Yeah, the other alternative is for them to wait until training camp, see where the chips fall, and trade away the extra pieces. However, it may be harder to get trades done then.

From the comments section in TSN's story on Ryan Keller signing with Edmonton:

How did they get him so cheap, aren't the Canucks going to miss him, he was a candidate for playoff MVP this year...good bargain for the Oilers. Sedins need to find a new linemate

Hard to top that Laughing3

Touche.

In general manager Bryan Murray's mind, he's exactly what's needed by a team that figures to be much younger in the season to come. Nobody agreed with that more than Paul MacLean, the Senators' new head coach.

"Paul and I had talked earlier about adding this kind of player," said Murray. "No. 1, he competes every night. No. 2, he can provide some leadership on the ice and some competitiveness on the ice, and No. 3, he wins faceoffs and brings that dimension to our hockey club. We like to have the puck and Paul was adamant that we be strong in that area. I hope we’ve addressed part of that, at least, in adding Zenon.

"We hope he’ll bring, with another couple of guys on his line, a real feistiness to our lineup. We believe that he can kill penalties. A number of people will get that opportunity and he’ll certainly be one of them."

Looks like Paul MacLean had a hand in this, insisting we have good faceoff guys.

Hehe it's a tossup, I don't even look at FB comments anymore, I've seen a lot of stupid comments combined with the mandatory leaf fans trolling (why do they follow the Sens on FB anyway ?)

Well, to be fair, I'm expecting both Butler and Condra to get 1-way deals, especially considering the Smith and Greening deals. We'll see in time I guess, but I think Condra walks away with a 1-way deal. If so, all of a sudden we have 13 forwards on 1-way deals, and that's throwing aside the question of Zibanejad and Da Costa. Can't imagine that we want to have any of the kids sit for expended periods.

We'll see -- but I smell a deal or two before it's all done.

Interesting. I'm not sure about Condra, so I can't really say anything. He looked ready to me, but I thought they might give him one more year in the AHL just based on numbers alone - and that was before this signing.

Maybe you're right. I think if anything, this spells the end of Zibanejad playing on the Sens this year, Da Costa too I imagine. Can Ziban play in the AHL? I assume so because he's an import.

I've never played hockey.. but I've been watching it for a very long time.

To me Condra has great on-ice vision. Is very good defensively. That stood out to me when he was on the PK after the trade deadline. He should be on the team.. along with Greening, Butler and Zack Smith.

Sens PK had better be very good this year... as Konopka spends a lot of time in the penalty box. Is he brought in for the extra forward for his toughness.. playing against teams like Toronto or Boston?

Murray has the same office chair as I do.

Unfortunately, I have no television remotes on my desk.

He's being brought it to provide toughness to a very small, young team. Not to mention he, paired up with Neil and Smith, will be a very tough line to play against. He's also a beast in the face-off circle. Good signing, minimal risk. Murray is having quite the successful off-season.

I like this signing. I particularly like rooneypoo's reading. I think we're gonna make a deal soon.

Konopka sounded good and said all the right things on the Team 1200 today.

Sounds like a good signing for us.

Hopefully he won't take too many stupid penalties.

I have to agree with rooney, this has open the door t a trade. and like someone else said (and when they aren't farting political statements from the mouth, can add intelligent anecdotes to the conversation) Carkner may be one of the best candidates to be leaving. In all honesty we better make a package a la Brian Burke to receive something delicious in return in the way of a single prospect or player since on one for ones, we ain't going to get much for a Foligno or a Winni or a Carkner.... or a Kuba. package something up BM. and get that glimmer of senility I'm starting to see into your eyes out of there.
uou just got 3 more years to prep the ranks and make this team a contender again.

I love the signing. Cheap and very useful as a 4th liner and face-off specialist.

Yeah, he and Greening both appear to have excellent on-ice vision and excellent smarts on the ice. Should make for a good PKing duo at some point I would imagine.

As for Konopka, he'll take some penalties for sure, but he's also a great PKer himself, so yeah, we should have a decent PK next year (not to mention Anderson).

245 of Konopka's accumulated PIMS from last season are accounted for in fighting majors (125) misconducts (100) and game misconducts (20).

Leaves 62 minutes in minor penalties (no majors other than fighting).

He gets a lot of minutes, but those aren't minutes you have to kill per se.
