Vancouver is getting ripped off HARD in that Fisher deal. Fisher + Shannon for Schneider wouldn't even cut it, now you're adding Bieksa?!?!

Frolov isn't a guy you want to have in a rebuild (or in any situation). He's useless now.

Connolly is the same type of player whom we have a bunch of. Talented but injury prone. Pass.

Shane O'Brien is a headcase. He's a decent d-man though.

Schneider is an ufa afternext year and is not going to sign to be vancouvers back up for the next 5-6 years. He will want to be a number one somewher-Fisher and shannon add more grit to their forward ranks which you need for a cup run. Schneider is going to be available and ottawa needs to make an attempt to get him. Bieksa is an ufa next year and i would rather have him than phillips-if vancouver doesn't think they can keep him he will be available as they have depth on defence.

frolov is a chance i agree, but when he is on he can put on a show and you have to sell tickets even in a rebuild

obrien is a shot blocker and will fight. If we are doing a rebuild and bringing in youth you need someone to protec them other than Carkner.

RFA.

Regardless, I can't wait to hear McGuire's reaction to this tomorrow morning.

In that first video, as Phillips and Alfie are talking, Garrioch is standing there wearing what might be the nicest sweater I've ever seen.
Heh. Argyle sweaters never go out of style... do they?

Wink

It almost looks like he's checking out Alfie's ass and giving him a look up and down... WTF?

Ever seen that Seinfeld episode where Kramer bathes in butter, and Newman sees him as a nice roasted chicken?

Garrioch was probably gauging how yummy Aflie would be. Delicious no doubt.

Well, I think we all knew this was coming - the rebuild, not necessarily the article. It's the right move.

It's a bit of a drag we've started sucking in a year when the top draft-eligible forwards aren't as good as they've been in years past, though. I'd take Hall, Seguin, Tavares, Duchene, Stamkos, Kane, etc. over the o-men this year. 2012 is heavier on defencemen, too.

I'm glad they're keeping Murray on as an advisor. I want his input in the draft.

From reading those two articles it sounds to me like the only untouchables are our current prospects and guys like Karlsson, Smith, Butler, maybe Regin and Foligno. Also, any of the vets that get traded are to bring back young players or prospects.

Even the Alfie isn't safe! Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh!

Wow, Phillips and Alfredsson are on opposite side of the same question.
I didn't see it like that, more of two different ways of saying the same thing. Alfie was making the point that the questions will stop being a distraction and the team can focus on the task at hand. Bottom line was both were saying the focus is on playing hard, doing their job and competing game in and game out, which is the usual company line.

Assuming it's a complete tear down, as is being implied in the article, It's hard to say if guys like Phillips and Fisher would want to stick around and see if this latest 5 year plan works out or not. It would be an interesting time for them and lots of mentoring but, with Phillips in his early 30s and Fisher in his late 20s, they may want to go to teams with a more immediate shot at a Cup.

I would like to think Phillips would stick around but I wouldn't blame him if he waived and went to a potential contender.

If we get rid of Philips we're going to need some solid veteran D-man to replace him. They'll probably trade him if the main focus is to get rebuilding assets.

They aren't seriously considering playing mostly rookie D-men next year aren't they ?

Gonchar will stay, I don't see him being very tradeable, mind you I could see him waiving his NMC to go to a contender although his contract will make that very difficult, maybe in his last year at the deadline.

If Gonchar is indeed "unhappy" he'll waive if there's a deal to be made... but I have doubts Murray can get one done due to the contract... but you never know.

Same for Kovalev. Hopefully we can get "something" before he walks away.

Some rumours now of Ron Hextall and Julien Brisebois being in the running for the GM role. Brisebois was the 'up and coming French GM' mentioned in one of the articles.

Ok, so, Melnyk was on PTS yesterday on Fan 590 and was tossing around the term "serious contender next year"... and today I read references from Murray about being a "contender" next year... what?

I was encourraged by the initial comments by Melnyk and Murray about staying the course, being active at the trade deadline, getting a high draft pick and bringing in youth next year etc... but to think we're going to be contenders, let alone "serious" contenders next season is way off the mark.

I know Melnyk doesn't want to scare season ticket holders away... but let's call a spade a spade here...

Murray just means the goal is to make the playoffs next year, which is what anyone would expect him to say. And anything goes in the post-season.

don't think it's possible to do a full rebuild post salary cap, you can't just trade away non-expiring contracts that easily and we're not going to "Wade Redden" anyone here either.

We've got a few expiring contracts, they may be able to trade away a few more. They'll be hopefully be replaced by our NHL ready prospects. Can't do much else barring a good trade offer coming along.

As I said in another thread Murray has way too much faith in this team, a new GM would be much more objective. Murray should have done more than just sign Gonchar this summer.

Heh, well, we can't have owners and GMs saying "We want to be mediocre next year... and then, we'll target the playoffs after that!!!!"

Making the playoffs are what every team says their target is every year to their fans. If they don't, then fans should question their commitment to the game, team etc...

Is it realistic? Who knows... we're certainly not Cup contenders... so I take exception to Melnyk's "serious contenders" comment, but I know why he's saying that.

New GM, new Coach, new system, new goalie(s), some fresh young players, no Leclaire, no Kovalev, no Clouston etc... lots of variables there that will have an impact.

At the very least, it should be interesting.
