It seems there's a lot of talk on the site about the merits of moving Spezza, Kuba, Foligno and to a much lesser extent Lee.

So if you were Brian Murray, and could find a suitable trade partner, would you trade Spezza, Foligno, Kuba and Brian Lee all in one shot? What would you expect to get back in such a deal? Would you do it before you could secure the services of one or both of Cullen and Sutton?

I personally would trade them but it would only be under certain circumstances. Now these names are just for example purposes.

First I would need a commitment from Cullen on a signed contract in the 3 to 3.25 range.

Second I would want a player of the Horton ilk (I realize some question his character so lets just say a Horton without the baggage).

Third I'd want to move up the draft and comfortably into the top 10.

Fourth I'd want a promising young prospect who could step in this season.

Fifth I'd want a veteran top 4 D man.

I think that teams that hold a top 10 pick would rather have a young player with a lot of upside and who will cost them significantly less than a $7M player.

Kuba has little value because he missed too much time due to injury. Brian Lee has not done anything to warrant a high return.

Foligno I would not give up on.

Packaging all 4 of Spezza, Foligno, Lee and Kuba is a total of ~ $12.575 (Foligno @ $1M). That's a lot of money to be dealing in a package and the Senators would most likely be taking as much back.

If you add a bit more, like maybe OTT 1st in 2011, you should be able to get Horton and Ballard in that deal and be able to swap 1sts with FLA, IMO.

So Horton Ballard, swap 1st rounders, and a prospect for that package?

The thing is, FLA is getting the 3rd overall this year. It's tough to put a tag on that. If you leave that first out you're overpaying for Horton and Ballard, obviously. Maybe FLA just isn't the best trade partner for a homerun deal like that?

ya the third is a bit high for that trade... plus i dont thin FLA wants our garbage.

what are we saying:
Lee, foligno, Spezza, Kuba and a 1st

for

Ballard, Horton and a 1st

do i have that right

I'd hardly call Spezza, Foligno, Kuba and our first garbage. Lee? Yes he is garbage.

Interesting. I don't think Florida would do that. The only team desperate enough to make a trade like this would be the Oilers, but there is no way they give up their pick in this year's draft.

I can realistically see Spezza and Lee to Columbus for their 1st (4th overall), Filatov, and Umburger. Foligno for a one-for-one (similar to Pouliot trade; maybe for a Gagner or Cogliano), and Kuba for a prospect and draft pick. Kuba could be interesting though. You could probably trade him and rights to Volchenkov to Washington for Alzner and a 2nd. I would do that in a heartbeat.

But yeah, all players in one trade won't happen.

Well, Sens fans seem pretty happy to get rid of a $7M underachieving, defensively inept, turn over King in Spezza and fans are ready to give up on Foligno back after only 3 years in the league for not living up to his "potential". And Kuba's hardly a top 4 d-man, but he is paid like one.

When you talk about your own players like they are "garbage" why should other teams think differently?

exactly how i meant it... the only part of that deal FLA gets the advantage is the Spezza-Horton part.. everyother part is in Ottawa favour.

I would love Horton in Ottawa, but he's got a lot of value. He's still under contract for a few more years at about $4M, and even though he may not be happy in Florida, there are better offers out there than what I see above.

Trading a question in Spezza for a bigger question in Horton isnt the way to go. I like Horton, I think he would be a good piece here in Ottawa, but no way do you do it at the expense of Spezza. Like I said, in this case, Ill go with the devil I know.

You trade Spezza and this team is in trouble for the next 5 years

Everyone is in love with Regin because of what he did in the playoffs right, take a look and see who got the 1st assist on every one of his goals.

Spezza alone gets you a top 5 pick, good prospect and roster player.

If not, run the other way.

This is just getting ridiculous.

Trading Spezza sounds like a great idea-until it happens, and then we are all wondering what happened to our offence, and why the young guys aren't scoring.

Imagine if Calgary had a 1st rounder to give up?

I think CBJ is an interesting possibility too. When you consider that Brassard is yet unproven and still makes a good chunk of change:

Spezza, Kuba, 1st for

Brassard, Tyutin, 1st
