Buh...holy Dung. Am I the only one who didn't have a diddling clue he had 18 points in his last 21!!?

I didn't realize that either. Good on him. The fact that he's outscoring Spezza in that span is very, very disturbing though.

People may not agree with me, might take heat here, but after that bomb of a game Spezza played last night, and 2 nights before in Colorado, he might be on the block.

I dont think anyone can say with certainty that there is not a Spezza deal in place. It's going to be intersting until the deadline.

I agree with you, don't agree with the thought though. I think Clouston had a good long look at how Fisher played with Heatley - and how Vermette played with Heatley in the last couple of games.

I thought he may have been traded right after the Vancouver game. That was the kind of game that can end a career in a city - if for nothing else, the GM feels he's doing something.

I think he's on the block big time - and I think it's for a #1 D-man for sure. I think he's trying to massage a #1 D-man and a top 6 winger from a team for Spezza and Kuba. Like a Visnovky and Cole for example - just an example - I actually dislike that trade immensely - totally an example. :D

Something like that - out of left field. Sam Gagner and Sheldon Souray for Spezza and Kuba. Something that allows Edmonton to get a franchise center for Hemsky, unfortunately lose Souray, but gain some cap flexibility to add someone else via trade or free agency. Maybe they feel Hilbert is ready to step up in a top pairing role.

Gagner has been struggling this year, but he's got a ton of potential, Edmonton just wants that potential realized now by acquiring Spezza.

Wow...that was probably way too long. :D

In his last 21!? WTF, I stopped looking at the stats pages completely. That's not too bad at all when you're getting secondary points as well.

I would love to know how many points Vermette had in his 18 games before that. Anyone have the stats handy?

Just got home. Almost drove off the road when I heard about the trade.

I quite like the trade. The 1st rd. pick will be 21st at best, 30th at worst. If Murray really wants to get a similar pick back, he can. Ottawa will have around the 40th pick overall, along with whatever they get for Kuba.

McAmmond was useless to the Sens now, and I imagine Murray just wanted to dump a bit of salary and create a spot. The Islanders will probably flip McAmmond for a draft pick soon.

Campoli was a name that was reported back as early as November. He fits the mold of what Murray was looking for: a young PMD where the team still had some salary control. Murray has taken the SJ pick and instead of drafting an 18 yr. old PMD, he has a 23 yr. old PMD.

Comrie comes back and I don't think he'll get away this time. If Murray resigns Comrie, then the deal is a successful one. I don't think coupling the OTT and SJ picks would have allowed the Sens to move up very far anyways.

Combining the two trades surrounding that 1st round pick:

Meszaros
McAmmond

for

Campoli
Comrie
Kuba
Picard

i knew has was doing better but i went back through the game logs and counted up....makes it sad to think that in the first 36 games he had 8 points

Just to be symmetrical, in the 21 games prior to that, Vermette only had 4.

But you don't think Spezza should have more than 17pts in the last 21 games??? I'm just puzzled by "That's not too bad when you're getting secondary points as well"??? You mean from a team's perspective?

Before that? Something like 7 points all year :lol!:

In all honesty, I think Schubert and Neil move for picks as well as Kuba, and that's about it...

WE certainly dont have cap problem going into next year. As I said in the other thread, if we resign Comrie at 3.4 Million (he wont get more), we still have 8 freakin million to resign Elliott and add a Top Defenseman. If Bouwmeester is not traded at the Deadline, this is the chance of a lifetime for Bryan Murray. He should give everything he has in terms of marketing. Melnyk should too. I can only dream about our team for next year if all of this happens. ANd the scariest part is it is not impossible by any stretch. Move Picard for a 7th rounder I dont care, and we have even more cash available.

From a team perspective, yeah. Spezza is well over a PPGer, I'm still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for struggling through Hartsburg's stifling system. I actually didn't think he'd have 17 in his last 21 to be honest.

EDIT: My goodness...4 points in 21 games before that. That's your season right there. So much disgusting amounts of pressure on Spezza, Heatley and Alfredsson to score. I bet it takes them past the pre-season next year to remember to stop gripping the stick so tightly. Wow...no one else was scoring on this bloody team. That's sick. No way Comrie gets away this time the more I think about it - we can't afford to lean everything on the Big 3, you have to have some secondary scoring.

Spezza was useless without alfredsson last night. Im am inches from saying Spezza is useless without Alfie ever. Our 2nd unit PP has become the first just because Alfie wasn't there. Spezza basically didn't play on PP vs Vancouver. May be 1 minute all game.
Vermette and Fisher have both played better than Spezza as centers since January and it looks like Vermette makes Heatley better when Spezza doesnt... Most of Heatley's goals, Vermette gets the assist. There you go, 18 pts in 21 games.
I am not a trade spezza dude but seriously if Spezza stills plays like this until the end of the season I will not cry if he gets traded.

Next years cap navigation is largely irrelevant - its all about 2010-11...that year won't be easy for us. Don't expect a big time UFA signing. You can argue that if you want...just heed my words.

Btw I'm loving this trade!

Vermette plays on a different line almiost every game, he still gets the points. It's been since Late december now. He also has been the reason we won the games we won, huge penalty kill and huge faceoffs at key times.
Its been 2 months that the pressure should have been gone.

Touche.

Have Spezza, Heatley and Alfie's numbers gone up in those 21 games as opposed to the 21 games where Vermette got 4?

You're operating way too much on a game to game basis.

Three games doesn't suddenly put a player on the block. Spezza owned up and said exactly what he had to by saying he wasn't good enough, and at the end of the game threw his weight around.

Not only does this not have to happen at the deadline, but if Murray trades him now he's getting the lowest value possible.

Spezza's most likely injured right now but he didn't just magically get worse this season - our system did and it shows.

Wait one season as the puck-movement improves and Clouston or another coach implements a more agressive system and he's back up contending for the Art Ross and his value soars back up to where it should be.

Dealing him right now is absolutely moronic.

^ I agree with you. I'm just tossing out my own little conspiracy theory. I said I was against the thought of it. I want to see what Spezza, Heatley and Alfie can do with a number one D-man and some secondary guys who score more than 4 points in 21 games.

I truly believe Murray when he says that he can't deal Spezza because he has no idea how to replace a player like that.

The only way I can see this happening is if we get Duchene at the draft IMO.

EDIT: Of course, that means not dealing him at the deadline. And it'll take Duchene a while (if he ever does) to reach a similar level to Spezza, which we can't really wait for.

I doubt he does the more I think about it - and that goes for Heatley as well.

Right now I'm thinking that when Vermette gets a legit chance with a player of Heatley's caliber, he's worth keeping - which opens up options for perhaps putting Comrie with Spezza. There might be some options here that can propel Vermette into a more effective player offensively.

I think if we're going to keep Heatley and Spezza long-term, they have to be on different lines.
