Anyone scared about having the 1st or 2nd overall pick? Who do you choose? And there's so much pressure to make the right choice. Look at 2009 - Tavares #1, Hedman #2 and Colorado basically is given the easiest choice in Duchene.

If you have the (#1/#2/#3/#4) pick, who do you choose if you are the GM of the Senators?

Assuming the top 5 is: Couturier, Larsson, Nugent-Hopkins, Landeskog and Saad.

If you have the #1, do you take Larsson? Do you take Couturier? Nugent-Hopkins? Or do you trade that choice to another team and pick up another selection in the process?

Look how well that turned out..

You're comparing what a GM said with what the owner said.
So? Message is the same...

The Globe and Mail has learned certain aspects about Melnyk's plan:

- General manager Bryan Murray will finish out the year in his position but will move on to a senior advisory role similar to that held by coaching legend Scotty Bowman with the Chicago Blackhawks. Murray, who stayed on this season at Melnyk’s request, is open to this change as friends say the results of this season have left him “sickened.”

- coach Cory Clouston will also play out the year, but is highly unlikely to stay on as head coach. The new GM will have full responsibility for naming the coach of his choice.

Murray’s immediate task will be the “selling off” of player assets heading into the Feb. 28 NHL trading deadline. If playoff-bound teams are interested in the likes of forward Alexei Kovalev or defenceman Sergei Gonchar, two unhappy and underperforming expensive veterans, deals could be forthcoming. It is even possible that longtime stalwarts such as captain Daniel Alfredsson and defenceman Chris Phillips could be moved it they agree to the deals.

The team will make no statements leading into this time from, but one source says “our actions will speak for themselves.”

The new general manager – tentative interviews have already taken place, with deeper interviews to come – would be in place for the June entry draft. At the moment, the presumption is that the team will finish low enough to qualify for the lottery that determines the first five picks. A top pick is considered a priority for the rebuilding process.

Over the summer, the new GM, with Murray acting as consultant, would be expected to re-calibrate the team by chasing prospects rather than expensive free agents, as has been the case in past summers. Re-signing veterans whose contracts are expiring is no longer a priority.

Nor is saving this season.

It is, as of this weekend, considered a lost cause – and the first step toward a necessary fix.

Kovalev and Gonchar are unhappy? Those poor guys... must be so sad cashing those cheques...

At least the "plan" seems to be one that makes sense and will hopefully prepare us well for the draft.

I'm in agreement with everything that's in there (I do hope we don't trade the Alfie however). Good job on the GlobeAndMail who appears to be better connected to the SENS than The Sun ... Wink

Yeah, I agree, that's some good news... except the part were this team, on top of being coach-killers & a goalie graveyard, is now on the verge of being labeled GM-killers, too. Laugh1

I feel sorry for Clouston in all of this. Murray gets to stay on, plus he can retire already. The players (the underperforming ones) got their guaranteed contracts (well, most of them). Clouston gave up his AHL job and moved his family up here and for what? He's not going to get his old job back, and he's not getting a sniff an an NHL position anytime soon -- or ever.

I don't see the team as being GM killers. We've really only had 2 GM's in the last 10 years.

Murray's been GM for 4 years now, I'd say that's a good run. He's getting up there in age and most people can see that it's time for a change. Giving him a Senior Advisory role is perfect.

I don't feel sorry for Clouston at all. He knows it's a business, and if he did a better job he might not be in the position of being unemployed at the end of the season. That's the Cussing way she goes.

I was referring to this line in particular:

"Murray, who stayed on this season at Melnyk’s request, is open to this change as friends say the results of this season have left him “sickened.”"

The way it's presented there, it sounds like the whole experience of this year soured the guy on being a GM altogether.

The article also says that he stayed on at Melnyk's request, and if that's true, it sounds like he didn't want to be here in the first place as GM. Wouldn't take much to feel "sickened" I don't think.

Oh, in that sense yeah. I think he's just an emotional guy, and like I said he's getting up their in age, so he's probably frustrated that he still hasn't won a Cup in his entire career. You watch him up in the pressbox during games and he looks pissed off an uncomfortable.

I wonder if Murray offered to step down, and Melnyk simply asked him to stay on?

It sucks to see him lose everything because he could not get a crappy team to perform with AHL goaltending.

Assuming this article is accurate, this could be a very exciting trade deadline, draft and off-season.

We've all had our opinions on this, a lot of us thought around the beginning of December (I think), that there was something incredibly wrong with this picture. It's not just this year though - and we all know it. It started the instant the puck dropped on the Cup Finals vs Anaheim. I remember how amazingly frustrating a feeling it was to watch those games, knowing full well that Anaheim was bigger, faster and better and wondering secretly if we'd make it back. But of course we would, right? All those young piece, Spezza, Heatley, Alfie still plays like a 29 year old!

That didn't last long obviously and soon things started to grind to a halt with the Senators. Suddenly as other teams drafted elite young talent, the Sens were stuck in a position where they could never push Mike Fisher to 3rd line center by inserting a young phenom in the top 6, Karlsson seems to be 5 years too late - or right on time depending on which way you're looking at it. It's also time to admit that this team has a problem with goaltenders, no matter who, we seem to have bad luck.

Time to start fresh I guess, keep Michalek, Alfie (presumably), Spezza, Foligno, Regin, Karlsson + prospects and put a for sale sign on everyone else. Still don't see them moving Fisher, but we'll see I guess...

Muckler used to look pissed off, too. Every once in a while I'd get tickets to the Alcatel level-400 box which was right next to the one where Mucks sat. I think in his case he was pissed off because they would stop serving Ovaltine in the third, which is when he needed it most.
