Cas, interesting read there from AnotherSensBlog. Thanks for sharing.

So if Karlsson is strongly expected to make the team that pushes us another $1.3M (?) further in the hole. Even if we take Smith's cap hit off (LTIR) and send Lee to Bingo, we're at $1.7M cap room -- that's about right for injury reserves. With that we'd be carrying 12F, 6D and Schubert as a swing man. Perfect, except nothing has been said about Smith going on the LTIR (at least not by anyone who counts) and it sounded like Murray is quite high on Lee as well.

Even if Heatley is moved (to create the cap room) we still need to move a couple of defensemen (Smith and Schubert?)

I certailny hope there's no buyouts being planned -- those are expensive and, frankly, demeaning. I still think that Schubert at under $1M is a very useful player on some club. Surely we could get him traded, even if only for future considerations.

Unless Hedman busts, I don't see it. VH has almost 7 inches and 50lbs on Karlsson, and has basically been handed the #1, 25-30 minute per night position.

EDIT: That said, if Karlsson does make the team and plays on the top powerplay unit, he could walk away from this season with a lot of points.

Lets assume Smith won't take a spot.

That leaves us with the obvious top-3 (unfortunately, they're what should be our #2, 3, and 4 D-men, but lets not get into that) and a slew of young prospects ("prospects" in the sense that they are competing for jobs)

- Campoli is a good bet to see top-4 minutes, but I'm not sold on him.
- Lee made a good impression on me at the end of last season and it seems like he's going to get every opportunity to finally make the jump to full timer. That being said, it sounds as if he's running out of mulligans.
-Picard was a player Murray demanded in the Mez trade, but who knows what the reasons were for that. It could have been as simple as needing a francophone player for the day that Vermette was inevitably traded. He has potential, but he may just get squeezed out.
- The book on Karlsson is well known.
- Schubert has more experience than the rest of them and is a giant in comparison. He may have some potential to turn into a solid bottom pairing D, but that seems rather unlikely.

5 D-men for 3 spots, 3 of which on 1-way contracts and the other two 1st round picks.

...

Shrug In other words: I have no clue what they've got planned.

So Heatley speaks today, anyone know of the time of this presser? He is in BC, so imagine it will be later in the day since most of us are 3 or 4 hours in difference in terms of time.

Haven't seen anything with a time, but don't expect much. This is from Dreger's column:

Heatley will be accompanied in Kelowna by agent Stacey McAlpine who says we shouldn't expect his client to shed much light on why the star winger wants out of Ottawa. "There are several factors and a variety of reasons," McAlpine told TSN. "However, out of respect to the Ottawa Senators and all involved, Dany is not getting into specifics...that will remain confidential."

I think that second bolded statement deserves the monkey.

Leftie out of respect to the Ottawa Senators squirrel

(edited to remove linebreaks; they made it look like one of the monkeys was peeing on Senators)

As he is in Kelowna, expect it to be around 2 - 3 Eastern time.

:^^^^:

McAlpine: We have other media members waiting on the phones. Yes?
Phone: Mblkhxehtyzhgyoiutgp?
McAlpine: I'm sorry, we seem to have a bad connection. Did you have a question for Dany?
Phone: Sorry. I had a chicken leg caught in my
throat. Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Sun. Dany, my sources tell me that
there's a deal in the works that would have you dealt to San Jose in a
three way trade between the Sharks, Ottawa and Pittsburgh involving
Patrick Marleau, Evgeni Malkin, and a Zamboni to be named later. How
do you respond?
McAlpine: San Jose is lovely in February. On to line two. Hello?
Phone: Wayne Scanlon, Ottawa Citizen. Dany, would
you care to mention how badly this unpleasantness has affected your
family, friends, neighbours,
mail carrier, paper boy, pet groomer or anyone else with whom you've
had even the most casual contact within the last two years or who I
could roll out as sympathetic witnesses for the defence? Remember, you
had me at hello...
McAlpine: Thanks Wayne. If anyone else comes to
mind, we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, the "will call"
booth should have your tickets to the Gold Medal game. Oh, and the new
safety word should be in your inbox now. Hee-hee! Inbox...see what I
did there?
Scanlon: I need to draw you...
McAlpine: Ahem...well...yes. Maybe later. Next question?
Applebottom: Dany, seriously. Are you going to say anyth--
McAlpine: Mister Applebottom. Have you
not been listening? My client has said more than enough. Now then.
Last question. Back to the phones. Hello?
Phone: Hello. Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun. I'm not wearing pants!

