another valid point indeed, man the booing will be huge the first time he plays at SBP if he is indeed in a Sens jersey this season, and it is looking more likely that will be the case. Murray has made it known he will not deal just for the sake of dealing, it has to be a good hockey deal, which makes me question accepting that Edm offer at free agency time, Cogs/Penner/Smid isn't a real attractive offer.
Murray loves to obtain guys he has drafted/signed before. Look at his history. I bet he really wanted Penner and Smid, while Cogs has some upside.
I actually think that deal was pretty good, certainly at the time it was announced. I think Cogliano has fairly significant upside as a top 6 forward, and Smid shows signs of becoming a very solid d-man. I know Pierre Maguire doesn't think much of Smid, but then I don't think much of Maguire.
The wild card in the deal was Penner. I know he's been overweight and not played particularly well. He could very well be a dud. However, I think he can regain his previous form in a different environment. He was clearly overpaid by the Oilers, and expectations set way too high, and he didn't rise to that challenge.
But in Ottawa he'd possibly be playing on the 3rd line, with expectations really low, and much less pressure. He'd also be playing in a system that proved pretty successful late last season, and Clouston might be able to offer the structure needed to get his game back on track.
Its a risk, but if Cogs and Smid pan out as many expect them too, and if Penner surprises by playing more like he did in Anaheim, the deal could work out well.
Now that the Sens have paid the $4M, hopefully Murray can wrangle a little more out of Edm, and maybe throw in Schubert to get him off the books.
With some extra cap space cleared up, it could open the door for Murray to make other moves to strengthen the team, like maybe getting Tanguay to play LW on one of the top 2 lines.
