It's a chance for sure, but he's looked great this year from what I've seen. Skilled, tough and he looks like he's over the concussion.

Already looking at players who we can snag with Nashville's pick. Would love Matt Puempel, great goal scorer.

Does that strike anyone else as a tad dramatic? “Burn it to the ground rebuild”? Probably not the best way to describe what Bryan Murray is trying to accomplish. The cap space could be easily used to sign quality FAs.

Maybe but I sort of agree with the sentiment. Who is ready to step in and play as our #2 Center? We don't have one now that Fisher is gone, so the question is do they use the money from Fisher to get one off of the UFA market, or promote from within? If it's within then it's likely 2 to 3 years before we find one.

With Fisher going you are in a Burn it to the Ground mode...you've dumped a 2nd line center with no replacement and you already know there is a huge possibility that your #1 dman is going and possibly the one you just signed in the off season (Gonchar). Trade Ruutu and you've traded away 4 pieces of your current team that other than Ruutu I don't see us as having bonafide replacments for.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer an Edmonton style rebuild. Go young and save cap space for a year or two and possibly force other teams to pay through the nose for you to rescue them from their cap woes.

Love it..

So, did this trade just save the Preds? You know if there's a chance they get moved... Carrie Underwood would just buy the team and keep it in Nashville.

Heh.

Toronto is doing their best to devalue that pick lately though....

We don't even have a second line center with Fisher in the lineup. He's a 3rd line center, and so is Kelly. And quite frankly, Kelly has kicked his Donkey in that department this year.

Yeah, whole new meaning to looking at the draft order + players in there.

Hate to repeat myself but this is what's happening:

This is perfect. Load up on picks this year because there was no way Ottawa was NOT going to try to make the playoffs next season.

Very aggressive turnaround strategy.

By the way, Kelly is an instant improvement on Fisher.

With Fisher or without Fisher, we didn’t have a 2nd line centre. We had two third line centres in him and Kelly. We don’t have a 2nd line centre this season (barring another trade), but that doesn’t mean that one won’t be signed in the offseason. Lots of cap room. I don’t know who’s available this summer off the top of my head, but there’s bound to be a few good candidates.

EDIT: So it sounds like we're all mostly in agreement. Bobby Mac verbally twitter-puked, and our prospects to get a 2nd line centre have just IMPROVED with the cap space that's been freed up.

True, but you can't ignore the face that he's a forward playing at a level of which we don't have a replacement in bingo..he takes up 21 minutes a game, and while I agree he's not playing at a 2nd line pace, he's still a good player who doesn't cost us.

Unless you can mention a player who we have who can play his role then we're in a burn it down rebuild. Kelly can absolutely, but Kelly isn't a #2 center either, and if you move him up, then who takes his ice time? It's easy to say he wasn't playing at the level he should be for a #2, and I completely agree. Love the move and think it's perfect, but you can't tell me we aren't in burn it down rebuild mode when you remove a big piece of the team with no one in a position to make up for his absence.

We could end up drafting twice in the top 10 if Nash finishes low enough...

Our admin has one of those Fisher "Coke" cutouts with her feather boa around his neck. She's sitting shiva now. And she's not even Jewish.

Someone mentioned that this trade explains why O'Brien was around but sitting. I love that we'll get a chance to see what he can do. I wonder if this means that we give Regin another shot at 2nd line C?

Maybe he's busy drinking urine or getting kicked by a horse or ... wait, no, that's hemlock.

Yep, and that's in reference to Kuba. For the record, I think this trade is great.

Big, bold move.

I'm not surprised to see Fisher traded (I've been saying for a while that he seems like the logical guy to move), but I'm surprised we did it now (I thought it would be off-season for sure).

The return is, tho', so-so. I really thought it would be 1st round + a prospect. I guess we always overvalue our own, tho'.

Two 1st round prospects at the forward position is what the doctor ordered for this team, that's for sure.

Sounds 3rd round pick regardless....turns into a 2nd rounder if they make it pas 2 rounds....as per the Sens official website

"Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired a first-round draft pick in the 2011 entry draft and a third-round draft pick in 2012 from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Mike Fisher. The selection in 2012 can move up to a second-round pick."

So ... prospect guys (ASQ2 I'm looking at you). If we have an opportunity for another 1st round pick; do we take it in 2011 or 2012 ?

There's more to it than just that though. There were a couple of guys I was chatting with that seemed to have a little better connections than just the common fan - and they were saying that they heard it was TO's pick to Ottawa for Phillips - which none of us understood.

So you start putting 2 and 2 together + Chirp was saying he'd heard some rumblings and he was 100% the guy who broke this trade (and others).
