The San Jose Sharks have extended Captain Joe Thornton to a three year deal, worth $21M. Thornton will take a $200K discount from the $7.2M he is making this season.

A bit of a discount, I suppose, but he's still making more than Spezza, and I'm not entirely convinced he should be. Especially when you take into consideration the tax situation down there, versus up here.

He has an MVP to his name and cool nickname. All factor into contract negotiations....obviously. Sarcasm

Exactly the same cap hit starting next year.

Oops, for some stupid reason I thought Spezza was making $6.5M.

Already beaten to it, but yeah it's the same cap hit for Spezza. Thornton's produced more points than Spezza, but for the age difference, some could say Spezza's a better deal. All depends on Spezza being able to produce at a Thornton rate.

Yeah, for once I like the deal, the term is perfect for the Sharks and a little surprising he wouldn't want an 8 year, 6+ million.

We'll see how he does now that Heatley's legs are wearing down -- he'll be like Cheechoo, soon.

Heatley hasn't had injury problems like Cheechoo has. He will never end up like that bum.

Yeah, he'll wear down soon enough IMO.

"Jumbo Joe" is still one of the most ridiculous nicknames in all of sports.

I agree and am very pleased that Joe and the Sharks were able to draw up a straight-forward contract with a reasonable term.

There has to be a NTC/NMC involved somewhere.
