The Sens will be looking for a bit of revenge after that 7-1 disaster where the Canes took no mercy on a team that was tired both physically and mentally from the tragedy in the Richardson family.

How have Sens been ranking in the number of powerplays given? I remember that last season they were not favoured so much. And even so, their PP was mighty lacking. Good to see something is working, surely a positive in a situation with a lot of negatives.

I concur with Clutch - Canes need to be sent a message from Sens.

An effort like the Pens game and we should be provided with a very solid and entertaining win vs. the Canes tonight.

GO SENS GO!!

This is actually a huge game for Ottawa. Not only would it put them in sole posession of 9th place, but 4 points behind 8th place, Montreal. And take a look at how poorly the habs are playing, and only halfway through a road trip from hell.....this is BIG

That said, it will be difficult despite the canes playing the night before. Sens only play lights out for one period, and if they wanna get back in the playoffs they need to be more consistent than that. Elliott needs to be big, but above all else, alfie fish kovalev need to really step the Cuss up in spezza's absence

I could see Kovalev stepping up while Spezza's out as he's capable of doing for short stretches. I think we held in remarkably well considering we were facing the best team in the East and the best player in the world. There's no way the Sens could be expected to dominate them for 60 minutes and a second period like the Pens had should have been expected after the first period the Sens put forward.

I guess we're super tight to the cap?

Does LTIR provide cap relief?

Yes, but only temporary.

Thanks. Hasn't happened though yet, right?

I would like to see the Senators play with the team and players they have now and not make any moves. Likely this team will be out of the playoffs and they can trade away players they feel have no part of the team going forward.

Stock up on youth and let the fun begin.

If Spezza goes on LTIR, his salary will still count, but LTIR allows the Sens without penalty to go over the salary cap by the amount of the injured players salary.

Instead of using Spezza's salary, here is a simpler example with a cap of $50 million and a team right on $50 million for salaries. If player A is making $1 million and goes on LTIR the club is allowed to replace player A with player B as long as player B's salary isn't over $1 million. Their payroll could now be $51 million and they won't be penalized. The thing that scares a lot of teams away from using the LTIR option is that when Player A comes back; the team needs to get back under the original $50 million cap which usually results in player movement.

Not that I have heard, but I don't really keep up to date with that kind of stuff.

Not that this should come as a surprise but Elliott gets the start in goal.

Of sorts. It allows you to spend OVER the cap, but it does not actually 'minus' the player's money from your cap. Common misconception.

Thanks for the good explanation. I can see that being a problem (getting under the cap) after the player returns. I guess if you know they are done for the year and you sign a FA to a 1-yr deal you are ok.

I love the CBA, so it is a pleasure to help explain it.

Your scenario of the player being injured for the year is a no brainer for GM's to use LTIR if they want to use "extra" salary to add a player.
