Heh. That was a debacle. I still think HD-DVD was the better technology. But, as it always happens in business, the deeper pockets (ie: Sony and co.) won and not the better technology.

It certainly was. This whole java-based menus are a pain. 1-2 minutes to start watching a movie sometimes. Ever accidentally hit the stop button on the PS3 (they should really change the remote so that a single press does pause)? Kicks you right out and then it takes a while to get back to the Resume option. Remember VCRs? Sweet, almost instant on.

He was one of those line up and/or pre-order and/or drive to the States if you have to guys up until then. Hasn't been that way since.

I did get to experience the mighty Dreamcast thanks to him and I am forever grateful.

I guess you're right. And by "right" I mean dead wrong.

I think the point was that if XBox had the drive built in (like the PS3 did with bluray) then HD-DVD would have had an advantage.

Yes but it wasn't built-in. You didn't have to buy it.

And that was the debacle. Sony tied their fortunes to the new format by selling the PS3 at a loss (bluray drives were quite expensive, to say nothing of the cell processor) and distributing games on the new media. They sold lots of PS3s to people who wanted HD movies (like me). HD-DVD in the opinion of everyone but Sony fanboys was the better alternative, but it lost. If MSoft had included the HD-DVD drive in the XBox the story could have played out differently.

HD-DVD was like Dell compared to Blu-Ray's Apple

If you're the guy that has to have every new thing out there, then yes, you have to buy it.

Funny you mention that, after losing the VCR wars with Beta, Sony made damn sure Blu-Ray was going to win.

Yep. Fun times... Blue vs Red... it got pretty crazy. Fan boys on both sides got pretty silly.

That Crazy Taxi was a pretty fun game.

I ended up getting the Sharp LC70LE650U. Nice TV and a huge improvement over my CRT RPTV.

I wanted the Sony 70R550a, but the store I bought from didn't have it in stock.

Damn. I'm still undecided. I thought brightness might be an issue so I had decided in favor of LED. Even narrowed it down to 2 models (Sony W900 or Samsung F8000) but my room (when we rebuild) probably won't be that bright and I watch TV mostly at night. So now, I'm thinking Plasma might be an option. Question then becomes : what is the best use of that $1700 ~ $2000.
