Well, whoever is running it, it needs to change.

What I'm saying is, maybe it *has*. It takes time to unlearn badly taught lessons. Maybe they tried to "fix it" by signing Kovalev, then Gonchar. But the problem is clearly not in the players on the ice -- as bass-ackwards as that may sound.

Seriously how could Butler be any worse than Kovalev?

Alfie knows how to play with Spezza but they need a finisher with them-Regin.

Michalek and Fisher are similar players and would be one hell of a second line with Foligno.

I think Kuba coming back will sort out the defence.

Is there any team that would take kovalev and his expiring contract?

Unlikely, but I like the sound of those first two lines.

My guess is that Kovalev will get a 20-game leash at least. They give him lots of opportunities and say he onl¥ has like 3 points at that point, then I think its realistic that he gets waived. What else are you supposed to do? Tricky stuff....it's comical that he imagined him and alfie getting their 1000 points at the same time.

I hate ripping on Kovalev, I really do. He's shown some signs of life but when nothing transpires, and we lose, there's only so much you can take.

Oh and our defense (overall) is HORRIBLE!

Sens are now 0-3 against their division, which is terrible. And the pens seemed to be coming around as well with 2 consecutive victories, and last night's 5-1 win in Philly being their best performance, they only seem to be getting better.

How do the sens get outworked and outhusled by a team and goalie that played the very night before in a different city? Can't fathom it, they should have brought their A-game last night. Teams are getting around our defense way too easily

Don't hate ripping Kovalev, it's our civic duty!

How about you make Gonchar the PP coach?

One thing I really miss is our team speed. Not sure what happened to it, either. Michalek is coming off ACL surgery, so he gets a pass for another couple of weeks. Kovalev was never fast to begin with. Karlsson -- I just can't understand it; he was one of our fastest skaters and now he can't keep up. Even Fisher is not winning as many races (blame that on Carrie). Back to D, Phillips never had blazing speed, so did he lose positioning all of a sudden? And I expected Campoli to be a little quicker now that his sports hernia is not an issue any more.

After scoring two *easy* goals by going high glove side on Price, they just stop shooting the puck?

Why do they keep thinking they can thread the needle by scoring on one-timers from the goal line on the powerplay? Malkin has a better shot and even *he* shoot from the circle. Sure, Spezza has scored a couple of lucky ones from behind the line, but those are the exception, rather than the rule.

There are too many things going wrong to turn around in one game. This is going to take a little time.

I'll ask again -- who knows for sure? It's not listed in the game notes, I've never heard it mentioned in any of Garrioch/Brennan/the other guy's columns. It's possible that, if Clouston is running it now, he has taken over from whoever did it before.

Here's a radical thought -- give the powerplay duties to Luke Richardson.

OK, there are 3 assistant coaches + Clouston.

One assistant coach coaches the defense - Luke Richardson.
One assistant coach coaches the forwards - Lauer/Carvel.
One assistant coach coaches the special teams - Lauer/Carvel.
And then you have Pattyson who's the video coach.

So between Lauer and Carvel, who's doing which one? I thought Carvel was coaching the special teams.

i refuse to panic. there's no denying we're having a bad start but we aren't much different a team from the one that surprised everyone last year.
i have noticed Alfie looks slower, kovalev is showing his usual slow beginnings self gonchar has yet to find his groove with the team but i think things will fall into places.

don't worry, it will be alright and we'll make the playoffs.

They are getting beaten to the outside on an alarming frequent basis. Not sure if it's positioning or conditioning. Karlsson has gotten quite slow, so I'll take conditioning for now. Bring back the stationary bikes; the underwater treadmills may help heal broken bones, but they aren't cutting it for speed. Probably because no-one can see just exactly what you're doing underwater.

That's right, we'll be fine.

I believe our lack of offense comes from our team defense. The defensemen still have to get used to their respective partners, as it still looks like there are fundamental mistakes down low in our own zone, and the forwards share the blame for an unreliable or inconsistent break out.

Although we have mobile defensemen who can move the puck much quicker now, which will eventually lead to more offense, there is probably a learning curve for just how much offensive/defensive pressure the Sens forwards can get away with. The absence of Volchenkov and Sutton changes the roles slightly for most of the individuals on the Sens, so I think they will continue to have some ups and downs for a while.

This team was successful last year because for long stretches they were the epitome of a hardworking NHL team. Seeing us struggle when the teamwork is off only makes sense to me and also gives me optimism that they'll figure it out and really get going in a few weeks.

Honestly, it's like no one remembers 2006-2007.

I remember 06-07, but mostly April through June Smile

When A-Train left the station Murray said that we've been blocking a lot of shots, and it would be nice to see the other teams block some of ours for a change. Well, they haven't had to block a lot to keep our shot count down. Buffalo blocked 20 shots against Ottawa, and that's the most of any other opponent we've faced to date. The next highest was 15 (Washington) and it goes down from there.

I understand that there's only been one game in which we out-blocked the opposition (the Smurfs) but we have been handily out-shot in all three division match ups (26-36 against Buffalo, 18-38 against Toronto, and 19-40 against Montreal).

I'm not sure that outshooting the jet-lagged Hurricanes or the not-so-defensively-minded Capitals is an accomplishment. The game against the Caps was our best overall effort.

Yes, the powerplay is alarming, as is the unwillingness to shoot *or* block shots. But it's the lack of effort against the Leafs and Habs that's really worrying. The Habs played the night before yet it was the Senators who wilted late in the game, with only 6 shots in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd!

Hearing what happened at the Wild practice makes we wonder when will Clouston follow suit?
