12 medals and not a single one from any of the men. The odds against this must be pretty astronomical.

There are still quite a few events left where the men should medal. De Grasse may not get a medal in the 100 (although he certainly thinks he will) but he very well could medal in the 200. Mark de Jonge in sprint kayak (already has an Olympic medal, world record holder). Van Koeverden is past his prime but you never know. Damian Warner (decathlon) could get on the podium.

Canada was targeting 19 medals and a top-12 finish in total medal count:
http://www.ownthepodium.org/Resources/News/2016/Canada-targets-19-medals-at-the-Rio-Olympic-Games

They are currently 11th with 12 medals, all from the women. I obviously don't have the breakdown over which of the men's events to-date we were expecting to medal in, so it's unfair to think it should have been an even split, but you'd think that 3-5 medals *by now) from the men was not unreasonable.

Canada still stuck on 12. Jennifer Abel (3m springboard diving), who was third heading into the finals ended up in 4th, just 5.5 points back. The Chinese took the gold, silver and diamond (the silver medalist got a proposed to by her boyfriend right after getting her medal).

De Grasse wins bronze in the 100 m; finally a medal for the men. Ran his fastest time ever. Silver goes to the 34-year-old Justin Gatlin. A 34-year-old running 9.89? Sounds a little fishy to me. Oh, and he's been suspended twice for failing a drug test. Maybe de Grasse can still upgrade his bronze to a silver.

Canada beat Italy in men's volleyball. That's a pretty big upset because Italy is ranked 4th and Canada just qualified for the last spot on the last day of a preliminary tournament in June. This gives them 2nd place in pool A (Italy had already clinched the top spot) and a berth in the quarterfinals. They have also beaten #5 ranked USA and Mexico, both in straight sets.

Brazil and France are playing now, and the loser is eliminated (since Italy and Canada have already qualified). Not sure if that had anything to do with how the Italians played (having Brazil eliminated would certainly be good news for them, but what are the chances of #1 losing to #11 in a do-or-die game? And even then, is there really much difference between a #12 and a #11 team?

Ah, I'm overthinking it. It was fun to watch (helps in getting a good workout).

The Brazilian synchro-diving team finished a disappointing 10th and were even laughed at. That's because the 20-year-old in the pair had a "marathon sex session" the night before the event; and she kicked her 17-year-old diving partner out of her room, so neither one had a good night's rest.

Gold for Drouin in the high jump!!!!!  I was watching it earlier on the bike at the gym but couldn't stick around very long (he had cleared 2.33 by that point and had no misses yet).  He cleared 2.38 to win the gold (I guess no-one else did).

Fantastic!

Canada now has 14 medals total, 10th overall in total medal count and 14th if you go by gold (then silver for tie breaker). The women's soccer team lost their QF match against Germany 2-0 so they will now try to get the bronze by beating the host Brazillian squad. De Grasse still has the 200 finals to run (he had the fastest qualifying time).

Any other gold hopefuls?

The over-under for gold medals was 2.5 so we just passed that Smile

Yeah, our high-jumper was amazing. He didn't even miss a jump until after he had the gold medal locked up and he was just chasing records. The dude was focussed.

Looks like our men's volleyball team will be finished this morning. They're getting dismantled by the Ruskies.

On the subject of other medal hopefuls, Brooke Henderson is off to a decent start in women's golf. Here's hoping!

Still bitter about our Men basketball team right now.
Could have easily been the 2nd best team in the world on paper, ended up choking TWICE in qualifications against inferior teams...

I'd care, except I find basketball to be an incredibly Dung sport.

They look inferior on paper. Canada just couldn't hack it, way too young. It's clear from watching the games in these olympics that canada wouldn't have medaled.

That said, I agree, canada choked it away twice. Shows our state, despite the fact we're producing better players now.

De Grasse in the 200 m (semi-finals tonight at 9PM)
Damian Warner decathlon (first 5 events happening today -- he won at the PanAm game and Russians aren't coming so there's a chance)
Brooke Henderson is #3 on the LPGA tour so for sure a chance (she's 4 back after opening round)
Melissa Bishop (800m) with the fastest time today, advances to semis tomorrow at 5PM.
Meaghan Benfeito (already with a bronze in synchro diving) is leading the 10m platform preliminaries (her synchro partner is 14th), just one diver to go (I believe they do more than one dive each though).

A couple of female wrestlers but I don't know where they are ranked.

Men's volleyball and equestrian team jumping both finish 4th.

Warner is currently 2nd, 95 points back of Ashton Eaton (the guy who got flak for cheering on his Canadian wife). He was 1st in the 100m, 3rd in long jump, 23rd in shotput (Eaton was 10th). Two more events to day (high jump and 400 m). Looking good.
