Vermette is outplaying Comrie this year, is being payed less, plays shorthanded, and is actually good at faceoffs (Comrie is a stunning 41%). Did I also mention that Vermette is younger, gives the puck away less and has twice as many hits! Personally, I'd rather have Vermette than Comrie.

Hopefully we keep both of them, and Vermette is finally given someone to play with. If we had to get rid of somebody, I'd want it to be Kelly. I like the guy and everything, but he does not deserve to be on an offensive line.

I believe we will re-sign Comrie, probably 3-4 years in the 3.2 - 3.7 million range, although hopefully for less, because if he gets that, Vermette will command about the same, if not more. But at least this means we SHOULD have some solid secondary scoring next year.

Vermette has played 16 more games on a better team. I sure hope his point total and hits would be better. Comrie is a career 2 points in 3 games guy; Vermette is under 1 point in 2 games. I can't disagree about face offs. Vermette will fetch us more than Kelly, and save us a bit more in cap space. But I wouldn't mind if Kelly was moved either.

Comrie has always been a top two line guy, which is not something Vermette has been given. Comrie's linemates have always been much better than Vermette's. Vermette has turned his season around, is putting up better numbers (18pts in the last 21 games). Yes he could fetch us more than Kelly, but that's not a good reason to trade him. Why would you trade away someone who wants to be here, competes every game, is not signed on for much money???

Vermette has never been given any respect. He plays on a line with Kelly and Ruutu for goodness sakes. Spezza wouldn't be able to do anything either!!!

I'd rather keep Vermette ver Kelly, but let's call a spade a spade. Vermette has been given chance after chance to play on the top-two lines. Most recently a string of 6 games on the top line where he got something like 1 assist. That is why he is now on the third line with Kelly and Ruutu. His 18 points in 21 games still doesn't bring his season average to 1/2 point per game. Befoer the last 21 games he had 8 points in 36 games.

He's played there before. Like I said earlier, he's on of the few guys who could step onto the top line (at any position) and produce.

I'm really warming up to this trade. Campoli put up 34 points as a rookie. Let's hope he can duplicate that.

Oh, here's the link to Garrioch's article:

So will Comrie and Campoli be playing tomorrow? Or are we looking at the game after that?

He was given a chance last year to play on the second line and finished the season with 50 some points. I don't actually recall him being on the top line this year, not that it would make a difference the way the top line was playing, or the system we had in place under Hartsburg. Everyone on the team was on pace for their lowest point totals in years. Of course he wasn't scoring when you implement a defence first system. He's a player that requires speed and energy to thrive, and that is the opposite of what was happening under Hartsburg, but he is getting that under Clouston. It's for that reason that Vermette has more points than Spezza in the last 21 games.

asq2 wrote:How? We've lost our SJ pick which potentially could have helped us move up, and our pick will get worse since Comrie and Campoli should be minorly advantageous.

None of Kuba, Vermette etc. should return a first right now, either.

If Comrie and Campoli are coming in, then someone's moving out. If Kelly or Vermette and Kuba are dealt as well I personally don't know if this team's even a little bit better off this season.

There's way more coming. I'm half-expecting something else to happen by Monday - or earlier.

Watch for who's not in the lineup against the Habs.

Kuba-Campoli
Phillips-Volchenkov
Smith-Bell/Lee

That leaves Picard (mercifully) and one of Bell or Lee as the odd man out.

I think Comrie needs 2nd line minutes. I'd really like to see him centering Fisher and Shannon. Problem is that Vermette needs to get his minutes too as he's picked up his game, and if we want to try and increase his value, being on the 3rd line won't do that.

He was for about 11 games if I recall. Of course this season so far and most of last year could be lumped into one giant pile of suck in my mind lol.

I didn't realize that either. Good on him. The fact that he's outscoring Spezza in that span is very, very disturbing though.

People may not agree with me, might take heat here, but after that bomb of a game Spezza played last night, and 2 nights before in Colorado, he might be on the block.

I dont think anyone can say with certainty that there is not a Spezza deal in place. It's going to be intersting until the deadline.

I agree with you, don't agree with the thought though. I think Clouston had a good long look at how Fisher played with Heatley - and how Vermette played with Heatley in the last couple of games.

I thought he may have been traded right after the Vancouver game. That was the kind of game that can end a career in a city - if for nothing else, the GM feels he's doing something.

I think he's on the block big time - and I think it's for a #1 D-man for sure. I think he's trying to massage a #1 D-man and a top 6 winger from a team for Spezza and Kuba. Like a Visnovky and Cole for example - just an example - I actually dislike that trade immensely - totally an example. :D

Something like that - out of left field. Sam Gagner and Sheldon Souray for Spezza and Kuba. Something that allows Edmonton to get a franchise center for Hemsky, unfortunately lose Souray, but gain some cap flexibility to add someone else via trade or free agency. Maybe they feel Hilbert is ready to step up in a top pairing role.

Gagner has been struggling this year, but he's got a ton of potential, Edmonton just wants that potential realized now by acquiring Spezza.

Wow...that was probably way too long. :D

In his last 21!? WTF, I stopped looking at the stats pages completely. That's not too bad at all when you're getting secondary points as well.

I would love to know how many points Vermette had in his 18 games before that. Anyone have the stats handy?
