GAME DAY: Calgary Flames @ Ottawa Senators - 7:30 PM Tuesday, Feb. 9 2010
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear Clutchie
Happy birthday to you
Yes, yes, it (Tuesday) is the annual celebration of the date that our beloved co-founder escaped from that ovarian Bastille. And I could not think of a better present than to star another winning streak.
Ottawa (33-22-4, 2nd in the Northeast and 5th in the Eastern Conference) hosts Calgary (29-21-9, 3rd in the Northwest and 7th in the Western Conference) Tuesday night at SBP. The Sens come home after having their franchise-record-setting winning streak stopped at 11 games by the cross-province rivals.
Calgary has attempted to shake the team out of its doldrums by executing a seven player trade, sending Dion Phaneuf to Toronto, then following up by sending Olli Jokinen to the Rangers. The list of ex-Flames also includes Fredrik Sjostrom, Brandon Prust and prospect Keith Aulie. In return the Flames received Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Ian White, Jamal Mayers, Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins. A number of the new Flames have contracts that expire at the end of the season. Some saw this as a desperation move by a GM about to lose his job.
At the end of the day, it’s likely the Flames have gotten better (mostly because Phaneuf was not playing up to his potential), but the team still sits precariously 3 points ahead of 9th place Red Wings, with Detroit holding a game in hand.
Let me just say thanks to the guys for giving us a great three weeks and a few new team records to shoot for:
- consecutive wins by team: 11
- consecutive wins by goalie: 9 (Elliott)
- consecutive goal-scoring games: 8 (Spezza, erasing one of Heatley’s records)
(I’m not sure, but is 6 road games also a new record or tying an exiting one?)
