What if Sutton looks great and wants a 2 million dollar deal?

That's a lot for a 3rd pairing guy, but if he's worth it, I'd do it and just move Campoli at the draft.

By "look great" I mean as good as Volchenkov.

Can someone of sound mind explain why Sutter traded Dustin Boyd away for a 4th?

I dunno, I would think about letting A-Train walk, but the time to do that would have been today so we could get something for him. Rip the bandaid off. But...while this is an interesting train of thought, the A-Train replacement for less, there is a loyalty that should go both ways. 3.8-4 million is offered and I'm sure I'd take that deal, just like I feel A-Train should be inclined to take that deal if that's what Murray is offering. I don't wanna spend more than 3.5 on a defensive D-man, but I will because it's a long-standing, talented member of the Sens, I feel the same should be reciprocated by Volchenkov.

But, as Devo would point out, that's not the way it works I guess.

Wow, Ottawa now has arguably the top 2 defensive defensemen in the league:

If we get Volchenkov signed in the 3.75 range then I say keep him. If he doesn't accept that then he can be replaced fairly easy. Some of the potential UFAs have already been discussed and that 3.75 can be used on them. Hamhuis is the one I want the most, he is well rounded and would make an excellent addition to the back end. If you look at what we have in the back moving into next year it isn't really that bad.

Phillips, Karlsson, Kuba and Carkner are already signed next year. Campoli shouldn't cost more than 1M even if he goes to arbitration. Cowen will be given every chance to make the team and a UFA like Hamhuis at 3.5M would round out a very balanced 7 man group.

That's 15M on a very balanced solid D corps. Weircioch can develop in Bingo and replace Campoli the following year, Phillips gets resigned at the same money he is making now and we are still at 15M for the following season. The ELCs are in consecutive years so we are in control of the D for the foreseeable future.

Of course getting Volchenkov signed eliminates the need to shop for D in July.

3.75 over 5 or 6 years would be fair IMO. He would obviously leave a little on the table by taking that but Murray has to show the loyalty by giving him some term as well. Hopefully that happens, if not well, there are a ton of options.

Next years team defently looks good and Bingo will get shot of youth and tallent next year in all likelyhood. Lehner, Hoffman, Weircoich, Lee (haha), Cowick, and Cheechoo might still be there if he isnt bought out.

As for this year, I think The Sens have a round or two in them for sure, with some luck in one form or another, could surprise even themselves. There is depth at every position, a ton of chracter, a ton of leadership, a seemingly healthy and motivated Spezza, a great coach, very happy with how this team has been put together.

What Sutton said was interesting and when you look at his career, it's true, he ALWAYS plays on an expansion team and NYI might as well have been one. He really has never had a shot on a decent team to show his worth. Interested to see how he fits in here because I think it could be something that no one expected. The only thing we have on the back end now is toughness and grit. Im not completely sold on it but I defently like it more then I did in Sept to Dec.

Willie Mitchell might be out for the year and his career could be effected at this point. The guy everyone wants and rightfully so is Hamius.

Other then that Seidenberg and Sutton are two guys that can fill that shot blocker role who wont cost a ton. All that said, Having A Train is better then not having him but only at a certain cost.

I like the deals but I hope murray is able to resign at least one of them to a 1 year extension at a little less.

Seriously, if that's all that it took, I wish Ottawa would have taken that deal.

No kidding. To basically discard him for a mid rounder makes no sense. Even having enough forwards, I certainly would have considered it. He's never really got the opportunity he should have in Calgary with the likes of Moss, Bourque, and Glencross.

According to various sources we're set at that position.

You are correct. We should have picked up Boyd, he would have pushed... TRADE DEADLINE BONANZA! - Page 56 159628 ...no one out of the lineup.

Looking at next year's cap, it would appear to be either Kelly or Cullen but not both.
