For those that missed it. Murray confirmed
on conf call that return for Fisher is just the 1st if Preds don't make
it out of 1st rd this yr

That's slightly weak.

Remember a few days ago when marakh or asq was saying how amazing it would be to draft with a lottery pick, and a mid-to-late first rounder? I can't speak for everyone, but I thought that that was unlikely unless we gave up a prospect. Instead, we shed a (somewhat albatross-y) salary and, while we lost a great character guy, the player we gave up hasn't been himself lately and never really made it over the hump. We've been complaining about paying him to be a 2nd line center when, with his skillset, he should be on the 3rd.

We got another first AND we got rid of a player that simply wasn't cutting it anymore. Top it off with an extra $4.2M in space and I say we got a great deal.

Oh yeah, I agree. All in all, it's a very attractive deal - and don't rest yet, there might be a pretty decent bidding war coming between Boston and Montreal for Phillips, that could be the perfect scenario for the Sens. Doesn't sound like Kaberle will waive, Pitkanen's not going anywhere, Foster might go, but big difference between him and Phillips. Not too many guys out of it with D to spare. The Sharks will get desperate too, we might actually have an outside chance of shedding Kuba. Maybe - out of the blue - at the 11th hour someone gets real desperate and pays heavily for Gonchar.

So many scenarios. Ahhhhh!

Murray has made me more interested in the playoffs with this deal. Essentially he is gambling on the success of the Preds.

Still happy overall with the deal. Don't forget this money can go to a UFA, so it's essentially Fisher for 1 or 2 picks and the UFA.

Haha.

Depending on the actual condition of the deal and how Nashville does in the playoffs this season, watch Murray go out this offseason and steal Shea Weber in order to weaken the Preds next season; in turn getting a better pick from Nashville with that conditional 2012 selection.

Meh I think the cap savings will toward saving Eugene money.

Except for goaltending not much out there in FA, and we've had the money for a goalie anyway with Leclaire leaving.

I'm scared we'll sign one of the top goalies to a Giguere-like contract and they'll proceed to suck leaving us with their fat untradeable contract (especially if it's 35+) and still no real goalie behind what will be a young defence.

This team just has no luck with big-name FA (and goalies) except Hasek it seems.

Probably a better chance Lehner bucks the trend and is ready to play next year.

It has nothing to do with next season, it's their success in this season's playoffs that matters.

For the round, yes. Not for the order within that round.

That is what I have been trying to say; but I have been up since 4AM.

Two things.

In the Fisher video, did anyone else notice the clip of Murray talking to Alfredsson and Spezza? Why wasn't Phillips in on that little pow-wow? Where was he? Let your minds wander there. Haha.

In the Murray video, the GM stated that "young prospects eventually" will be coming in trades.

I was watching just now and it's the first thing I noticed -- not necessarily that Phillips wasn't there but that it was only Alfie and Spezza. Phillips may be moved, of course, but the other implication is that he was talking to the current and future Captain of the team.

Never know, of course, since a new coach and a bunch of new players will decide.

He saves about $1M in salary this year alone. That's like one playoff game. Fewer women at the game, perhaps, and O'Brien is *definitely* not a replacement in that respect. I mean, he's no Mike Ricci but still.

Team 1200 mentions a bunch of angry season ticket holders cancelling due to Fisher being traded.

It makes me wonder who they will market as the face of the franchise.

- Alfie's career is winding down
- Spezza isn't very well liked in this town from what I see
- Fisher is gone
- Philips will most likely be gone
- Kovalev ... LOL

Who will they hang out front at SBP ?

Karlsson, Cowen and Rundblad may be at some point, Karlsson is closest due to his All Star appearance but who else ? Lehner ?

Karlsson for sure...definitely Spezza. I think the Spezza-haters are coming around, especially after this losing streak with him out of the lineup.

People cancelling their tickets because of the Fisher trade just speaks volumes to some of the bizzare-o fanbase Ottawa has. A lot of upper-middle-class Kanata/Stittsville folk who have season tickets just for something to do. I wouldn't classify them as true hockey fans...still, they are integral to the support of this team. I really hope that ticket sales don't suffer too much next year.

It's probably a foregone conclusion that ticket sales and attendance will be lower next year.

I don't see Melnyk spending to the cap, especially with the CBA expiry looming.

Personally I hope we ice a young competitive team with potential, acquire a real goaltender and go into the season with plenty of cap space and wait for other teams to come to us and help them solve their cap issues. Then we can more or less have the upper hand and dictate the terms of the trade. Except for a goalie I don't really see us blowing money on FA.

We're in for some tough years. I don't buy Murray's optimism that we'll be competitive next year.

McKenzie's assessment of the trade is bang on in my opinion.

- The Sens are immediately weaker losing Fisher, replacing him with someone else in the lineup or a callup
- Whoever we draft with the Preds' pick will not be in the league for 2-3 years (most likely), if we get and use the conditional pick it will be 3-4 at least. Unless we make a trade we don't benefit from this trade for another few years
- In the short term things are going to get worse as established players are traded for draft picks and prospects

Of course in the long run we hope to have a great young team who can compete for years. Trades, luck will play a part in whether that happens sooner or later.

Short term pain for long term gain.

Of course this is Ontario so all that matters is who will return to contention faster (Toronto or Ottawa) Laugh1

To be honest, if Eugene doesn't care, I don't either. And it's pretty clear to me he is willing to go whatever route to bring the cup, be it lower attendance or not.

Explain to me again how this will make things worse in the short-term? We’ll keep losing, but at least have a legitimate reason?

I disagree, best case scenario is for the Preds to finish dead list this year with us finishing 2nd last.

Wink

Not realistic I know, but that is the *true* best case scenario, while we talking scenarios and all.

Dare to dream...
