Vermette is outplaying Comrie this year, is being payed less, plays shorthanded, and is actually good at faceoffs (Comrie is a stunning 41%). Did I also mention that Vermette is younger, gives the puck away less and has twice as many hits! Personally, I'd rather have Vermette than Comrie.
Hopefully we keep both of them, and Vermette is finally given someone to play with. If we had to get rid of somebody, I'd want it to be Kelly. I like the guy and everything, but he does not deserve to be on an offensive line.
I believe we will re-sign Comrie, probably 3-4 years in the 3.2 - 3.7 million range, although hopefully for less, because if he gets that, Vermette will command about the same, if not more. But at least this means we SHOULD have some solid secondary scoring next year.
Vermette has played 16 more games on a better team. I sure hope his point total and hits would be better. Comrie is a career 2 points in 3 games guy; Vermette is under 1 point in 2 games. I can't disagree about face offs. Vermette will fetch us more than Kelly, and save us a bit more in cap space. But I wouldn't mind if Kelly was moved either.
Comrie has always been a top two line guy, which is not something Vermette has been given. Comrie's linemates have always been much better than Vermette's. Vermette has turned his season around, is putting up better numbers (18pts in the last 21 games). Yes he could fetch us more than Kelly, but that's not a good reason to trade him. Why would you trade away someone who wants to be here, competes every game, is not signed on for much money???
Vermette has never been given any respect. He plays on a line with Kelly and Ruutu for goodness sakes. Spezza wouldn't be able to do anything either!!!
I'd rather keep Vermette ver Kelly, but let's call a spade a spade. Vermette has been given chance after chance to play on the top-two lines. Most recently a string of 6 games on the top line where he got something like 1 assist. That is why he is now on the third line with Kelly and Ruutu. His 18 points in 21 games still doesn't bring his season average to 1/2 point per game. Befoer the last 21 games he had 8 points in 36 games.
