Dawg was involved with another of Kevin Lee's, my source tells me, rumors. That was 2 years ago, before Dawg joined Chicago. Anyway, at that time he posted something in a HBuzz forum which K. Lee quoted word for word 2 minutes later, citing an NHL source told him and multiple had confirmed.

All this to say I don't believe anything He writes. Why would non of the NYR beat writers have any knowledge about this?

Why would Murray leak the names to the press, what would he gain from going that route rather than tell Sather directly. It's common place for GM's to mention players offered back and forth in deals.

How the hell do you think this stuff leaks. It's not because Edmonton or Ottawa leaked it, but because a rival GM who decided they didn't want to pay the price (knowing what the price is) leaked it.

I can not find one single way in which Murray would benefit from leaking the Edmonton players involved so Sather would find out.

Which makes perfect sense, so maybe it was the reverse that happened. Maybe Sather released the names and Murray called it off. Soon after, Gaborik was a Ranger....

Perhaps I need it spelled out to me. Why wou;d Sather leak the Oilers deal details and then grab Gaborik? Gaborik was a UFA, not a trade, so it's not like he would have been releasing the details of a rival deal. The more I think of it the more it looks like Murray would be the only person who would want other GMs to know the details but, as DW points out, he can just tell them directly. No-one benefits from this, so I'm left thinking this was a simple, garden-variety leak.

I really can't see them doing that either. So much money wasted... it would be insane, but then again...

Wink

Doesn't he have a NMC? Would Sather be able to move him to Edmonton for future considerations? I mean, if he has such strong ties with the Oilers that he backed out of the Heatley trade because Murray leaked the names of the players in the Oiler package ... :^^^^:
Redden has a "limited NTC" with a set of teams agreed to that he would accept a trade to. Sather was at least smart enough to not grant him a full NMC/NTC.

I'm still curious to know how/why Bryan Murray would be asking Sather for Ryan McDonagh when he was a Montreal Canadien?

As for his B-Sens coverage, he generally gets his info from Mike Sharp at pressconnects.com

Kevin Lie is a worse fraud than Eklund.

Could it have been part of a 3-way deal with Rags/Habs/Sens?

which makes me think they are still good buddies, unless they are in a bitter competition to see who looks like the biggest tool in the hockey world.

He claims that Murray asked for McDonagh prior to the Gomez deal. How would Murray know that Sather was planning on dealing Gomez at all and who they were getting back as well?

Why would Sather give Murray a heads up since he was steamed at him for purportedly breaking the "code". Whatever the hell that means. :^^^^:

it must be a GM's code, much like a guy's code, which usually the # 1 rule states you don't date your best friends little sister, just a guess though.

That's what I was wondering too, is he even on a 2 way contract? How could they do this at all? I don't understand.

He's not on a 2-way deal. As far as I understand, they'd just assign him to their AHL affiliate and get his salary off the cap. They'd still have to pay him but he'd be one hell of an expensive AHL player. But it would be a PR nightmare for them.

According to nhlscap.com, Redden only has a No-Trade clause. They shouldn't have a problem sending him to the minors.

A 2-way contract simply means he'd get paid *less* in the minors. You can waive a player and, once he clears waivers, assign him to the minors. If the player refuses to go he can then be suspended or, as in Mogilny's case, continue to get his full NHL salary while playing with guys who have little to no shot of making it (yeah, that's gotta be a lot of fun).

However I think in Redden's case the NHLPA might step in and ask WTH? In Mogilny's case they had a semi-legitimate reason because of his bad hip. Wasn't it a "conditioning" stint? In Redden's case, if he was making $1.5M-2M no-one would be complaining. He's just not good enough for $6.5M, but he can play at the NHL level -- just not very well. In that case it would be a clear cap manoeuvre and the NHLPA would be in their right to challenge it. The NHL itself would likely be against this move as well, as it's trying to by-pass the cap.

You can assign any player without a NMC to the AHL, if you so choose, regardless of whether he's on a 1- or 2-way contract. In all cases, that player's cap hit comes off the books, too.

The catch: for the guy on the 1-way deal, you'd be paying him his full NHL salary to play in the AHL. In the instance of Redden, that'd be $6.5 mil for the next 5 years, or $32.5 mil.

Teams that make a lot of money can afford to bury expensive, 1-way deals in the minor if they choose -- a luxury small-market teams just don't have. The first step is to put the guy on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, you then assign him to the AHL. As long as he reports to the AHL teams, he makes his full NHL salary. His salary comes of the cap books, but remains on the team's books.

Ok now that I understand the logistics of it I have to say I still don't think it was a go to move for Sather the way it was depicted in the Klee article.

It sounds like a desperate strategy and I don't think they were that desperate to get Heatley.
