What are the odds that he'll be able to handle it ? How many 18 year olds are ready to step into a top-6 NHL role ?

I think it will be Regin vs. Da Costa vs. Zibanejad. May the best one win.

We're rebuilding and years and years away from making the playoffs, etc. BeatingaDeadHorse

Yes but do we want to rush a player into the league ? Historically the Sens have been very cautious in bringing prospects into the NHL.

The plan is to let the kids learn and grow while we continue to stockpile picks for the next half-decade. Sarcasm

They had to sign him by the 15th or he can't play in the NHL next year.

Either he makes the team or he goes back to the SEL.

They had to sign him by Friday so they didn't have to pay Djurgarden $100K if they signed him after that, but before August 15.

Yeah, I'm not sure if he can handle it, but again, our coaching staff is full of teachers, so perhaps that was taken into consideration.

Can he play in Bingo if he starts with the Sens and we want to send him down? I think that's the best league for him to get 40 games or so, then play NHL hockey from there on out.

Look at the J.Staal situation. He played his 9 games and the Pens realized that he's capable of playing third line minutes. Unfortunately this is a tougher situation as you're taking a player who's not used to the North American game, and you're relying on him to produce in a top-six role. I think he should do his 9 games and be sent down to the minors. Keep him down there with Lehner (who I'm sure he'll get along just fine with) and assure him a roster spot next season.

My understanding is that it's either NHL or SEL. He has 1 year obligation in Sweden, the only way out of it is if he plays in the NHL.

Hmm, interesting scenario...don't really know how that's gonna work out.

There was an interesting article in the T.O. Sun about Tim Connoly that I think applies to all rookies.

Basically said how the guy had all the skills in the world and when drafted by the Isles that the GM refused to send him back to the OHL despite his junior team and NHL coach saying that he was not ready for the NHL. The feeling is among these people, other NHL execs and media who followed him, say that it hurt his development by not allowing him to be more of a leader in the OHL.

From what I've seen of Connolly, he's a great player - skill-wise anyway, but he's brittle. If it weren't for his extended injuries every year, he'd be a 70+ point guy IMO, but alas, same as Michalek, injuries find that guy (and Schaefer).

Michalek and Neil are our best "net crashers", maybe Foligno and Greening as well.

As for Penner I been thinking about it but I got the impression LA is going to give him another chance since that trade looks awful for them right now. I'm sure Terry has told Bryan about how bad/lazy Penner is discouraging any talk of a trade. It might take more than Foligno to get him as well, LA will want to recover from this.

If he's physically and mentally in the right place I hope Filatov gets legit top-6 time to get his NHL game going. He's got too much potential for them to stick him in a checking role and wait til he's "defensively responsible" enough.

So far Murray's comments indicate they're set for next season barring depth signings for Bingo. Filatov is the top-6 forward they were going to trade for or acquire via FA. Thankfully they didn't go the FA route seeing the ridiculous contracts handed out.

At worst we'll land Yakupov or Grigorenko next June Cheering

Penner is a UFA next season. Just wait.. and fight it out with the Leafs to get him.

Just out of curiosity for those who don't like Penner, who had more goals than him in Ottawa the last 2 years? Just curious. It's not like he would have led The Sens in goals... also he played in Edmonton those last 2 years with little to no help at all.

Penner will help but why bother ? Very slim chance we're making the playoffs , why trade for a player who'll be a hot commodity at July 1st 2012 ?

They've kept the core veteran players (plus a few untradeable players I am sure) and made room for our best prospects to come in and see what they can do. Filatov is their big top-6 LW acquisition, he'll get more time and chances than any other team would give him and hopefully the coaching staff can make an NHL player out of him. If he fails he'll go to Bingo and someone like Greening may move up, maybe they'll call Hoffman up too. If the Filatov deal never happened then I could see them go after Penner.

If this team is miraculously in a possible playoff position by the deadline Murray may possibly go for such a player.

I see the benefits and I think I'd be all for it but that doesn't seem like what they're doing for next season.

If LA actually wants to dump him (I really don't know if they do or not) then trading a guy like Foligno who's upside is that of less than what Penner is, I would make that deal every time. I'm not saying Ottawa should break the bank for him but if they can trade a bottom 6 player for Penner, do it.

When Lombardi called him out by saying:

“He’s at the crossroads of his career. He can choose with his athletic ability to be one of the dominant power forwards in the National Hockey League or he can be a dominant number four hitter for the El Cid Lounge in a men’s softball league.”

I took it that they're not trading (maybe because there's no interest) him.

Why publicly devalue an asset you want to trade ?
