Granted, this year's draft is supposed to be stacked, but I have a feeling it's stacked in the top-10 or top-15 (relative to previous drafts) and that by the time you get to 25-30 you're still looking at (on average) a "fringe NHLer".

If SJ get's bounced in the 1st round around what would that pick be... Would it still be a late like 26-30 or could it be higher say 20 or something like that?

THose not making the playoffs = 1-14
First round knocked off = 15-22
Second round KO = 23-26
Conference finalists = 27-30

Since SJ will likely be top 2 in points in the regular season, if they get bounced in the 1st round they will go 21 (if Boston gets KO too) or 22nd.
If they get bounced 2nd round, likely 25 or 26th
Conference finals Exit = 27-28th
Finals = 29th
Stanley Cup = 30th.

Thx marakh and cash. No matter what it will still be around the end so that's good to hear.

You really have to trust your scouts though. I know what you're saying, and I buy into it for the most part, but there's always that chance that your scouts can find a big time player there (or anywhere).

What if Comrie becomes Jokinen and Campoli becomes CHara?

I can provide som insight into this. I called Dawg last night to get the scoop on Campoli. Heard his name but never really considered watching him to see how his game is. This is a quote.

"Well let me start by saying that personal biased aside I think Murray stole one away from the Isles again. While Snow wasn't involved in the last fiasco (Yashin for Chara and Spezza) this time it's my opinion that Murray Fleeced Snow. While McCammond is a nice player and his speed is an asset in Ottawa, he wasn't physical enough to help out in his role on the 3rd or 4th line. Add to that he wasn't scoring and a UFA and you have a guy who doesn't fit on Ottawa's team. The only reason I feel he was still there, is that Bass got hurt and couldn't play, otherwise I think McCammond may have been sent to Bingo or sitting in the press box a lot this year.

With Comrie you get a 2nd line player you know can play with Fisher and he also isn't afraid to throw his weight around. Remember he was first man in to defend many of his team mates a couple of years ago. He plays much bigger than he is, and that kind of example can only help in Ottawa.

Campoli is an enigma. He has very good speed for a d-man and can run just about any powerplay in the league. His shot is good, but his ability to move the puck is exactly what Ottawa was looking for. At 24 he still has a year left on a very cheap contract, and after that he is a RFA so that helps tremendously.

Ottawa wasn't the only team looking at him but no one else was willing to give up their 1st round pick as all the teams I heard rumored looking at him will all be top 20 picks.

Assuming SJ makes round two or later, that pick would likely be somewhere in the 26 to 30 range. That being the case while this year is a strong draft year, it's really only exceptional for the top 4 or 5 picks, the next 10 after that 6 through 15 are all going to be very solid NHL players. In the 25-30 range your getting a player is is really projected to be no better than all those taken in the 2nd round. That's not to say there arn't stars there, (there always are) but there is no guarantee and any player drafted after 20 is likey 4 to 5 years away from being on a team.

Ottawa needed a PMD now, and Campoli is someone who in 2 years coupled with Karlsson will be all the speed and puck moving Ottawa will need."

Take it for what it's worth...just one mans opinion

Thats some great insight DW. Thanks. Is Dawg a scout or an analyst? I know he works in the business...just not sure what he does...

Giddy-up.

Although I don't compute the "enigma" part. Why is he an enigma? An enigma would be if you know something's there but aren't sure what or when you'll see it. Statements like "he could run just about any powerplay in the league" don't equate to "enigma" for me.

Sorry for not replying right away..had to take my son out to skate...hockey day in Canada you know..

Anyway, he's a scout for a western conf team...in fact he said that his team was looking at trying to acquire Campoli.

I'll find out from Dawg why he said that...I just cut and paste his response to me.

To be honest some times I wonder if he really knows what half the words he uses mean. He knows hockey though...he let me know that it looks like they want him to start scouting some of the pro players before the deadline. That's good news as if he gets moved up to pro scouting he may be able to move back home and scout teams in the eastern conference and fly in and out of Ottawa.

Campoli is a decent player though, although his -20 wouldn't seem to indicate that.

I think this sets up Vermette being shipped out? Or someone. Maybe Comrie gets flipped on the 4th?

Hopefully.

The SJ first was our ticket to move up in this draft.

Brian Burke is laughing right now. He'll probably ask for three firsts for Antropov.

Or, this was Murray's way of getting something he needs, while making sure that Burke gets screwed.
Nobody will give up that much for Antropov.

What about even boosting the stock for Murrays own players like Vermette, Kelly (who has similar numbers to Comrie this year), Kuba, or even Fisher.

Comrie has 20 points in 41 games. Kelly has 16 in 57. How are those numbers similar?

The numbers are similar based on what they are on pace for in games played.

Kelly is on pace for 22pts and a -6 while Comrie is on pace for 31 pts and a -8. I guess the only close thing is the +/-.

Yeah i think he will be making more moves ,geared towards next season this one is a wash

I'm wondering if acquiring Campoli affects whether Murray will pursue Bouwmeester in the offseason, should he hit FA.

I think that if Murray was serious about Bow he now has an extra asset to make a trade for him now if Martin was open to accepting a package that didn't include a 1st.

I think something along the lines of Lee, Vermette, and Kuba for a signed Bow and a pick or prospect.

Any GM who accepts a couple losers and Vermette for Bouw deserves to be fired.

Not saying it would happen but its what I have read on what Martin would be interested in. Kuba is the unknown but is on pace for the same point total as Bow and could be signed cheaper than Bow in the off season.

Phoenix, Jacques Martin already has a pretty good d-corps even without JayBo. He has stated on several occasions that he is looking for scoring help.

PS Panthers beat the Bruins tonight 2-zip.

They also have pretty darn good goaltending BTW.

Kuba has one goal, 20 second assists and a handful of first assists, while playing behind Alfredsson, Spezza, and Heatley.........
It would be a miracle if Murray could turn Kuba and Lee into Bouwmeester...That would definitely be worth losing Vermette.
