Trade one or both for rights to the D you want and go from there.

Yeah, that's one. How do you fit in the forward you want and also the D-man? I can't imagine a)we'd want to trade Kelly and b)even if we did, how many teams are lining up for a 2+ million dollar third line center?

Can't imagine trading Fisher with his whole NTC and stuff. Plus he's well paid, I'm not necessarily saying overpaid anymore, but he's handsomely paid. I'd rather a different player for that 4.2 - a skilled guy for example, and let a guy like Z.Smith check the heck out of opponents. Might be a tough sell.

Kuba? You could, but you're down one massive, minute munching D-man.

Leclaire? The market is hell for good goalies, imagine a habitually injured, not yet proven one?

I don't know, it's gonna be interesting to see how Murray handles this. I *think* it might be feasible to sign Cullen and Michalek, but I just don't see where the money becomes available personally.

As long as Murray grabs a defenceman I'm happy.

Cullen is a nice piece, but I'm confident that Spezza, Alfredsson, Michalek, Fisher, Regin, Kovalev and RKN will be fine as our top-nine (without even counting a potential rebound season for Foligno and the emergence of Wick/Butler/Smith)

I honestly think Butler hits the 20 goal mark his first year. From the sounds of things he's head and shoulders better then everyone at development camp and he's a fantastic skater.

Cullen is a nice piece though and just fits perfectly in Ottawa... that's actually a guy you can put on any line and be 100% confident he does his job. He obviously isnt a legit top 3 forward but finding guys that can play every position and on every special team can be just as valuable.

Throw in Shannon, as well.

Something like that. I think a Lee for Cogliano deal is pretty logical in a lot of ways for both teams.

BUYOUTS
Cheechoo, Jonathan »$666,667$1,166,667
Alfredsson, Daniel »$700,000$700,000
Emery, Ray »$562,500$562,500

Goodness, that messes things up for us a bit.

It says we have $9,359,166 in cap space to sign our RFAs and some of our UFAs Cullen/Sutton.

The more I think of it the more I'd rather have a Gonchar than a Sutton. One can dream... Sens on July 1st, Free Agents, Trades - Interesting storylines to watch. - Page 5 542150

CapGeek's current configuration for the Sens has Cowen and Butler on the roster -- that's 11 forwards and 6 D. Drop those two (both 2-way), and our cap space is actually closer to about $11.5 mil.

We've got 4 RFAs to re-sign: Winchester, Campoli, Foligno, and Regin. I imagine that it will cost a little over $4 mil to get done.

By my count, that leaves $7+ mil to play with, or $6+ mil if you're playing it safe (injuries, call ups, etc.). Factor in that that also leaves us with 13 forwards and 7 D, and with no Cowen or Butler or Wick in the line up, and I'd say you pretty much have to expect us to move a little salary before long.

Our cap situation is actually pretty good right now. It will be even better in 2011-12. Phillips is really the only UFA of consequence for us that year, along with Elliott, I guess. Kovalev and Leclaire, too, but they have to do a lot to earn a return to the Sens.

I would say closer to 6.

The Sens are fine in regards to the cap, I dont know why people care all that much honestly... well at least one guy. Anyways, I think you see an absolute insane year from Leclaire coming up, if he stays healthy (big if, I know) he could very easily be a top 5 goaltender in The NHL. I dont think people appriciate what he did in the playoffs, it was actually a lot more special then people might realize.

I've posted what I would like as a roster on the cap thread.

Big Ev wrote:Why is Alfredsson on buyouts?

We had to terminate his previous contract and then do a new one. Not sure how they slipped that through the NHL without waiving him etc. Must be a consensual way of terminating a contract in order to make another one. I haven't seen many like it since. One of the most complicated transactions in the history of the NHL.

Alfie had three option years on his old deal (and option years are no longer allowed in the NHL). The Sens paid $2.1 mil total, or $700K for each year of the buy-out, to compensate Alfie for those option years. That's why Alfie's cap hit is one number for the first three years of the deal ($5.575), and another number for the final one ($4.875).

If you go back to the thread that announces Alfie's re-signing, I go over this in detail. It was a really curious case.

N4L wrote:Gonchar being here would take so much pressure off the young D in Ottawa for a few years, almost invaluable.

4 years? 5 million per year minimum? That's a lot of $$ and term for what will be a 40 year old.

4 years should be a cap hit of no more than 3.5 million. It's likely that you will have that cap hit for at least a season without a player to go with it.

That's pretty tantalizing, honestly. Gonchar has a few good years left, for sure.

i honestly hope you're right. that would be sweet!

i just want to see if he makes the team. then sticks with the team. then becomes something of a top 6 forward.

Yeah I think I might go and read over that thread again at some point.

Gonchar gets 4.5 X 4 minimum, I think more like 5. A team will take a chance that he'll still be good/playing at 40 or whatever it is.

I also like the idea of Paul Kariya, although it sounds like he's staying West.

Sens on July 1st, Free Agents, Trades - Interesting storylines to watch. - Page 5 270956 I remember last year when I was waiting all day for Heatley to accept the trade to Edmonton.....and that Neil had re-signed for 4 more years when I was prepared to part ways with him.

......Imagine if Volchenkov comes back.....would ppl now be opposed to such a notion? Say he accepts that long term $4M cap hit contract?
