Im not going to get into the Fisher thing, he's a solid player and a key piece in Ottawa, but people shouldnt pretend Kovalev didnt have an enormous impact on Fisher's career year. They played well together.

Yeah, Wick had 70 points including 30+ goals in the WHL at 19/20.

Not only that but he's 6'1" and close to 200 pounds now from what some people are saying.

No doubt about it. That's not even an issue.

ex: Butler, Wick, Winchester, Smith, Shannon, Cheechoo, Foligno

2 spots for 7 guys? You can probably take Cheechoo out of the running, but every other guy there has a real shot. I would probably go with Foligno, Winchester, Shannon/Smith and let the other guys get a year of seasoning.

Cheechoo and Winchester have no shot. They can barely skate, AHL material IMO.
Wick has pro level experience over Butler, I just don't want to rush this kid into the NHL ,give him a couple of months to learn the pro style in Binghamton , dominate the league and go from there.
Shannon is a fringe NHL-er, he's a great guy but he doesn't belong in the league.
So Wick , Z.Smith and Foligno for the final spots. Two regulars and an extra guy. I just don't see Murray re-signing Cullen(just a hunch) so that's 3 regulars

Regin - Spezza - Wick
Foligno - Fisher - Alfie
Michalek - Z.Smith - Kovalev
Ruutu - Kelly - Neil

Ummm what?

Just because Winnie isn't a star player doesn't mean he's AHL material. He played his limited role very well last year. Cheechoo, yeah I agree and he likely won't be in the NHL again.

When did Wick have pro-level experience? If you're referring to him playing in Europe then I'd probably argue that playing college is comparable in terms of playing in pressure situations, etc. Not to mention the fact that Wick is showing signs of immaturity by holding out on this contract while Butler is coming in a lot younger and ready to work; not to mention he was a Hobey Baker nominee. In the two-three games he played Butler showed he's capable of playing in the NHL. An off-season of training will go along way for this guy. He chose to sign with Ottawa versus a lot of other teams because there's a belief that this guy could make the NHL next year.

And really? Wick on your first line? What are you smoking cus I want some of whatever it is.... You've seen Wick play in what, four olympic games on a defense-oriented, low scoring team and you want him on your top line? If anything Wick plays on the third line or in a shutdown role.

Dude, I know you're new to the site and everything which is awesome (welcome by the way), but as a tip you should research what you say. There's guys on this forum who feed on posts like this...

Well said.

As for Wick being on the first line... ummmm that would be based on what? The fact it's taken him 6 years to sign his first NHL deal? What puts him ahead of Butler, Foligno, and Winchester? Hell, what puts him ahead of Greening or Hoffman? Ummm, just about nothing.

This guy who originally posted this might want to rethink some things he's saying because this site isnt jammed with idiots like HB or HF, people here actually have a clue.

He's kind of Rambo-ish. Only much taller.

I'm still not against trading him if the right offer came back

Yeah, again, I hope the guy comes here and tears it up, why wouldnt people want that? Fact of the matter is there is no reason to think he is anything more then a fringe NHLer, maybe not even an NHLer. He's going to get every chance to make the team out of camp but to say or even suggest he's going to be a top line player is reaching to say the least.

Haha, well point is they both had pretty good season's and Fisher finally had a good winger to play with for an extended period of time. You cant deny Fisher had a good year and was very clutch throughout the season... Kovalev should get credit for Fisher's season as well.

Right. Yet only one is getting run out of town. Personally, it bothers me.

It's all opinion though, I can understand Tobias wanting Wick to succeed - of course he should too. It's not gonna be quite that easy for Wick, but who knows.

I would say with that frame and previous NA success that he'll be quite like Regin and tear up Bingo for a while, then get the call - probably permanently.

Or he'll suck. Laugh1 Again, who knows. But this is like finding yet another 2nd round pick laying on the ground. Even if he was Sens property before, no one thought he'd every actually sign with the organization.

I dont agree with Kovalev being run out of town, he picked his game up and was huge when everyone went down. He was a big reason for the season's turn around. He has one year left on his deal and he wants to play and be here, he's also well liked in the room.

That's because Murray is doing his job and doing it well. I dont know if you can compare him to a 2nd round pick though because it's one shot to make the team for Wick, that's it. He isnt going to go down to The AHL and take a pay cut, a 2nd round pick would.

He's a really misunderstood player. I think he loves game because to him, it's fun, and it's just pond hockey for him because he's so good.

He's just so good that playing in the NHL is just like being a kid at an outdoor rink for him and he has a hard time taking it seriously, I guess.

Oh Diddle that, he's not gonna make it then. He can't 'expect' a spot on an NHL team right away. Get lost. Laugh1

As for Kovalev, Regin wouldn't be where he is without Kovalev and for sure Fisher wouldn't have been as good.

Kovalev might make the best coach in a couple of years. What he does in terms of making the young guns feel at home is amazing.

Wick will get every shot to make the team, but why would he stay in NA for a serious pay cut removed from a really great sitution in The Swiz for Bingo?

Where would I rather be? In The Alps making really good money, at home, and really happy. Or in Binghamption, NY making a lot less money with a bunch of hicks? It's a no brainer.

Fans for the most part are pretty simple. The same ones that say "Spezza is the future captain" are the same ones that say "Kovalev is worthless and cant play the game anymore". Kovalev is a good player, will get you 20-25 goals and 50 points, and makes players around him better. Oh ya, he's money in the playoffs.

I think Wick should only accept a deal conditional upon the immediate transfer of the AHL franchise to the booming Metropolis of Cornwall, Ontario.

Then everybody's happy. Ottawa Senators off-season talk - Page 45 226479
