Good puck mover, fast as hell, smart with the puck. Basically Murray picked up a player on a bad team that could be great somewhere else.

No one can be pissed or happy with this trade for at least a year or two because no one has any clue what is going to happen.

As for dealing the pick, what will the difference in draft position from our 2nd rounder and SJ 1st rounder be? 5, 6 picks? tops 10? If they player Murray wants, he can get with the 2nd round pick, why the hell not deal the pick. Sure, could be dealt to move up in the draft, but right now, we dont know where we are drafting do we? I highly doubt any team would trade down for the 28-30 pick overall to miss out on Hedman or Tavares.

Here is Lyle Richardson's (Spectorshockey.net) take on the deal, as posted on Fox Sports Hockey today.

Senators Acquire Comrie and Campoli.
Feb 20, 2009 | 2:55PM

For weeks the Ottawa Senators were expected to be sellers in the final weeks leading up to the trade deadline. Despite their recent improvement under new head coach Cory Clouston and suggestions from GM Bryan Murray that he wasn't giving up on the season it was believed Murray would start dumping assets to playoff-bound teams soon.

Murray however may have sent a message today that he still believes in his team, acquiring center Mike Comrie and defenseman Chris Campoli from the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Dean McAmmond and a first round pick in 2009, which originally belonged to the San Jose Sharks.

Comrie, 28, has 20 points in 41 games and missed 17 games earlier in the season with a hip injury. He's eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer and this move suggests he may not have plans of returning to the Islanders after this season. He'd played 41 games for the Senators during the 2006-07 season.

The surprising part of this deal is landing Campoli, a puck-moving defenseman that had been considered at one time a key part of the Islanders future but according to Newsday's Greg Logan the 24-year-old Campoli wasn't getting along with head coach Scott Gordon and requested a trade.

With another season remaining on his current contract at a cap hit of only $633K this is a very affordable pickup for the Senators, who'd been in the market for a puck-moving defenseman for some time.

The Islanders certainly didn't get much back for these two. The 35-year-old McAmmond is on the downside of his career, has a history of concussion injuries and might not find an NHL contract next summer when he becomes a UFA.

The first round pick isn't bad as this year's draft is expected to be a very deep one, but it's the Sharks pick so it'll be no better than 28th overall. Perhaps the Isles can use that as bait either at the trade deadline or more likely at this year's draft to land a young player.

This deal in the short term very much favors the Senators. Only time will tell if this can translate into something good for the Isles.

Actually, Isles fans I've been talking to say that isn't really the case. We'll wait and see.

wprager wrote:Please! First of all, Hedman hasn't played a single game in the NHL. Nothing is guaranteed. Second, they can become UFAs after what, 7 years in the league? A great defenseman doesn't become great until he's been in the league 3-4 years, at which point the entry-level contract is over and he's already making $4M plus (Meszaros, anyone?) Forget 15 years.

Obviously I'm exaggerating, I'm just opposed to the concept of trying to improve the team now after suffering through watching the first 50 games of the season.

When you are the only guy on the ice with any skill, then you might look a little dumb with the puck. Murray said he was trying for 2 years now to get him, and he finally has.

I have to say that I pretty happy to have Comrie back. I just hope Murray can sign him at a cheaper rate. I don't know much about Campoli but I have been hearing some good things.

I am so happy to have Comrie back, it's not even a joke.

However, I've heard rumblings that Murray feels he can re-trade him before the March 4th deadline for at least a 2nd rounder - and possibly a decent prospect.

Interesting twist if this turns out to be the case.

Every player on the Sens now is 100% expendable for the most part. There might be 2 guys who are untouchables.

I think we are all overvaluing that SJ pick. This year's draft is deep, but is it 25-30 players deep? Usually once you are out of the top-five it's a crap shoot. This year, perhaps, it will be top-15. Once you get to SJ's spot it will be a crapshoot. I'll bet a quarter that there will be a better player picked in in the later rounds than SJ's pick.

There almost certainly will be, but that doesn't diminish its value. Lidstrom was picked in the third round, but it doesn't mean that a third rounder is worth more than a first rounder IMO.

The pick was just a great piece to move up with. Couple that with the potential improvement with Campoli and Comrie and it could mean the difference between something like the third overall pick and the 9th-10th overall pick.

I agree that the pick was valuable, I just don't agree that it would have helped us move up very much, if at all. For example, if we finished with a 12 and SJ's was a 27, maybe we move to 9, but not top-5.

All IMO, of course.

Very sexy little trade if I do say so myself!

I think it's dreadful. We improve marginally, but have no shot at the playoffs if SC is right and Alfredsson is gone for a month.

We shoot ourselves in the foot by getting a worse draft pick, AND we get rid of a way to move up in the draft with SJs pick.

Comrie is a UFA.

I don't buy into that theory personally. Comrie has instant chemistry with Fisher and Vermette - and I'm willing to bet good $$ that Murray has talked about an extension with him. We've always missed him, we tried to replace him with Stillman - and I found Stillman less effective.

As for Campolli, he's got another year at 600K, that's 600 thousand dollars. That's incredible. So now, we get to take a long hard look at our D this summer - or leading up to the deadline and trade any of the following: Kuba, Picard, Bell (I wouldn't by the way) or even Jason Smith, load up on 2nd and 3rd round picks and use those to move up in the draft if need be.

Plus, with Comrie here, Vermette could become expendable - but more importantly, the waste of space that is Chris Kelly could be moved, 2.1 million opened up - and a bid made on a UFA D-man - or a trade made.

This opens doors for us and allows us to see if Campolli can be a guy that we can count on going forward. Personally, I'm not crazy about SJ's 1st rounder going, but in the long run we need to trust that Murray has plans coming out the ying-yang.
Well said Heater, very well said. This move gives us the instant depth we were lacking, that became apparent when Alfie went down.

Remember the last time COmrie came in for injuries, they went on a tear. Not predicting that will happen, but we'll see.

Murray likes him too. I wouldn't be surprised if Murray is already talking a longer term cheaper contract.

Spezza took his benching very well and Clouston handled it just as well. Sounds pretty apparent he's going nowhere.

One rumour I just heard is Vermette, Neil and Schubert for Cole and Pouliott

Exactly and not too mention he never wanted to leave here. I could see a 3 year deal worth $8.6 million front loaded.

I don't know about you, but if he can resign Comrie, we look quite good for next year.

This is true. Comrie didn't sign a contract until just before training camp. In all liklihood, he was waiting on Murray to offer him a contract. I remember because i was really hoping that Comrie would come back.
