no thanks. Kris Russell is small. He's really only a PP specialist. If that's that asking price, Howson can keep him. I'd rather grab MA Bergeron for next to nothing.

I think that if Vermette isn't going to be used to acquire Bouwmeester, we ought to hang on to him until the deadline. There will definitely be a market for a guy who has playoff experience, can kill penalties, pot 25 or so, and is a great face off guy. I bet we get a very nice return for him at the deadline.

I do believe TSN also mentioned how he is also 60% on the faceoffs.

Bergeron isn't much bigger and is 7 yrs older. I think Kris Russell could do well here and will put on more muscle over time.

I suspect any deal with Russell would also include a high pick coming to ottawa as well. The other upside is the cap savings to ottawa if its just Russell and a pick. Now I am also open to doing Vermette for Russell, a pick, and Nick Holden. This would add depth on D and still free up cash for us. If a deal like this were to go down then it allows Murray to trade Kuba for a pick and a quality forward.

Kris Russell. Rated an 8.0 D or C on HF, which is higher than any of our prospects including Karlsson and Lee.

Smallish, but a brilliant skater and a good offensive player who competes on defence and had a fantastic junior career.

He's 21. He'd be a nice piece to rebuild with depending on the pick we get back.

I'm for it.

Dont have a prob with it, dont think it makes a huge difference but its a good step towards a rebuild. That being said, we do have Karlsson coming up and Russel is a very similar player, just not as good.

Who knows, if there is a 2nd rounder coming back, or a 1st, why not!?

If it's a first, I am all for it. I certainly wouldn't do both Schubert and Vermette straight up for him though.

The ranking system on HF is weird. Some people put more stock into the number, but I'd say the letter (meaning the probability that's they hit their potential) is just as important if not more so. Players rated D kinda scare me.

Agreed. My point about Bergeron was only to illustrate that Vermette and Schbert are a high price for a guy who's basically a PP specialist. Russell certainly could still develop though.

I think Kuba could fetch a nice return come the beginning of March.

Kris Russell
Prospect Grade: 8.0 B (About Prospect Grades)
Profile Contributed By: HF Staff

History

Kris Russell of the Medicine Hat Tigers is just too talented for NHL teams to ignore. At times this year, the Tigers were short on the blueline when Cam Barker was out with mononucleosis and Steve Marr was sidelined by injury, but the pint-sized Russell was able to shoulder the weight and carried the team offensively.

His 61 points this year were enough to place Russell third in the league for defensive scoring just five points back of the top spot held by Mike Green. Aside from his offensive upside, what Medicine Hat coach Willie Desjardins likes the most about his diminutive blueliner is his fearless ability to battle players much larger than himself. Russell was matched against the opposing top lines for much of the year and had to defend players like Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Ladd, and did so extremely well.

In the WHL playoffs, a head injury suffered against the Red Deer Rebels limited his effectiveness but any who saw Russell during the regular season came away knowing they saw someone special. Russell represented Canada at the U18 Junior World Cup in August of 2004 and at the 2006 WJC.

Talent Analysis

Scout #1: If there’s a little guy that’s ever going to play, he’s the one. The nights he’s playing he can control a game, it goes at whatever speed he wants to play it. I see him blocking shots and coming back and doing a great job of taking on guys in front of the net that are twice his size and he does it along the boards, in the corners and he’ll fight too. If he was 25 pounds heavier you’d be fighting to get him and still I think he’s going to go pretty high.

Scout #2: He’s only 160 pounds but he plays like he’s 200 lbs. He thinks the game, he’s aggressive and he has great hockey sense. It’s tough to guess where he’s going to go in the draft because of his size but if he were 6’0 tall he’d be a definite first rounder. He certainly has the ability to be a good player and from the skill and heart standpoint he has all the attributes to be an NHL player but it’s tough to project where he’s going to fit in at the NHL level.

The article about him at the 2006 WJC compares his feistiness to Theo Fleury's and says he was paired with Cam Barker (who was very highly touted).

HF is not gospel, but considering his age and the contributions of the two players in question, I'd be for it with a pick coming back as well.

I didn't realize that he was B. Like I said, I'd be willing to do it, depending on the return with Russell, but not straight up. Vermette's value, despite his lack of production this season, could be very high come the deadline.

With Nashville's scoring troubles and their depth on defence in the organization, I wonder if we could interest them in Vermette. I'd be targeting Blum or Josi.

Sens Chirp has posted that there is a deal being worked on that would bring Ottawa a top 6 forward, a goalie, and a PMD. They may also be willing to part with picks. Further that the deal is being worked on by someone else in the organization and not Murray....HMMMM wonder whats going on and how factual this is. My guess the players would be a pick, Leclaire, Umberger, and Russell or Tyutin for most likely Spezza, Schubert, and Neil. Just a guess though.

**** no! :x Sad

I also strongly dislike that proposal. Russell is 5-8 at best, Leclaire is an expensive, injury-prone goalie who has not proven himself to be more than a one-year wonder and Umberger just plain sucks.

We cannot make the playoffs. We can afford to lose a maximum of 11 more games this season to get a sniff of 8th place.
