You can never have too many Spezzas.

I meant if you're replacing Spezza...you're just getting another injury-prone, play-making centre. I know Brassard has skills and intangible, but the risk of injury is high with him.

Ummmm again, he's been injured once seriously, that's it. He played 79 games, I think Spezza did that once in 7 years.

It's not just the shoulder injury, he had nagging injuries like Spezza in the past, and I think he missed a lot of 1 year in junior due to injury.

Also, if you have fluke injuries, you can still be called injury-prone. The fluke injuries just seem to occur to you, like Lecalire lol.

Edit: Yeah, he dislocated his shoulder in 2006, had shoulder surgery last year, had a couple of hand injuries last year as well.

In the last bit he's been healthy. Not going to talk about him being injured in Jr. He played a full season this year and was O.K on a team that was in shambles and playing on a 2nd line with next to no one. I would hardly call him injury prone based on an injury he got in a scrap.

Anyways, this would be the only trade I would see somewhat fair value coming back with the potential to be an absolute steal in the end. Gives The Sens options as well.

That would be a nagging injury, not injury prone. That's a big difference. I have an awful shoulder that needs surgery, it pops in and out and that's all that happend. This cost him a year of development as well.

I still like Brassard and Niederreiter and cap space better than Spezza. Specially with big dollars coming Karlsson's way. Brassard will still have 2 years left on his deal once Karlsson is up for renewal.

Naw, enough D in Ottawa already plus you could go out and get something better IMO if that was a need.

Anyways, this was just all my opinions on things. You can hardly call Brassard injury prone though, waaaaay too early to even suggest that even it that is the case.

I meant with Kuba going the other way. Tyutin is cheaper.

Any Roman Wick updates?

I dont think cap space should be a consideration in trading Spezza. The salary he makes for sure, but not the actual hit on the cap, IF that makes any sense at all.

I'd try to put a package together to get either Weber or Suter with Weber being my first preference.

I don't think we could put the necessary package together. Maybe for Suter if we gave up way more than we were comfortable with.

They could use Spezza, but he's not as good a forward as Weber is a defenceman, and Spezza's older and quite a bit more expensive (which they can't handle). Our most valuable asset is Karlsson, but you could not be trading with a team that needs him less given they have Weber, Suter, Hamhuis and Franson on the team and guys like Blum, Ellis and Josi in the system.

And, I'm not sure Spezza + Karlsson for Weber would actually make us that much better. We'd be largely incapable of scoring with an incredibly limited offence future-wise. It would turn us into Nashville with more questionable goaltending and less depth on the blue-line, IMO.

I'm not sure if this interview with Melnyk has been posted anywhere yet:

Sens owner talks Spezza's future

“I think we have to tinker a little bit,” Melnyk said from his Barbados home. “I have a meeting with Bryan next week about how we’re going to accomplish that with things that are going to be difficult to get done under the (salary) cap.”

During the wide-ranging, 15-minute discussion, Melnyk said he isn’t sure what the future holds for No. 1 centre Jason Spezza, who had a poor playoffs and whose no-movement clause kicks in on July 1.

Asked if the club was going to spend another summer trying to trade a star — after the Dany Heatley saga of 2009 — Melnyk put the ball in Murray’s court. Spezza has five years left on a contract carrying a cap hit of $7 million per season.

“That’s going to be Bryan’s decision. There’s a little bit of misconception about how hands-on I am. I keep myself knowledgeable,” said Melnyk. “But at the end of the day, the people that I hire make the decisions because they’re accountable ... and it’s their responsibility.

“Do we talk about it? Do I want to understand what is the rationale behind it? Absolutely. That to me is important to know the logic behind any transaction. It’s their decision to make. If they came to me, ‘We want to do this or that,’ then I’ll ask all the hard questions. But ... it’s their decision and I don’t think I’ve ever overruled a decision.”

Melnyk confirmed he’ll spend to the salary cap, which is expected to rise slightly from $56.7 million this season. But that doesn’t mean the Senators, who already have $49 million committed to 17 players, will be able to keep everybody they want — especially looming unrestricted free agent Anton Volchenkov.

The blueliner rejected a five-year, $20-million deal offered before the Olympics. It’s believed Volchenkov is seeking $4.5-$5 million per season — a contract the Senators likely can’t afford.

“We’ll continue to talk with him, but under the cap system it’s going to be difficult to sign him,” said Melnyk. “The same goes with (Matt) Cullen. It’s all one big puzzle. I’m sure Bryan, with his experience and his scouting staff, will be able to sort it out.”

The bidding would have to start with Regin, Karlsson, Cowen, Wiercioch, Spezza, Alfie and our next dozen 1st rounders.

Trading for a stud blueliner doesn't make sense to me. With a little patience we'll have quite possibly grown our own in the next few years. If we are looking to make a shakeup, by trading Spezza, it's critical, as you said, to replace the missing offence. As much as I would love to have Weber, in a few short years, our blueline could be the envy of the league.
