I don't see it happening. When was the last time an offer-sheet was made to a goaltender coming off half of a season?

I don't recall any. At least one that were signed, and therefore had to be matched by the team. Raycroft has been good for the most part, but I doubt anyone risks a couple of picks or more on him.

Avs don't have the cap room though for those guys :pirat:

They will, once Sakic retires. This looks to be the year, I'm afraid.

You've got to be kidding. You don't reward a guy who will have something like 30 NHL games under his belt with 1.5M. He'll get the minimum raise allowed under the CBA for players making less than the average salary.

So about 900K-1M on a 1 or 2 year deal.

There will be no offer sheet for Elliot. You guys are talking like he is the second coming of Patrick Roy. Let the kid prove himself and then pay him what he is worth.

If Elliott plays out the rest of the year as the starter and puts up decent numbers, my guess is he'll get a deal that looks something like Dan Ellis's. I think it's *highly* improbable that Elliott says, "yea, OK, pay me less than the backup -- the guy you brought in to challenge Gerber, but who couldn't."

If he closes out the season strong, I 100% guarantee that he'll get paid more than Auld is making right now.

And yes, Leopold would be one that I could see Murray threatening to grab out of spite (I'm not convinced he'd fit in perfectly, but the Av's can't afford to lose him either, and he wouldn't be totally out of place here.) I had forgotten that he played for Calgary before Colorado, so didn't realize how old he was.

Leopold's 28. Is that 'old'?

Scouting report's pretty good...sounds like the kind of PMD everybody talks about, but at a reasonable price...

"Old" referring to years in the league - he's past the RFA eligibility cut-off.
28 is definitely not old - it's younger than me!

I'm not saying he's worth $1.5 - probably closer to $1.2M since he's going to have to be higher than Auld, and he has to be over $1.03M with his mandatory raise anyhow. However, with the possibility of a shrinking cap, GMs are going to make moves now that are designed to contain costs for the forseeable future. Snagging Elliot instead of a higher priced UFA goalie might be a wise one for some of those teams on the hunt for a goalie.

BTW the Citizen article today on Brian Elliott is worth a read:

The young man is admirable for his dedication. One can only wish him the best of luck. His attitude and professionalism can only be good news for the Senators.

30 games in the NHL. There is no need to pay him more than Auld. Let him prove something before you pay him. Everyone here has to remember, yes guys get paid on potential, but only when you show that potential for a couple of seasons in the NHL.

Also, the mandatory raise is based on actual salary, which for Elliot is currently about 750K, therefore he can be qualified at 825K.

My goodness...for fun we watched the skills competition (boring) and the YoungStars (cool) and when they asked Dany Heatley about Elliot, his face just lit up. He said 'I'm a big fan of Ells, he's exactly what we need in there. Confident and composed.'

And to see his face tells another story. They guys love Elliot. That bodes really well for the future.
