It's possible that when Karlsson/the draftee this year/Wiercioch become impact players, Heatley stops being one and is reduced to a more expensive current Shanahan.

At 30? Or 31? I just don't see that personally. But again, if we can swing it to keep both...wow, look out, I think there would be goals aplenty in the near future.

Here's my shot...I am focusing on reducing the salary cap to $50MM or less. I see 2009-10 as a transition year.

March 4:
Fisher>CLB for Filatov, Kiesla
Kuba, Neil, Kelly>MTL for Subban, Higgins
Schubert waived

June:
Sign Dwayne Roloson to 1 year deal 3.5MM (as mentor for Elliott)
Comrie walks, wants too much $

Total cost 48MM-50MM for line up 2009-10:

Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson
Vermette-Ruutu-Foligno
Filatov-Shannon-Higgins
Bass/Regin-Donovan-Petersson

Volchenkov-Kiesla
Phillips-Subban
Smith-Campoli
Lee

(Picard and Bell to Bingo)

Roloson-Elliott-Auld

Fisher for Filatov and Klesla? Just how crazy is Scott Howson? Even with Fisher scoring 25 a year (22 is his highest), he's a tad overpaid since he isn't a lock to hit 25. Yes he brings alot of other things, but that return for Fisher is very very high. I doubt he'd do Filatov straight up, much less adding a quality guy like Klesla.

I also don't believe that Murray will let Comrie walk away again. I think Comrie will sign for less, as he didn't want to leave the first time. I think he signs for $3-3.5, which would be decent imo.

How old will Roloson be next year? 40? Isn't that like 113 in hockey years? I'd much rather hitch my wagon to Auld and Elliot, who will make about half of what Roloson currently makes combined. The beauty of next season is having this goaltending combo for dirt cheap. I'm talking under $2 million. That extra money will go a long way towards shoring up other areas. Right now Elliott doesn't need a mentor, he needs a team in front of him to actually stake him to a lead once in a while instead of falling behind 3-0, 4-0 every night. If the team does that more often, I'm more than happy to go into next season with Auld/Elliott.

Hem, many thanks for your questions...I see I have your rapt attention :D

First off, I have Howson over a barrel. He needs a fast, gritty, skilled center/wingman. Fisher is exactly the kind of player Hitch loves. Fish helps 'em get into the playoffs and go deep. Besides, Fisher will be closer to his sweetie in Nashville and Ohio is very Christian-friendly. As for Filatov and Kiesla, quality like Fisher--which will pay for itself in playoff revenue--requires that he send Niki and Rosti to the Nation's Capital.

Sorry, I know Bryan Murray likes Comrie, but 4MM for Mikey and Hilary is too much.

As for Rollie The Goalie...again, with all due respect, I am overruling you here and going straight to Eugene on this. I've scouted Roloson heavily this year, and watched him come up with big game after big game for the Oily Ones. Brian Elliott--contrary to your assertion--needs a mentor to develop his talent properly. Who better than Dwayne, with all his experience? I'm firing Eli Wilson, by the way, and hiring Roloson as a player/assistant coach. It's 3.5 MM well spent for just one season, to get some stability between the pipes and turn Bri-El into a #1. Alex Auld will also be happy to have Rollie around to learn from.

BTW at the draft, I'm going for the best possible goaltending prospect. The scouts are working on recommendations as we speak.

Wow, I don't know where to start. I'll give you points for creativity but....

First off, Fisher is not being traded. Even if he was Columbus is not going to give up Filitov for him much less Filitov and Kiesla.

Montreal is not giving up Subban in that package. They already have 5 or 6 Chris Kellys. Also, I would be absolutely shocked to see Subban in the league next year. He is so weak defensively it's actually funny.

That lineup might actually get us Hall at next years draft.

Dave's Fantasy line-up isn't that bad actually. You have to mix and match the lines a little though:

Foligno-Spezza-Heatley
Filatov-Vermette-Alfredsson
Shannon -Regin-Higgins
Ruutu-Bass-Donovan

Volchenkov-Campoli
Phillips-Klesla
Smith-Lee

Something like that. It would be a fast team, that's for sure - and a green team too.

