Their strategy, so I've read, is that they expect him to clear and they will use the lack of interest as a knock against him in arbitration.

most of these players sign right after they announce arbitration figures. That's the hold up.

More than a week to go before they go to arbitration, no rush at all.

I thought most of them sign just before they enter the hearing. You want to avoid the inevitable mud-slinging if it all possible, but the closer you get to that deadline the more anxious both parties get. in Hoffman's case it's pretty much a given that if he gets to arbitration he'll be gone after the one year. I don't think Hoffman is at all against leaving (it would most likely mean more money and smaller tax rate). So all the pressure here is on Dorion. I fully expect this one to go right down to the wire.
