO it's a form of abuse in a lot of ways. Up to the parents to break it.
