By trade I think. If we lose out on Cullen, we need to make a smart hockey trade for a top line forward, not top 6, top line. I really don't want to lose out on Cullen though.

Plus, Kovalev with Spezza is something I'm a strong supporter of. Kovalev is primed to have a great season (I hope).

Kovalev with Spezza or upgraded second line Center... Either way.

I would day trying to grab Cogliano from Edmonton if The Sens lose out on Cullen would be a pretty solid move.

Meh, I feel we have enough guys coming up that are similar to Cogliano, no?

I don't think we have a forward prospect that has his speed or playmaking abilities, yet.

Regin? Take away the speed, but we have to give Regin, Butler, Wick, Petersson, Silf etc. a shot soon. I don't mind that little dude Cogliano, but I have to wonder if it's totally necessary at this point.

Oh well I wasn't thinking about Regin, he's graduated as a guy who's "coming up", in my mind at least.

But Cogs is "there" already. If we lose Cullen he's replaced by Shannon. Plus we have Kovalev and Michalek coming back from *serious* injuries. How many of these will have a drop off in production from last year: Kovalev, Michalek, Fisher, Kelly, Neil? Hopefully some will improve on their totals, but our forward depth is not good.

Our depth is good, our skill is minimal. That's the issue.

I think the closest number I can get is 7.5 million to spend on July 1.

That's without Shannon's 600K, Lee's 0.9, Z.Smith on the 4th line and the RFAs all getting 1.2 or lower.

That's also without an injury retainer, so we have to factor that in. So we're probably down to about 5 million exactly that we can spend.

But then we haven't gotten rid of Shannon or Lee yet, so that takes us down to 3.6 ish million. Murray will know though that he'll get rid of Shannon and Lee, so he'll probably just keep it at 5.

By doing it like that and having Michalek sign for 4 (to over compensate...unless I'm way off), we'd have 1 million dollars to use.

Damn and I want Cullen, I wish we could find a way.

Lots of ways to do it. Murray just has to be aggressive and make it happen.

Okay, how would you do it? And you have to also get rid of Shannon and Lee in the process.

Trade one or both for rights to the D you want and go from there.

We have enough potential 2nd line centers with 3 years in The NHL under their belt? He's been awful in Edmonton because he has no one to play with.

If you can trade Lee for Cogliano you do it.

Yeah, that's one. How do you fit in the forward you want and also the D-man? I can't imagine a)we'd want to trade Kelly and b)even if we did, how many teams are lining up for a 2+ million dollar third line center?

Can't imagine trading Fisher with his whole NTC and stuff. Plus he's well paid, I'm not necessarily saying overpaid anymore, but he's handsomely paid. I'd rather a different player for that 4.2 - a skilled guy for example, and let a guy like Z.Smith check the heck out of opponents. Might be a tough sell.

Kuba? You could, but you're down one massive, minute munching D-man.

Leclaire? The market is hell for good goalies, imagine a habitually injured, not yet proven one?

I don't know, it's gonna be interesting to see how Murray handles this. I *think* it might be feasible to sign Cullen and Michalek, but I just don't see where the money becomes available personally.

As long as Murray grabs a defenceman I'm happy.

Cullen is a nice piece, but I'm confident that Spezza, Alfredsson, Michalek, Fisher, Regin, Kovalev and RKN will be fine as our top-nine (without even counting a potential rebound season for Foligno and the emergence of Wick/Butler/Smith)

I honestly think Butler hits the 20 goal mark his first year. From the sounds of things he's head and shoulders better then everyone at development camp and he's a fantastic skater.

Cullen is a nice piece though and just fits perfectly in Ottawa... that's actually a guy you can put on any line and be 100% confident he does his job. He obviously isnt a legit top 3 forward but finding guys that can play every position and on every special team can be just as valuable.
