Karlsson has 2 years remaining on his ELC and most likely 5 years before his jackpot contract (last year of RFA plus some UFA years). He won't be 6M on his next deal unless Doughty, Bogosian, etc.. hit the motherlode in their 2nd contracts.

oh ok.. so 5 more years before he gets the big one... campbell's contract will be decent by then... I still want to know if he's that much better than Kuba.

If I was Murray, I'd target some of their depth up front or at the very least some of their RFAs.

I'd go after guys like Versteeg, Ladd, Hjalmarsson, Beach, Aliu, Skille.

I'd probably do something like Foligno + Lee for Versteeg
or Foligno + Lee for Ladd + Skille/Beach

If Ottawa WANTS Campbell they will have to make a deal that works for Chicago. And what would work best for them would be a few decent players on cheap deals.
Don't believe that for a minute. Chicago has screwed itself and will be losing players. Nobody will take Huet, there very well could be another suitor for Campbell, but I don't really see another fit in the league. They could move some 3M contracts but at best that's a 2M saving per roster spot. Put yourself in Scotty's Stan's position, what would you do to lower your cap hit by the approximately 8M necessary ?

Trading Campbell for a package of Kuba, Shannon and Lee would be a good start. You suddenly have a roster of 16 and you're, at least, under the cap.
I would be shocked if Chicago could get anywhere close to that for Campbell.

Also, Niemi and Hjalmarsson are due raises on their current deals and at least Hjalmarsson will command a substantial increase. They also have Ladd to resign or let go and his Qualifying offer will be at leaset 1.6M, not to mention he has arb rights coming off a 17G 21A season.

Other than Versteeg the other players listed are exaclty the type Chicago needs to keep to maintain their top end salary structure.

Almost all happen to be RFAs too. It's gonna be hard to keep them if offer sheets start coming in left, right and center.

There aren't a lot of GMs that like to play the offer sheet game. I'd bet Ladd elects to go to arbitration and the minor league players accept their QOs. The big question in my mind is Hjalmarsson, I see him getting 2 or 3 years at about 1.25M.

Does anyone feel that Murry should really concider trying to steel Joe Pavelski or Devin Setoguchi from the Sharks since both are going to be a RFA's this summer? It would be a better sweet win for the Sens since we got scowed on the Heatley deal, I think. Would you trade these guys all in one package? - Page 13 226479 Any thought?

The thing with offer sheets is that once you lift the lid off that pot, you are opening up a huge can of worms cause karma is a Wing Dang Doodle.

You do that to SJ or any team and the likelihood they come back in a few years and do the same to Kalrsson, Cowen, Wiercioch, Lehner, etc. is very likely.

Remember when Vancouver went after Backes and then STL went after Bernier?

Philly took a run at Kesler too.

And Edmonton's gone after two teams players (Buffalo and Anaheim). They better hope Eberle and MPS never see the RFA market.

Ottawa's one and only offer sheet was made to Ron Tugnutt, then property of the Washington Capitals, back in July 10th of 1996. The offer was accepted and because the contract was less than $400K there was no compensation sent to Washington.

Would you give up a first rd pick for eather Pavelski or Setoguchi when they are both going to be RFA's knowing that they will better your team down the rd and replace larger contract like Fisher?

I don't understand why Gm's get so pissy when they loose there player's that they want for next season ,that happen to be RFA's .Every GM know that there is a dead line to get your player's undercontract ,So if you decided to dance around your roster with your finger up your Donkey,You deserve too loose your player's (Case and point Dustin Penner) ANA had all the time in the world to get Penner under contract but they decided to wait too the last minute on what they wanted to do with him and lost out to EDM. I'd pass on him purely from a contract stand point. 7.1 million for 6 more years at which time he is going to be 35 or so. Short term he is a good fit but long term we get bogged down. Will he still be preforming well in a couple of years time is my biggest worry. If he is hard to move now can you imagine in a couple of years if he goes on the decline. I'd be curious to see what other options are available first. Clearly its a very high risk vs reward scenario.

Why does no one ever comment on Gonchar? He won't be asking for more than Campbell and he's just as good (better IMO).

Gonchar is worrisome due to age and possibly declining skills.