504H, thanks for the compliment :D

IMHO going 'green' is good...this would be an entertaining lineup...

As for Robby's insistence that CLB would not be interested in Fisher, my rationale is well founded. Fisher is DEFINITELY a Hitch kind of player. Filatov is a desirable commodity, but he hasn't cracked the lineup this year and Jackets want the playoff money NOW. Howson can afford to give up Filatov and Kiesla.

Subban not ready? He was ready to jump into the league for this season...just wasn't able to break into the Habs' lineup. He would be electrifying in Ottawa.

Gainey needs D, grit and another solid two way player (in the Gainey/Carbo mould). Kuba, Neil and Kelly respectively solve his issues.

I rest my case :pirat:

So let's see what hand Robby wants to play... Wink

As the new GM I have decided to "fix" the team from the Goal out.

I have traded all remaining UFAs by the deadline and acquired picks. Thankfully we are ready to deal at the draft with all the extra picks and prospects I have acquired.

Mike Comrie just refused a 3 year 9M deal to be a 2nd Line player so I shipped him off.

Before the draft I send one of the 2nd rounders I have acquired to Minny for the rights to sign Backstrom. Thankfully he agrees to a 3 year 13.5M deal.

On draft day I shock the Hockey world with a Blockbuster deal:
I send Spezza to Atlanta to be Kovy's Centre and in return I receive Atlanta's 2nd overall pick and their 2010 1st rounder. I get skewered by the talking heads at TSN but this move was to clear space and change the core of my team. I have a plan.

I send Brian Lee to NYI for their 2nd round pick and to ensure that they select John Tavares. They are thrilled as am I.

With the 2nd overall pick I select Victor Hedman and then with our own 6th overall pick I am thrilled to see that MSP is still available and complete the Swedish Sweep. I trust my scouts and use my other 4 picks in the 22 - 50 spots to stock the farm like never before.

July 1st rolls around and I stay away from the JBo and make my first signing. Mathias Ohlund at 5M for 3 years. (In a side note the Sens new colours are Blue and Gold).

It is now time for the big splash - I send an offer sheet to David Krejci. 5 years at 5M per. Boston is angry but they can't match. They quickly take the picks and resign Phil Kessel.

I resign my lower level RFAs giving a nice bump to Ryan Shannon (900K).

And here is the Ottawa Senators 2009/2010 roster:

Alfie - Krejci - Heatley
Vermette - Fisher - Shannon
Foligno - Kelly - Winchester
Donovan - Bass - Ruttu

Ohlund - Volchenkov
Phillips - Campoli
Picard - Smith
Bell

Backstrom - Elliott

All this for under 53M.

Now that was a good summer.

All quite interesting - although....tough to imagine.

You don't think Boston would match that offer sheet? I definitely think they do.

They are kind of up against the cap. Kessell and Krejci are going to need big raises. And then next year it gets worse.

I would trade Kessel then. With Wheeler and Lucic set to become your franchise wingers, I would probably sacrifice a future 40 goal man to keep those guys.

I would also trade Bergeron to the first team that would give me the time of day. Sorry Bergie, you're not the same anymore - and you're making way too much $$.

Actually, that's quite true. They have deep issues coming up cap wise. Yeah...maybe, but wouldn't you rather wait until Lucic is an RFA and shower him with cash?

I want a number 1 centre to replace Spezza. Lucic is never leaving Boston. NEVER. He will never get to his FA years.

I wouldnt touch Kessel with a 10 foot pole, that guy is soft, whiney, lacks passion and is extremely inconsistant.

You don't know that. What's he worth? 4 million a year, 5? I bet his agent fields a ton of calls with teams willing to up the ante to 5.5 X 10. Would he settle for less? Can Boston even match that?

I think there's a lot more to these situations than just 'locking' up a guy.
