or years, the KHL has been looking to grow and expand in an attempt to compete with the NHL and become a worldwide league. In 2012, former league president Alexander Medvedev mentioned the potential for the league to expand to 64 teams. Medvedev was replaced by Dmitry Chernyshenko in November 2014.
Ya great idea.
Might have our first chinese super hockey trained soldiers come out of china in a couple of decades.
It actually makes perfect sense. They have one team in the far east right now and it's kinda ridiculous how much it has to travel relative to the other teams. This expansion will open up new markets and eventually lead to a three-Conference alignment. You do realize that China is *HUGE*. Wang has been trying to promote hockey in China for decades. Wouldn't be surprised to see him buy a team there.
Now, as for the talent level, well, that will be diluted, at first, for sure. But it's not like they are going to grow to 63 teams overnight, if ever. I could see three Conferences with 16 teams in each. But that will take 5-10 years, minimum.
Quick, what's the national sport in China? It's a pretty ripe field.
