Maybe Garth Snow and Bryan have been talking...draft day comes quicker than you think.

The problem with trading Spezza is that it opens up another hole. Who would then become the #1 center? You may fill a need but at the same time you're creating another hole.

In all likelihood this is true, although a crafty move or two, and you could end up in a reasonably solid position, but with more cap space.

I can't imagine the Sens getting a centre the calibre of Spezza for under $7 million a season.

Drury and Gomez got more than that on the market.

There should be a rule where no NHL salary can be compared to anything the Rangers give out.

I always felt that the Sabres wouldn't make the playoffs unless Miller started playing again like he did two years ago. Are they done?

What's going on with Boston? I realize they were tired after playing last night, but losing to the Lighting? They are 1-4-2 in their last 7. Not a good time of year t cool off, but better now than two weeks from now.

They may not be done yet but they are certainly in some serious trouble if Miller is out long term. He's the only reason they even have a chance to get into the playoffs.

The Wings did the same thing last year at pretty much this exact same point of the season...I wouldn't read too much into it.

As for Buffalo, they might be able to get some kind of Conklin-esque performance out of Lalime, but I suspect they're done.
Back when it was more plausible that we could go on a run to get in (so like two days ago) I was saying that we needed 3 teams to falter. I figured New York and Carolina were the best bets to regress/continue regressing, but it would seem that PIT and Buffalo are solid bets for that to happen, along with NYR.
Not that its relevant to us anymore Crying

This year he is at #21.

This was a normal year? Thanks for the info. Just because you know it all doesn't I don't know anything.

SSF, no reason to get offended. We're just talking hockey.

You can spin the Spezza thing a million times, it never gets any easier to figure out. Is he the guy? Is he a loser? Is he still too young to discard?

Forget it, no one can tell you that but the coaches and the guys on the team. It's just too hard to look at it like you're trading a playing card. The same things were being said about Datsyuk and the Wings held onto him - and look.

If you trade Spezza, you do it at the deadline - and you do it for a disgustingly good D-man under contract for a long, long time. We'd be well served by bringing in a 2nd line center who oozes the winning attitude to push and help Spezza. Someone like Doug Weight or Mike Modano (not necessarily them obviously, but someone of that age and pedigree).

There are other problems that Murray will have to contend with as well- like...do you flip Spezza for a D-man now, or do you wait for Karlsson and Wiercioch to come in and add a jolt to our Big 3?

It's a tough one. For the record - after flip-flopping a million times, I still can't bring myself to believe that the Sens would give up on Spezza now. I know I don't really want to - and a NTC can be dealt with if things don't work out. We might not get the same return, but...it's a small(ish) chance to take that this guy can and will get back to his post-lockout form.

Why would you deal Spezza over Heatley? Why?!

Heatley is:
more expensive
older
a complementary player - Spezza has the potential to be the main guy
a winger
more valuable right now I'd wager

confused

And then Murray has to contend with this this summer:

Heatley (7.5) - Spezza (7) - Alfredsson (5.4)
Foligno (0.9) - Fisher (4.2) - Comrie (3.5 tops)
Regin (0.7) - Vermette (2.75) - Shannon (1.0 resign)
Ruutu (1.3) - Bass (0.6) -Winchester (0.6)

Donovan (0.6)

which is ~ 36 million

Then:

Phillips - Volchenkov (6 total)
Campolli (0.6) - Smith (2.6)
Lee (1.3) - Picard (0.8)

Bell (0.6* if resigned)

so that`s another 12 million or so,

then the two goalies who should add up to 2.1 million - which brings the bottom line to 50 million dollars. You can subtract what you want to subtract, but you still have to fill that space with someone of value.

You can take out Comrie`s 3.5 million, but you have to replace him with someone. If you replace him with Shannon, you have to replace Shannon etc. etc. etc.

Depending on what Murray wants to spend and what Melnyk will let him go to - it might be harder than it looks to sign on off-season D-man.

Still not sure exactly why we brought in Comrie to be truthful, but....I like him a lot. scratch

The same exact scenario as Spezza applies to Heatley in my mind. His NMC has kicked in, thus, are we in a rush to trade himÉ Can we not wait to see if he`ll rebound and get back to the back to back 50 -100 season

I would rather deal Heatley for sure, but my initial reaction is to not deal either one right now.

I think trading either right now is stupid as well.

Talk all you want about them being disappointments, but they signed their big deals before last season and were still both very solid that year.

Our break-out sucked this season. Give them a year with any system that can generate some offence and they'll be back up to high levels of production and back up in trade value.
