There's no way he's gonna make it unless he commits to learning to play away from the puck. He's got nice skills, we all know that, but if he doesn't back check and use his stick to interrupt plays more, he'll be another Corey Locke.

I'm sure he knows that there's a ton more work to do, he needs to go to the same program that Hoffman does - both have a nice skill set, but both can be beaten along the boards with ease.

Neely mentioned Andy MacDonald as a player that Da Costa could round himself into - and that would be amazing, but the organization needs to commit to him and he needs to commit to listening to what his coaches say - and perhaps more importantly what Schwartz and guys like that tell him about his strength and conditioning.

I've caught bits and pieces of France playing this WC and the kid has made some stellar plays, but again - is beaten one on one a lot.

He's already done more in the NHL than Locke has, haha. Da Costa comes from France and a 2nd rate NCAA program, he has a ton to learn but the skill and talent is obvious. He may take 2, 3 seasons to get where he needs to be but he's an NHL player in waiting.

That's what I meant about us committing to him and him committing to us. It'll take time, but it can happen if he works hard with our staff. The skill is there for sure, but he must learn the fine points of the game - especially how to position himself away from the puck and how best to win battles as a smaller player. I hope he has the patience, there's no reason to think he doesn't, but this could take a few years for sure.

Sounds like Ohlund is retiring.

LOS ANGELES. After 13 seasons and 979 matches, NHL career to be over for Mattias Ohlund, 35.
- I went through a covered knee surgery ten days ago here in the U.S. that requires half a year of rehabilitation, but it is uncertain if I can come back and play hockey again in the first place, he says to HockeyExpressen.se.

Sounds like he is.

4 more years at 3.6 million, you'd think he'd want to rehab that knee and cash out.

That is a horrible rehab for a guy that's had knee issues for a while...tough call.

Big mistake firing Mike Haviland. I've never once heard a bad thing about him from any of the guys I know who like the Blackhawks and follow them closely. From what I read the players in Chicago loved him as well.

Oh well...he'll get a job somewhere almost without question - perhaps as a HC.

So... Philly and Bryz... 8 more years on that contract... what are they gonna do? The only reason they made it out of the 1st round (IMO) was because the other goalie (MAF) was worse.

Bryz for Luongo straight up? Heh heh.

Said it was stupid the day it happened and I am saying it now Bryzgalov is an average NHL goaltender. Idiots.

Vokoun is $1.5M on a one-year deal. I'm guessing Philly would like to switch right about now.

Phoenix's style makes goalies look good...not to take anything away from Mike Smith right now, that guys legitimately on fire.

Anyway, yeah, the Bryz contract is a dud, and is a cautionary tale for any GM considering a long term contract for a goalie. When do they ever work out? Luongo? DiPietro?

If you're gonna give someone a long term contract like Bryzgalov, you sure as Dung better know his mentality. Bryz is a strange bird and that's just not gonna work in Philly.

Oh..that and he sucks. Hot damn...10 million dollars of cap hit wasted between him and Pronger....gonna be a long decade in Philly.

Bryznasty has to be the worst signing in a long time. Holmgren made such good moves and pretty much undid it all with Bryzgalov. They are SOL.

I actually think they might be. When Bryz hit free agency I thought he'd be awesome basically anywhere, but I don't have the luxury of being able to have a long sit down with him before I sign him to a 50 million dollar deal. Holmgren clearly didn't do his homework, he saw his numbers in Phoenix and thought 1 + 1 = 2 - and clearly it doesn't. BIG problems - which is very amusing to watch.

Sure, why not throw this out there: Steve Mason for Ilya Bryzgalov.

But anyways, it's hist first season with Philly - he could very well play lights out for the next 7-8 years.

Hard to judge other teams signing goalie to big deals that don't turn out when you are a Sens fan (see: Gerber, Martin).

Philly won't want Mason I don't think, but Columbus could take Bryzgalov and be okay, good call there. They'd have to send a contract back, perhaps The Wiz + Mason for Bryz? Then I assume the Flyers make another move or 2 to acquire a top pairing D + G.

Of course, this isn't a video game (or is it to Holmgren?), so that's likely not gonna happen.

Unless they hire Dave Tippet that won't happen. Bryzgalov is and always will be a very average goaltender. It was stupid then to sign him for 9 years, it's stupid now, and it will continue to be stupid.