So, nobody thinks that his press conference will tell us anything? They seem pretty convinced on the Team 1200 that he will divulge some of what his problem is. We'll believe it when we hear it though. He has also come out and said that he will in fact be showing up to training camp for Ottawa, no matter what happens.

I guess we really won't know until this afternoon for sure, details will be scarce though, still think he will say the bare minimum, just enough to appease Hockey Canada without any real content of what is going on in his head.

I don't expect too much from this... a lot of fluff, canned responses... certainly no criticism of the Sens in case he has to head back there and he'll want to make sure teams are still interested in trying to trade for him.

So... a whole bunch of nothing.

Hopefully the media will try and ask some tough questions... but I don't have my hopes up. They'll coo at him and then when they return to their basements to crank out an article, they'll make it sound like they slayed the dragon.

As I mentioned in the new thread that was started up:

There will only enough substance for him to feel that he will deflect
enough attention for when he starts the Olympic training camp. That is
my prediction. I am not sure it will work as his agents have been
providing him with Dung advice.

Talk about a PR nightmare. Ahhhhh!

So, what, you'd rather him come out and say, "I want out of OTT because it's a loser franchise, having been mismanaged for years, from the highest levels and down into the dressing room. The management is inept, and the locker room toxic; we've been bleeding talent ever since Chara left and substance abuse has been an issue for a while now [see: McGratton, Emery, Redden, etc.]." I know I sure as hell don't want him saying that in front of a world-wide audience.

As I've been saying forever, we need to at least consider the possibility that Heatley is doing us all a favour by not speaking out on his reasons for asking a trade. We might not at all like what the truth does to our organization's reputation, or the reputation of one of its prime assets -- which, whether you love him or hate him, Heatley is.

The truth is that there's nothing he can say -- short of "I'm sorry, I goofed, I'm going to work hard to make you guys love and respect me again," which is really what everyone clamouring for him to speak wants to hear -- that won't make either him or the team look bad. Either he is conciliatory or he white-washes, but it will never be 'the whole truth,' and we're probably better off leaving it at that. I don't know why this is so hard for most people around here to understand.

Here is what I'd like to hear Heatley say...

"It has come to my attention that it was indeed my own agent that leaked my trade request to the press. He has been fired as of today."

That's what I'd like to hear.

good luck on that one I am thinking, his agents seem to be sticking with him through thick and thin. He needs to hire Jerry MacGuire :^^^^:

Either he is conciliatory or he white-washes, but it will never be 'the whole truth,' and we're probably better off leaving it at that. I don't know why this is so hard for most people around here to understand.

My issue with the above is that, for one, this is McAlpine paving the way for Dany to say nothing worth saying. All through this Heatley has been doing nothing that would benefit this team. The only reason he is "talking" now is that he was pretty much given an ultimatum by Yzerman. Again, he's doing this for purely selfish reasons -- to preserve his spot on Team Canada. If not for that, we probably wouldn't see or hear from Heatley until he came to camp, and then he'd sit in the corner of the room with his earbuds in his ears.

OK, so maybe that was a little over the top, but the point still remains: he is only doing *this* for himself, so to couch it by saying he is not going to say anything out of respect for the Senators just makes me cringe.

As to the rest of your comments, why didn't he want out *when* Emery and McGrattan and Redden were here? Isn't the situation better now, then when those fiends were on the team? And as for mismanagement, why wasn't he quitting when Paddock ran the team into the ground after that 15-3 start? Or when Hartsburg came in and told everyone to play the trap, which destroyed their confidence? In Clouston we have finally found a coach whose system plays to the strengths of the team assembled for him by the GM, and who actually practices the accountability that Hartsburg only preached.
