I'm more and more open to the idea of Campbell in Ottawa. He'd be a damn good fit beside Phillips, and if we could get rid of some big contracts the other way then I'd be down.

As far as Price vs Halak, I still think Price will be better given the opprtunity out of the Montreal spotlight and a bit more seasoning. There's no question Halak is better now (heck he's a top 10 tender right now) but I still trust in Price's potential long-term.

THe way Halak is performing, You don't even need more than that and he's been performing like that 2 years in a row now.
Price could become a better goaltender one day, well may be, but I don't see how he can do more than what Halak is doing, and it's not even a sure thing.
Baring a huge trade, tHeir cap space won't allow them to keep both, so why trade Halak, the sure thing now and for the future?

Don't disagree with you. They should trade Price, and I think it'll work out better for Price than anyone. I was just stating what I think Price's potential is and what Halak's is.

I've always thought he was the better goalie and I couldn't believe a team offered him an offer sheet last two years ago. I said Ottawa should have done so, even if it meant Montreal matching and being forced to pay more than $750/year.

If I had the time and energy, I would go back to the post where I suggested Ottawa throw an offer sheet at Halak.

I wish I could find what I said too. He re-signed July 9 2008, I can't find any posts in the Montreal section or General Hockey section that go that far back.

You really need to learn how to do a site-specific google search (add "site:gmhockey.com" to the google search keywords):

The way Plekanec has played you can't get rid of him. I know Gomez is being paid like the number one guy, but other than Cammy, Plekanec is their most important forward. That would be a huge mistake by them, imo.

Granted if he's looking for a giant contract I don't see how MontreL can match that either. That will definitely be an interesting situation moving forward.

I found this one, but there were other posts from when Halak was an RFA and no one knew what to do. I remember thinking that the idea would be that Montreal might not match a 1.2 offer sheet (per year) because they couldn't trade Halak for a full year. But I couldn't find any of that, just this.

I don't know, but I remember when the Habs hadn't signed him, there were a few of us here trumpeting for the Sens to make a 1.2 million a year offer sheet to him X 2 years. That way the Habs probably wouldn't have matched because you can't trade a guy who you match for one year.

I thought that was the right thing to do back then, political correctness be damned, but...we didn't and we have a guy who's arguable better in Leclaire, so I guess it all worked out.

My point there specifically was that we had our chance at Halak and now we don't really need him. Besides, Halak wants to be a starter - and we have a starter already.

Right?

HA! I remember those days... ahhh to think what could have been eh? But Murray doesn't seem like the offer sheet type of guy.

There, the Habs get there lone win of the series. These afternoon games are crappy for the playoffs, they throw people off their game.

There's this
SpezzDispenser wrote:Remember when we suggested that Murray send an offer sheet to Halak for 1.5 million? I realize that's double of what he cost the Habs, but it was a strong move at the time.

Halak's a great goalie NOW, behind a good goalie.

Then Hemlock's reply:
Hemlock wrote:Hahaha, I remember you, myself and others talking about just that on HB. The logic was perfect in that they'd get to this past July 1 with a dozen or more free agents, and if they'd retained Halak, they would have less to spend. It was very devious I remember. It was all about pitchforking Gainey. cool)

So maybe the discussion was on HB.

Wasnt the right move then, isnt the right move now. No point in throwing a division rival a grenade because there would be one coming back at ya at some point.

As for what DD said about Foligno, I dont see any place for Foligno in the lineup is Cullen is resigned. He didnt have a good season, he is a RFA with no arbitration rights and I doubt he gets much more then the required raise.

Based what on Murray said it looks like he will make a run at Campbell as well. His salary is big but he could also be had for nothing and in all honesty, a player like him in The East will be a lot more effective then in The West.

Kuba, Foligno for Campbell and Chicago's 1st.

Draft is before Kuba's NTC kicks out, so probably won't work.
Here's what I would do in OTT: Re-sign Sutton for 3-ish, make a run at Hamuis for 4M-ish, trade Volchie's rights for a 3rd rounder to move maybe 3 spots in the draft and trade Kuba after July 1st for cap space.

Philips/Hamuis: shut-down and very mobile
Sutton/Karlsson
Campoli/Carkner
Lee.

Meh, the NTC is over and done with, only reason it is still in effect is because of July 1. YOu basically tell him he's going to Chicago after July 1st anyways and he will basically have to accept. That NTC isnt a big hurdle unless he loves Ottawa so much he wants an extra week here.

I really do think Campbell and Ottawa are a perfect fit. He's fast, skilled, and Ottawa is lacking a true PP QB on the point. I love Karlsson as much as anyone but it's unfair to rest your teams PP and offense on a 20 year old kid. Campbell takes the pressure off while playing 23, 24 mins a night. Lets not pretend this wouldnt be doing Chicago a favour and there has to be a 1st or 2nd rounder coming back with perhaps something else.

Campbell will give The Sens a dimension of speed on the back end they basically have never had.

Agree and agree. I think Campbell is the perfect D man in Ottawa right now to play along side Karlsson, not so much Phillips, that's just me though. I get they are both offensive guys but I like the idea of those two moving the puck together. I think Phillips needs to be with a RH shot and a big body.

I think Price will be a star somewhere else for sure, wont happen in mtl though.

I'm all for getting Campbell, but why would they also give their 1st round pick? Isn't Kuba and Foligno enough?

It was Chicago's 1st coming to Ottawa in that proposed scenario.

You are taking a contract no one else in The NHL will, that's why. If you think Murray isnt going to exploit that situation, you're wrong. There will be some sort of prospect or pick coming back with Campbell, garenteed. That's if Murray actually gets him and by the sounds of it he is looking for a stud puck mover... well that's Campbell.

I wouldn't call him a stud, but I would gladly take him. That deal you suggested would be a good one.
