Penner will help but why bother ? Very slim chance we're making the playoffs , why trade for a player who'll be a hot commodity at July 1st 2012 ?

They've kept the core veteran players (plus a few untradeable players I am sure) and made room for our best prospects to come in and see what they can do. Filatov is their big top-6 LW acquisition, he'll get more time and chances than any other team would give him and hopefully the coaching staff can make an NHL player out of him. If he fails he'll go to Bingo and someone like Greening may move up, maybe they'll call Hoffman up too. If the Filatov deal never happened then I could see them go after Penner.

If this team is miraculously in a possible playoff position by the deadline Murray may possibly go for such a player.

I see the benefits and I think I'd be all for it but that doesn't seem like what they're doing for next season.

If LA actually wants to dump him (I really don't know if they do or not) then trading a guy like Foligno who's upside is that of less than what Penner is, I would make that deal every time. I'm not saying Ottawa should break the bank for him but if they can trade a bottom 6 player for Penner, do it.

When Lombardi called him out by saying:

“He’s at the crossroads of his career. He can choose with his athletic ability to be one of the dominant power forwards in the National Hockey League or he can be a dominant number four hitter for the El Cid Lounge in a men’s softball league.”

I took it that they're not trading (maybe because there's no interest) him.

Why publicly devalue an asset you want to trade ?

Someone like Penner isn't even worth worrying about right now. If by some miracle we're in contention for 8th at the deadline, then re-assess, but right now Penner just confuses our lineup even more. One of Butler, Michalek, Alfredsson or Filatov goes to line 3 I assume and someone has to sit out in the bottom 6 besides Winchester - who I assume is already sitting. Why bother really? Let Filatov sink or swim, same with Butler, if one of them doesn't do it, then bring on Greening, then Condra and so on.

If we want to overcrowd our lineup, let's sign one of Morrison or Prospal to a 1-year deal and have then center line 2, keep it warm for Z-Bad or Da Costa or whoever, then try to trade them at the deadline for an asset.

exactly. even if we're in contention for 8th spot(which i doubt) I don't even want him. there's players that get flagged too many times. he's one of them.

I'm not sure what he's getting at.

F - Filatov, Da Costa, Zibanejad, O'Brien, Silfverberg(if he changes his mind and comes to camp)

Filatov is the only guy who's pretty much guaranteed to make the team, the others are unlikely. 50/50 best chance for Zib. The others aren't ready or will be in Sweden. We can sit a forward out like Winchester

D - Rundblad, Cowen, Borowiecki, Gryba, Wiercioch

Only one of Rundblad or Cowen (most likely Cowen) will make the team, we can sit a D-man out (most likely Carkner). Others are not ready (except maybe Rundblad).

G - Lehner (Barring injury to Anderson he'll be in Bingo, but I had to include the AHL player MVP)

Lehner is in Bingo all year unless Anderson is out long term.

We've never carried more than 21 players before but we've never been a cap floor team either.

He's working from the premise that we won't carry an extra forward, which I think is a bad assumption to make. He bases it on the fact that we never have, but in the past we've been dealing with the upper limit of the cap.

The point that having 12 one way contracts makes for a less competitive camp is likely valid, though. Especially since Filatov will be given every chance to start the team. Unless something changes, it's hard to argue guys like Zibanejad, Da Costa, Silfverberg, Petersson or O'Brien have a prayer of making the team out of camp. They (with the exception of Silfverberg and Zibanejad) do have to compete to be the first considered for call ups, though).

On D, I think you'll see a pretty healthy competition between Rundblad and Cowen at least. Gryba and Wiercioch are real outside shots at this point, though.

Goaltending spots are obviously spoken for barring injury.

Yeah, I didn't even look twice. You have to factor in Filatov and that will cause a disruption in the lineup.

A few forwards and d-men will be traded, no doubt.

Why though? Can't we carry 13 or 14 forwards? And 7 D?

They will be traded to fit in the actual good players.

Winchester, Kuba, and Regin will not be on this team in September.

Bullroar. Good luck trading Kuba, Winchester is a great injury replacement in the bottom 6 and you don't trade a talented, skilled player like Regin because he had a terrible sophomore year. It's called the Sophomore Slump, not the Sophomore Awesome. Give him a chance!

Even if you give him a chance, his upside isn't much better than most of the players we have/prospects coming up.

Winchester is irrelevant now as well. Don't see him fitting anywhere on the team.

You can carry up to 23 but the Sens never have. They typically carry 21 with the 21st being a forward.

The reality he's painting is there's room for one more forward and possibly one more D at the most when you look at the 1-way contracts.

So, either they move some 1-way's to free up some room for competition or we stand pat.

I think there's a few guys the team would like to move, but Murray seems convinced he can get value for them - if not now, then at the deadline.

Worse comes to worse, we have some players who are good enough to be in the NHL playing in the AHL. There are worse positions to be in.

He's failing to consider moves. We've been saying for quite a while that at least one forward and hopefully one defenseman will be moved (the forward possibly sweetening the pot to get the defenseman on a plane ticket out). Also, Regin may have a 1-way but he's under 25 with one year left, and he'll be very cheap to buy out.

No he's not, he's just not guessing at any moves...

"The point being, it's a pretty good bet Bryan Murray will be looking to shed at least a couple of one way contracts through trade prior to training camp, or at the latest, prior to the start of the season."
