I don't see a pressing need for OTT to make a deal that big. That's 3 roster players, or 1/6th of your playing team. That move changes the complexion of the team, which is probably the last thing you want at this point.

OTT might need a tweak -- i.e., adding one player without subtracting anyone, or subtracting one player at most -- but an overhaul right now would be a mistake. Don't fix what ain't broken, SSF. I don't get why you're anxious to change this team right now. Trade deadline deals rarely work out. For every Bill Guerin to PIT (2008) deal, there's 10 Keith Tkachuk to ATL (2007) deals.

I just think you have a better chance of winning a deal when the need isn't that pressing.

You're right in everything you say, but even with all the names involved, this deal amounts to a tweak as far as I can see. Essentially a Kuba for Souray swap.

Souray for Kuba + pick/prospect is a deal I'd consider, I guess, but I'm not sure why EDM would do it. Then there is the issue of whether or not he'd actually come to the east again, too.

I don't watch EDM enough, tho' -- can Souray still be relied on for top-4 minutes? That's crucial. Whatever his shortcomings, Kuba plays 20+ decent minutes for us a night. We need PP help, for sure, but we need a guy who can play 20+ minutes, kill penalties, and help bring along Karlsson and isolate him. I don't know if Souray is that guy.

Regin is not getting $2M as a sophomore. Campoli made $633K last year -- the QO is 110%, so just under $700K. Foligno was making $850K so the QO is 105%, or $892.5K.

You're richer than you think.

This is the team right here pretty much. I think Z.Smith might sneak on, but if he does, then presumably someone of similar value is removed.

I think we get one of Michalek, Hamhuis, Martin, Gonchar, Volchenkov or make a trade for a D-man making that kind of money that fits our need (easier said than done).

You might be a tad high on some of your projections, but even if you are, it doesn't pay for Cullen. Sad

Foligno and Regin on cheap longterm deals is what I would do, and it would look like that if that's the case.

Just looking at the compensation rules, I don't really believe that they won't be making 1 million.

If the numbers posted around the internet are right about RFA compensation, then up to 994K there is no compensation. I don't really see either getting through on less than that. There has to be at least one GM who's an a-hole and is going to drive up salaries.

Further from 994k to 1.5 million is a 3rd round pick. If I'm the GM of a team looking for young talent I would gladly throw 1.2 or 1.3 million a year at Regin and chance losing the 3rd round pick. Same with Foligno. That's cheap for a forward these days, and they are plug and play.

But would you really want to drive up salary for Foligno, who had a set back of sorts and, really, hasn't shown a hell of a lot since that first goal and the tribute leap? Or Winchester -- a nice guy with a little size and good board-work; what else has he got? Campoli had a poor half season followed by a pretty good half season. I don't mind him as a 5/6 guy but, surely, there are other options out there just as good. Can't use Jeff Finger or some-such as a comparable. That leaves Regin. How good was he? Well, in the regular season he got 29 points in 75 games; he missed a few games when he was a healthy scratch. Hardly a candidate for a huge raise or an offer sheet. He had a pretty good first playoffs but don't forget that we lost Michalek late in the season and Kovalev early in the post-season, and Regin got elevated to the top-line. He has not (IMO) proven himself yet as a legitimate top-six.

I'm not saying that some of them will not get $1M+, I'm just saying that you won't get all four of them making anywhere near the amounts originally listed.

I agree...

I guess what I'm saying is you qualify them and give them the contracts posted before (basically low ball them) and let them go to RFA. If they get offers they you have the choice to match..

Not just with our FA's I'm surprised you don't see this more. Although I do know, offers can't be extended on FA's that have arbitration rights...are any of our guys in that situation?
